This will be nice for airdropping large files between other devices that support WiFi 6e
Airdrop is unreliable for large files and craps out often. My M2 iPad Pro with Wifi6e doesn’t see 6Ghz network if that 6Ghz network is kept standalone or separate. Apple uses some busted illogical algorithm and forces you to merge 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 6Ghz into one Smart Connect network. But newer routers like TP-Link BE800/BE900 don’t have merging 6Ghz band option. So M2 iPad Pros are incompatible for now.

Upgraded connectivity is always nice to have.

It just occurred to me that Apple went out of their way to say "second generation Ultra Wideband chip" to avoid saying U2.
The chip comes with a free album… wait…

It also helped pad out a very shallow presentation.

Certainly avoiding congestion is nice but for me it is the almost 2x speed increase that is the most important.
IIRC the only difference between 6 and 6E is the additional 6gHz band. It’s not faster.

Signal strength and 4x4 radios likely more important than 6gHz.

? Although my Comcast 6E router has a merged SSID my Netgear 6E router has separate SSIDs. I have no problem connecting to the 6E SSID with my M2 iPad Pro. It normally connects with 6E to the Comcast router, though not guaranteed. Sometimes have to connect to another router and reconnect to get 6E.

The delivery rate per 15 feet is a significant jump between WiFi 6 and 6E. The former has a net speed of 1.146 Gbps. The WiFi 6E delivery rate is 1.788 Gbps, a notable percentage hike in speed.

Connecting to the same WiFi router via 6 vs 6E I see anywhere from a 20% to 50% speed improvement.

This is legitimately the most underwhelming product announcement I can remember. I have the upgrade every year plan and I’m not sure I even want to deal with the carrier upgrade cost for a USB C port, an action button, and some modest performance boosts.
That is not the kind of attitude we are looking for here on MR. Embrace the new model and get rid of the stinkin' thinkin'. 😁

I need a 6E router, but I'm somewhat tempted to hold off with WiFi 7 routers starting to come out.

That's what happens when you upgrade every year; meanwhile, I cant wait to upgrade from my XR.
Exactly. I'm in iUP. These incremental updates are not targeting me. They're more for the every three year updater (tho Apple loves taking my yearly contribution). If I were on anything from a 13 Pro or older, the 15v Pro is a pretty solid update. That said, looking forward to a lighter, faster, device. 😜

Wifi 6-E is still quite unpopular here, but this is a good change for future-proofing.

We need a WiFi router from Apple.
Couldn’t afford one if it came from Apple.

Tim Cook: let me introduce you to our most advanced, most capable WiFi router. You can standard connect two devices at once or upgrade to the pro to support 4 simultaneously connections. The standard version starts at only $ 999,95 while the pro version will be sold for $ 1199,95. You only see this at Apple. It’s truly amazing.

(Fine print: standard version supports WiFi 4g, pro version WiFi 6E)

You'll likely have a long wait. The first 6E routers were released around the beginning of 2022. Apple iPhone 6E support is now just coming ~21 months later. WiFi 7 routers started appearing around this August. So a guesstimate of when Apple will support it would be 2025.

I disagree. I think they were right to give up on the AirPorts because network equipment is different than the consumer products they are good at.

At most they might partner with a vendor and sell it as an accessory on their website. Having a recommendation wouldn’t be bad.

I would have liked to see wifi 7 on the Pro, though.
