I think there may be some confusion over the iPhone 15 Pro main sensor. Apple said in the presentation for the 15 Pro “a larger 48mp sensor”, but they also show 2.44 micron pixels which is the same size pixels as the 14 Pro. Every video I have seen repeated “larger sensor,” except the max tech video which said it’s the exact same sensor.

I think this is because the iPhone 15 is using a smaller 48mp sensor (in terms of area) and not the one from the 14 Pro (as rumours suggested) and when apple say of the 15 Pro “larger 48mp sensor” they mean larger than the 15 models sensor.

I was hoping “larger sensor” meant a new Sony IMX903 sensor. But if the pixels are the same size as the 14 Pro sensor (IMX803) I don’t see how it can be.

So has nothing changed on the 15 Pro cameras (compared to the 14 Pro’s) apart from the 15 Pro Max exclusive x5 telephoto lens?

Hardware wise, there is a new nanoscale coating on the wide-angle lens to reduce lens flare. Software wise, on the wide-angle camera, the Photonic engine now uses a 48-megapixel image to enable shooting in 24-, 28- and 35-mm focal lengths.

Incremental improvements at best.

The shooting at 24, 28, 35 is surely just cropping in right? Or if you’re shooting 12mpx then downsampling I guess. Either way, not much of a feature

They did also a second nasty thing! They said, the 48MP HEIF are only availiable on the iPhone 15 Pro. Yes in comparison the the iPhone 15, no if you compare to the iPhone 14 Pro.
No I just activated it on my 14 pro

No they didn’t. Stop spreading misinformation. (This screenshot from 14Pro)

Wow. I could have SWORN in the presentation they just said the Pro uses a larger sensor, but rewatching it, OP is correct they are comparing to the iPhone 15 (which is using a smaller sensor than the 14 Pro).

This feels intentionally misleading...

Definitely misleading as all the tech YouTubers apart from Max Tech have made that mistake and are reporting it having a “larger sensor,” which has always meant larger than the previous model.

Really a lazy update to the camera. Guess they spent all their hardware effort on…titanium and USB-C?

They’re saving it for next year, which is why I’m getting an iPhone 16 Pro. It’ll go from a 1/1.28” sensor to a 1/1.14” sensor, and likely 8k24 recording at minimum.

So the standard 15 has a new smaller 48mp camera compared to the 14 pro? How weird. I wonder how the 15’s photos will turn out compared to the 14 pros? Will they be the same or better or a little worse?

Main difference is lens coating. Think we need to see as people look into the device to still the differences. It’s likely a re-tuned sensor
