I have the 15Pro Max on a window car mount with wireless charging and running google maps. It overheats really quickly, slowing down and holding the charge - not charging. From that point as soon as I get a FaceTime call it would shutdown saying it's been overheated within a couple of minutes.

I have had the same setup for my old iPhone Xs with no issues at all, sure it would run hot but it was fine.

Anyone else experienced something like this?

Maybe a different case, OLED screen, etc. iPhone under a car window will heat up from sun exposure no matter what. Dark colors, large screens (Pro Max) even more so. And then even more so if you are charging wirelessly.

Get a car mount which goes over the vent. AC will push cold air into the back of the phone and all problems get solved.

In winter (if you have winter) you close that vent so warm air is not heating up the phone.

That is pretty insane, which iOS version are you on?
I used Google Maps for about 1h30min drive on Saturday in my car and my 15 Pro Max only got a little warm due to the sun shining on it, I did not have it plugged in to a charger though.

You do realize that sun exposure varies considerably around the world. Also what kind of car and the direction in which they are driving (sun shines directly on the phone or not).

This has nothing (or very little) to do with iOS version...

You got wonder what it might be as using wireless charging plus using Google maps and doing a FaceTime call all at the same time. The wireless charging adds heat, plus google maps fetching data and GPS info plus lets add more heat and use the camera, fetch more data all of which adds even more heat and then stick the poor phone under a windshield with the sun and possibly the car heater on. I think that logic says lose the wireless charging and charge by a charger cable move the phone into a vent mount and maybe you would not have that issue

Yeah maybe I expect too much from it, that’s why I was asking to see what you guys are experiencing.

The phone is in front of the pillar so it will get some sun but not really fully exposed.

I like the idea of an air vent mount unfortunately I drive a jeep wrangler and obviously it hasn’t got proper air vents but some strange round things.

We’ll see how I go…

While my setup is different (I use CarPlay, phone stays in a cubby), my 12PM would routinely show the "charging paused / too hot" notification. I don't think I've seen that notification yet in the car with my 15PM, but that might just be because ambient temperatures aren't has high right now.

I am a FT prof. courier monitoring 4 app platforms plus Google Maps for job and routing needs all day long. When my display would begin to "dim" after driving in the morning, later to get so faint I could hardly see important information as I'm trying to drive I immediately thought it was from radiant sunshine as it sits mounted to my windshield. To test this theory I took a medium piece of aluminum foil and formed a reflective shield (to the sunshine) around/behind the phone in my mount. This trial produced no real change in charging and display performance. After reading a few reports/tricks from others it dawned on me that the combination of open and active apps plus Google Maps was simply working the processor pretty darn hard (creating added heat) while the display was drawing its current demands. The sunshine was a lesser but added contributor. Moving the phone away from the window mount out of the direct sunlight and switching the phone to an idle mode soon restored charging and display brightness. So, mounting the phone clipped to the fins of a cooler, blowing dashboard vent seems to be the simplest and cheapest solution for "us". I may need to get a 2nd separate iPhone or small iPad for my mapping needs as it is critical for my work. Still thinking my situation through. TL

I’ve run into similar issues with a 12 Pro in a rental car with a windshield mount. Phones get hot in that location, it seems, even if not in direct sunlight. In my own cars the phone was either on a vent mount (so actively cooled by the car’s A/C) or in a cubby in the center console (far from ANY sunlight) and I didn’t have any problems.

I haven’t tried my 15 Pro on a windshield mount; my travel mount for rental cars is now a vent clip. Even if sunshine itself isn’t “causing” the heat, it seems the phone can’t dissipate heat in that location. If that’s where it’s gotta be, perhaps some sort of active airflow would help (e.g. a fan).

O.K., yes. Sure sounds like the environment plays a role, too. When I go to grab the phone out of the w/s mount when I'm having trouble the back side of it is very warm- high battery draw and recharging (DUH). Plugged in and left on my pass seat- shaded and in sleep mode it recovers in approx 10+ min. That is NOT usually where I need it when I'm working. May get a A/C vent clip to take the earlier solutions here. Watch This Space...
