Since iOS 14, iPhones have displayed a green dot on the right side of the notch when the camera is actively being used by an app. On the iPhone 14 Pro models, this privacy indicator is now shown within the new pill-shaped Dynamic Island cutout.

The relocated camera indicator can be seen in Apple's video introducing the iPhone 14 Pro, when the built-in Camera app is opened, and there is also an image of it in Apple's press release for the device. The green dot means either the camera or both the camera and the microphone are being used by an app on the iPhone, according to Apple.

The green dot appearing directly beside the front camera on the iPhone 14 Pro models is similar to the green light that appears next to a MacBook's webcam when active, providing a more consistent experience across the devices.

Similarly, an orange dot will appear within the Dynamic Island when an app is actively using the iPhone's microphone only.

It's worth noting that footage shown during Apple's event suggests that the green and orange dots will appear to the right of the battery icon in the status bar, at least when the Dynamic Island is already in use by other apps, such as for Live Activities.

Exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models, the Dynamic Island replaces the traditional notch found on all iPhone 13 models. Aided by software, the cutout morphs into different shapes and sizes for things such as incoming phone calls, alerts, notifications, Face ID authentication, timers, turn-by-turn navigation, Live Activities, and more.

All four iPhone 14 models will be available to pre-order this Friday, September 9 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and the devices will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores on Friday, September 16, except for the slightly delayed 14 Plus model.

That camera indicator should be a camera icon, instead of a green dot, to make it more obvious it's recording video.
Me thinks it should have been an audible notification but good thing someone at Apple thought for me and made a better choice

The components are jammed pretty tightly into that space. I doubt they had room for more than a tiny LED. An LED large enough to sit behind a camera cutout (or shaped like a camera) would likely be too big to fit.

I get the feeling Apple is trying to shift the negative sentiment behind "the notch" (lowercase) to a positive, glorified "Dynamic Island" by giving it a (capitalized) marketed name.

It's still just a smaller notch, and it still would be better if it were gone altogether.

i think the orange dot appears to the right when the dynamic island is on...when the cutout is in its basic form the orange will be blow green light

Has a hardware limitation - creates a software problem hiding said limitation problem.

So is it a hardware light for better security, like on Macbooks?
I think not, its the display but Apple decided to be always black to make the illusion of being only one punch instead of two. All the "leaked" content in the pass showed that it was two holes.

Notch is a word, a notch. Haptic Touch, 3D Touch, Force Touch, Retina Display, Deep Fusion, Photonic Engine, Liquid Retina, Ceramic Shield, etc... Are marketing names and for whatever reason they always come capitalised. If apple called the notch something like "Curvy Notch" of course it would be capitalised too

I haven't really been keeping up with the newly announced phones, but what use would anyone have for the tiny bit of display space above the Desert Island?
It's about aesthetics. It's not ideal (indeed, "wasted" space), but it looks great compared to any practical alternatives.

A creative way to market more functionality, functionality seamlessness. However, based on the photos, in its standalone form, the island is far more noticeable than the notch — to me, that is.

Is there a cutout for the ear speaker like on the X, or have they placed the speaker somewhere else?

I think I’m the only one who dislikes the “dynamic island” more than the notch. Both are awful, but the pill is worse, IMO. My real issue is the size. The pill is too big, and that little bit of screen above it looks like a mistake. That little bit of screen means that the pill won’t “disappear” as easily as the notch does because it looks like someone poked a big hole in the screen. And pasting notifications and other information along with the pill seems like an amateurish way to try and hide it.

That being said, I’ll have to see what the reviews state about it. Perhaps the implementation will be better than I am imagining it at this point. I’m willing to wait and see.

Is there a reason this isn’t built into iOS 16 for all notch phones? At least those indicators? Is there really that much more room on the “pill”?

I don’t understand the excitement around the “Dynamic Island”, as it’s still a mostly dead area of the screen.

If the pixels could be overlaid over the cameras and sensors, when not in use, I would be impressed.

Over all, you loose more screen real estate than the second gen notch.
