Last September, Chinese smartphone maker realme hosted an online competition titled "What's your dream island like?" in which it asked its "loyal fans" to submit ideas for how it could implement what was essentially a copycat version of ‌the iPhone 14 Pro's Dynamic Island‌ on its own devices. So, what version of Apple's innovation did the company settle on?

As reported by Smartprix, realme CEO Madhav Sheth briefly shared an image on Twitter of what he calls the "Mini Capsule," a new feature of the company's upcoming C-series phone that looks similar to Apple's Dynamic Island, just with nowhere near the functionality.

Based on the image, and a video subsequently shared by @OnLeaks, realme's slightly wider Mini Capsule looks as if it is limited to animating in response to battery charging status, and that's about it. If the feature does anything else, realme isn't letting on.

By contrast, Apple's Dynamic Island utilizes the pill-shaped area at the top of the display to showcase relevant contextual app and system information to users. When making an Apple Pay payment, for example, Dynamic Island expands into a square shape to match the Face ID confirmation interface, and when on a phone call, it expands to be larger so you can have phone controls right at your fingertips.

realme isn't the only Android device maker to co-opt Apple's latest iPhone UI feature. Chinese brand LeEco has also launched a new smartphone that's basically a shameless knockoff of the iPhone 14 Pro series, right down to the triple-lens rear camera design and Dynamic Island. There have also been apps in Android's Google Play Store that attempt to replicate the look and behavior of Dynamic Island.

Rumors suggest this year's iPhone 15 models will look similar to the iPhone 14 models, but the pill-and-hole cutout will expand to the entire lineup. That means all iPhone 15 models will have no notch, instead adopting the Dynamic Island introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Copycat as in how Apple did the same for its ECG and SPO2 sensor? Got it...

Android users: Look at this stupid "feature" Apple put into their phones!
-Android company copies that Apple feature-
Android users: Oh wow, so bold and innovative! I can't live without this feature!

Rinse, repeat

Kind of surprised to see so many people not stoked about Dynamic Island. To me it seemed like a gimmick from the moment I saw it, but I have been wrong before. Seems my suspicions were confirmed.

I have still yet to see Dynamic Island actually necessary for something that couldn’t have been handled with Live Activities aka persistent notifications as they call it on Android.

If they had just put it on every model it might have been more useful. It really is Touch Bar all over again. Hopefully they will bring it to all phones next generation but doesn’t seem to be off to a great start.

Yeah it is. That’s why I didn’t understand why the notch just didn’t stay where it was and get some animation around it.

I don’t understand why Apple keeps eating into usable screen space for no reason. The “floating” Dock ever since Big Sur drives me crazy. I don’t want to waste that strip of screen space.

And when the 13 came out and everyone kept calling the notch “smaller” even though it was LARGER in the dimension that matters most, the one that cuts down into the screen. Dynamic Island takes that a step further by bringing it even farther down into the screen to once again give you a useless strip of screen at the top.

It would have been better for the sensors to be flush against the top in one strip that goes all the way across but is very narrow.

It's interesting the term 'copycat' gets thrown around when it's Apple > Android but when it's Apple copying Android features it's "revolutionary!".

Of course. Anything Apple introduces (that has been available for years on Android devices) is always described by them as 'magical'. Heck, when Apple removed the charger, they managed to convince a lot of people that they did it for the environment. But of course, Apple will sell you a MagSafe charger that uses more materials to manufacture, and draws more power. That falls back on the magical thing I guess.

I wish there were phones without a front camera. I never use it and it just takes up space. Face ID is even more problematic. It forces you to show your face to your phone. That hurts the dignity of a person. It is just a machine. How can it force me to show my face?

Meh, it was a gimmick (which I fell for)
Take it. It’s rubbish.

Can’t believe how little apple have done for the island 🏝️ I had expected by now app developers to be on board and more innovative things to come for it.

Wow. What a letdown
