Lucky you US customers, they didn’t raise the prices there and they made that up by raising the prices in the rest of the world I guess.
For example iPhone 13 Pro Max 256 GB last year 1.369€ -> iPhone 14 Pro Max 256 GB 1.579€.
Would be cheaper to travel to the U.S., do a little vacation and buy an iPhone there

Yep - this will be the first ever iPhone I’m not getting, they bumped up the price 325 $ in Denmark for all tiers vs iPhone 13 pro. Also they gave us what ???
Car crash sos + satellite stuff that is not working in EU.
Slightly better camera, slightly better screen.

Mehh.
Slightly better battery, better processor, Dynamic Island etc.

From the department of the obvious: recording more pixels (by dimension) equals more disk space! For most it’s a non issue. Besides, I’d always use a binned version anyway to increase SNR and improve color. In any case, the vast majority of people consume their images on basically a 2-4 megapixel display.

Keep in mind the tax differences, warranty differences, currency fluctuations, return period difference, and legal environment are different so prices will reflect those facts. It is not as simple a comparison as it seems on the surface.

Imagine how long it'll take to transfer over those huge files at USB 2.0 speeds...inexcusable for a "pro" device in 2022.

No. Give people who are serious about photography the option to shoot ProRaw format. Simple.

People who are serious about photography should buy a basic 13 and get a mirrorless DSLR. Adding a 48MP camera doesn't make up for the lack of glass in front of the sensor and neither does the horrible image processing. It's no better than an older 12MP DSLR.

Nikon Z50 ......................... iPhone 13 Pro

This was almost pitch black darkness and the objective is ~ 1.5 miles away.

Oh and controversially it's not even worth shooting in RAW unless you are so crap at photography that you have to use those extra bits to dig you out of trouble during post-processing in LR.

What? No one could have predicted that. More megapixels equals more storage , who knew? Seriously if this comes as a surprise to anyone ………

That is a funny comparison. Nearly pitch black darkness. Sorry, but I gotta say it, dah!

when and why would someone be transferring those files over USB 2.0?

The files would live natively on the device, or have been backed up to the cloud through cellular/wifi in the background.

Optimizing storage just offloads them to the cloud, do it and save the money. Yes, you can still "unoptomize", this will just re-download all of the photos to your phone.
I just got the 256.
Only extra $50 over a year bc i upgrade every year.
I might still optimize eventually though.
Any issues with optimizing?

aren't you always shooting things at 1.5 miles away in near pitch darkness? thats why my DSLR lives permanently on my neck!

An extreme example I know but it demonstrates what happens in daylight as well. Oversharpening, slight lens abberations, reflections and the worst of all, some of the most horrible image processing I've ever seen.

It's difficult to do anything serious with it. I do shoot a lot on my 13 Pro but I lose a lot of opportunities and it mutilates a lot of shots.

Ah... So you are a serious photographer. Would love to see some of your photographs!

You'll need sufficient icloud storage to support it. It keeps the (large) original image on the cloud, and a lighter copy on your phone.

I carry a dedicated camera some of the time. I carry a phone all of the time. Sometimes I want to take a higher fidelity photo, but dont have a dedicated camera, its nice to have the option of a better image capture on the existing device.

You're right but there is a point that there are diminishing returns. The larger the number of pixels, the smaller you make the pixels to fit in the device envelope. That means during the capture window, per pixel there is less information being captured result in very coarse discretisation of data which can only be resolved through software afterwards. That means the higher the pixel count the more we are at the mercy of computational photography and the perception that has of what was seen rather than the actual data captured. I would very much rather a 12MP camera with higher dynamic range and slightly larger sensor and slightly better optics in the same package than a 48MP sensor. The target media for most stuff we're doing on phones is online and possibly small to medium sized prints which 12MP is absolutely fine for.

I feel the compromise that has been chosen is wrong.

They really need to give us a Micro SD Card slot for photos or up the 5GB iCloud free limit. Especially for people who do not understand tech like many members of my family who are always at the 5GB limit and do not want to pay. My mum has to buy 500GB iPhones now because of how many photos she has, but she doesn't understand how to transfer them.

Is there an option to easily flatten RAW to jpg once you're done tweaking the photos? My 12 has had a bit of a beating with the proRAW stuff.

the directional choice to lean into computational photography is correct: it has delivered more photographic value to mass audience than anything in the 'pure' photography space, where changes have been incremental.

the improvement with p14pro vs baseline of p13/p14 is already that sensor is much larger.

for a given physical surface area, you can have:
- 1 photosite, where the data value is winner-takes-all at time of capture, or you can have
- 4 photosites, where the final data value can be determined later based on different requirements

the 2nd option is way more useful, even it collects marginally fewer photons. it opens up more potential for optimizing on definition vs contrast vs color , etc.

Euro is worth 15% less than last September. 1369 EUR times 1.15 is 1604 to adjust for todays EURUSD rate. They aren't making more from you, but you do bring up a good point that the weak Euro has raised prices for the continent. You do get to live in Germany, a fantastic country by all I have seen!

"In a brief hands-on video by YouTuber Sara Dietschy following Apple's "Far out" event, a photo taken with the 48MP sensor can be seen in the Photo apps at 80.4MB in size at an 8,064 by 6,048 resolution."

..And then you edit them with a few layers and voila! 1GB/photo.. :)
