Mute switch is better than mute button. With the switch you always know 100% without looking at the phone when you muted because left is always mute. With button, it will be like with Android, you need to doublecheck if it was mute or unmute... I prefer mute switch over mute button.
And I prefer automating mute status with Focus modes and not every needing to check or doublecheck which state its in, because I already programmed it to be in the correct state for right now. That's what becomes possible with mute becoming a software control, instead of fixed to a stateful hardware switch.

I totally agree. I just have one remark. Actually you can enable/disable the silent mode by software only (without triggering the switch). You need to use AssistiveTouch for that. Apple just doesn't allow us to do it via shortcuts or automations for some reason.

Doesn’t do not disturb already silence the phone?

You need to mute the phone for 20 minutes because situation expects it and you’re like “oh wait, I have to automate my status mode to be silent” xD
Or you programmed action button to start camera instead of mute and you need to unlock the phone and do a few clicks to mute… or you simply forgot and enabled camera instead of a mute ;D
Anyway, we will see how it goes. IMO switch is good. + It’s there since day 1 folks. It’s just classic and unique.

No, it doesn't. It just hides the notifications. When the "do not disturb on" is enabled you can still hear the incoming calls alarm sound, camera shutter sound, screenshot sound, etc.
hmmm, my incoming calls are all silent while my do not disturb schedule kicks in at evenings

1. <facepalm>... but for me it will be used as MUTE button because there will be no mute switch anymore.
2. I would (double)check to make sure what was the result of pressing the button: if it resulted in mute or unmute. With mute switch I don't even have to look at the screen and pull the phone fully from the pocket to check any stupid icons on the screen. That's the thing.
I think the reason that you are getting pushback is that fewer and fewer people ever take their phones out of mute. When you do that rarely or never, the need for the button goes away.

Early iPad versions had a toggle switch and you could configure in Settings whether it should toggle silent mode or rotation lock. But that Settings preference never made it to iPhone even when Apple was doing it on iPad. Probably because orientation lock works differently on iPad versus iPhone — the iPad can do everything in landscape (including the home screen) but iPhone has to go portrait mode (with the notch/island on top or home button on the bottom) in several cases — most notably the home screen.
The iPhone only has portrait lock, not portrait or landscape lock like the iPad. A switch wouldn’t make much sense for iPhone for that reason, but a button would work great!

It used to work so great. Now, multiple times a day, I either accidentally turn on the flashlight, click to open the camera, swipe and open the camera, swipe down and open spotlight search, or tap somewhere on the screen for too long and open the awful wallpaper picker UI. All of it isn’t intentional and happens by just holding the iPhone or when taking it out of my pocket or in.
Me too! but I don't believe i'm causing it

I find that just holding the phone in my left hand with the screen towards my palm can trigger the flashlight. I expect doing it my right hand would open the camea. It doesn’t take long, just grabbing the phone and moving it from one pocket to another is enough.

I don't really use the Action Button on my Apple Watch Ultra. Do you?
I'm going to miss the classic Mute Switch which only had one job to do! Some things are great being left alone. Furthermore, less is more.

Dude you literally get to program it for a one use function. Omg some people are really clueless lmfao

because it is limited to accessibility at this point, and using it break the state of the button. Going 100% software will allow it to come into the fold completely where it belongs.

The toggle on the iPad did not alternate between portrait and landscape rotation lock. It alternated between rotation lock on and rotation lock off — it would just lock in whatever orientation it was in when you activated it. Not sure how having a button instead of a switch would be fundamentally different for iPhone.

So, with accessibility on the left, does this mean we will lose the functionality of the three click action button for accessibility on the lock screen button.

I really hope Apple doesn’t cripple those action buttons just to make this an iPhone 15 exclusive item! 😑
