I can’t say I agree with that battery life quote. Battery life in general is device and user dependent so, to OP, I’d take that with a pinch 🤏 of salt.

Well. This thread has me missing my 14 Pro. Lol. Grass is always greener on the other side.
The Apple Silicon laptops changed my usage of my devices significantly. I no longer use an iPad and the usage of my iPhone is a lot less because I can use my laptop on my lap without cooking things. So my go to device is my laptop now.
Has me wanting a smaller phone.
That said. The battery life of the Pro Max is great - when you need it, it is great. But I don’t need it too often. Lol.

I was ambivalent about upgrading to my 14 PM from a 12 mini. Loved the smaller form factor, but the battery life was horrendous and I was beginning to have issues with the phone.
Went to the 14 PM and have no regrets. The larger form factor and weight is adapted easily after a few hours. The battery life is insane. I was one of those people with battery anxiety, but since upgrading, no longer.
SOT is about 7-8 hours for me. Unplug off the charger at about 630 in the morning and at the end of the day I am at about 45% around 5.
I had thought about a 14 Pro, but heard about the battery concerns and jumped into the 14 PM. Glad I did.

I guess those with iPad's and MacBook's probably don't need a Pro Max!
I am leaning towards the PM because of this. I have a feeling I will miss the battery and screen real estate.

Do you have a family member/friend who needs/wants a phone? Make an agreement with them that you'll try the 14 Pro for a month or two - then if you don't like it, they can take it off of your hands (for $ if you can't afford 2 phone payments) - then you can go do the 14 Pro Max.
That's how I've done it. My mother in law has enjoyed a free new phone the last several years, lol. My wallet doesn't enjoy it so much, (but I did trade in her 13 Pro so the payment isn't as high) lol.
Apple have a 14 day return window so you can buy it and try it out!

This is probably the best advice - especially if you want to keep from dropping below $0 in bank account (I speak from experience, lol).
That said, I find for me personally, I usually start hitting my stride with my phone after about a month. I end up having a hiking trip, an all day away from desk event, or something that makes me go - I wish I had my Pro Max instead! Then I go back. Hah.

also wanted to point on last week I had a 14 Max and was not impressed with the battery life, it lasted only until 7pm basically, and the pro until 5pm so that's not a big difference. Yes I am a heavy user...

when I compare my two Iphone pro and Max side by side, it doesn't appear that I can really get "more" text on the max which is what I originally thoughts. so basically my 14 pro get 90% on the same screen as the Max can. So that has be wondering besides better battery why do I want to haul around a huge phone?

FWIW despite hard field usage I have found no need for case or screen protector on the iP13 Pro or iP14 Pro phones, and also have had no battery issues. Obviously YMMV on the battery usage. I simply have MagSafe charging in the car, on my desk and by my bed, so my phone effortlessly gets charged pretty much every time I am not walking around with it in my pocket.

Yea the charge is of course not as good on 14 pro BUT it’s very easy to charge for most and it charges fast!! Far outweighs carrying a 🧱 around IMO
In my case more text (which is not more text really, but is visually larger fonts) will be a big deal since recent eye surgery reduced my vision competence. I will go from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 15 Pro Max in September, even though other than the vision thing I actually prefer the smaller size.
And yes, I have already made font settings larger, etc. The fact is that there is no substitute for screen real estate.

I've used plus sized phones from the 6+.
6+, 8+, 11 Pro max, 13 Pro Max, and 14 Pro Max.
Last 2 iPhone iterations: I got the 13 Pro and 14 Pro. Had them for a month then gave them to a relative. Just missed the extra screen space and battery life. BUT I REALLY like the feeling of the Pros in my hand.
So right now I have the 14 Pro Max, but if I could easily go back to the 14 Pro and give it another try, I probably would. I admit I'm incredibly indecisive about this and it's not getting better.
Battery life comes at the cost of feeling like a brick in my hands. I have carpel tunnel so it really hurts if I hold the phone for too long. But the reduced screen space and battery dropping like crazy when only doing a few photos when hiking changed my mind with the 14 Pro to the 14 Pro Max. But I think knowing I could just hand this off to a relative encouraged my indecisiveness and action.
I do most of my reading on my computer. So I want my phone to be light and mobile. But I REALLY enjoy not having to worry about the battery and having every ounce of screen space when I want it. 😀
It really is a tough decision
If the battery life was better on the 14 Pro, a lot of people would pick the 14 Pro imo
It is just uncomfortable using the 14 Pro Max for long periods, especially if you use a case as well.
The iPhone camera does use battery hard. But it easy to solve by turning off the camera app after taking each batch of pix (just click the right-side button). I capture RAW pix all day long in my work, and have had no iPhone 14 Pro battery issues once I learned to turn off the app as a matter of habit.
The regular 14 is not that heavy for long calls I have one and it is way lighter the the 14 pro🤣

It is much lighter…but i truly realized that it was heavy when went from 14 to 13 mini for my long phone calls.
