A solution to a problem no one has. Just leave the mute button FFS!
You could set it to act as the mute button if that's what you feel you need. Personally I would LOVE a programmable hardware button to start a Strava activity or to open the camera. I think plenty would use this.

good as the mute button for me is rather pointless. as an apple watch user it is never on anyway. Least now they can make sure of that button which can re-map to what you want it to do.

Physically, it’s nice to know/see that you’re phone is on silent.

However… if your phone is permanently on silent, then this adds extra capability commonly reserved for accessibility features (i.e. double/triple tap back of iPhone)

So what..a quick button launcher configured to something you want to access immediately. The camera, a Shortcuts trigger etc. the possibilities…

I guess the thing I’m worried about is that it gets as weird to mute your phone as it was on any android I had in the past - where I was never sure if I had only turned sounds off or if the ringer was muted as well.

This would be a nice feature, at least for me, as I don't really use the mute/silent switch ever. And if you prefer to keep it as is, you would have that option.
WRONG. The switch allows you to 'feel' which mode your phone is on, and adjust accordingly. There is also a visual indicator. This dumb "action button" offers neither of those.

I love this multi-function button idea! I myself could use all these functions!

So if I may suggest, Apple:

  • 1 tap - Ring/Silent
  • 2 taps - Do Not Disturb
  • 3 taps - Flashlight
  • 4 taps - Low Power Mode
  • 5 taps - Light/Dark Mode
  • 6 taps - Lock Rotation
  • 7 taps - Show the Home Screen
  • 8 taps - Show the Lock Screen
  • 9 taps - Open Control Center
  • 10 taps - Open Notification Center
  • 11 taps - Open Camera
  • 12 taps - Screenshot
  • 13 taps - Screen Recording
  • 14 taps - Run a Shortcut
  • 15 taps - Toggle on Reachability
  • 16 taps - Show the App Switcher
  • 17 taps - Show the App Library
  • 18 taps - Shazam
  • 19 taps - VoiceOver
  • 20 taps - Magnifier
  • 21 taps - Background Sounds

Thanks for listening to our feedback and a quick implementation of our suggestions!

yeah but current mute is a SWITCH which requires fingernail.
mute (woke) button could be accidentally pressed.

This is why I prefer going to sleep with AirPods vs. Beats Fit Pro (and even vs. Sony) because it's easy to accidentally press with pressure.

Yes, I know cases will surround/cover it, but that's not the point.

97 taps - numb finger.
98 taps - broken button.

They couldn’t keep the mute switch AND add a new button?

No, that extra space is now going to allow for a week long battery, just like the old Nokias.

Yep, Jobs is turning in his grave and Sir Jony is laughing. There is genuine design, then design for the sake of it.

This has now prompted me to look into why Ive left Apple. Some interesting reading.

Thanks for speaking for everyone - not like some of us can't think for ourselves and have to be dictated the function of a device we pay a grand for that currently sucks as it doesn't work consistently across apps and gets flicked on in pockets.

Where this would be a better improvement is being able to map an app to launch and open it to developers - but they won't for 1 reason: Tons of people would map it to Google Assistant to circumvent Siri - which is exactly what I would do. Samsung did this with the Bixby button and literally everyone remapped it to Google Assistant.

Apple, Apple, Timmy...the ghost of Jony Ive roaming the halls....more "giving more by taking away....."

How long might it be until Apple removes the screen so the iPhone can stay in your pocket 100% of the time, and you can instead view your phone on your iPad or MacBook?

What is your logic here?

You can still have the button be a mute button so.... what are they taking away????

Thankfully, not everyone is a product designer.

That would be interesting poll of users how many turn off and mute all the time vs like me occasional muting but mostly on because I like to hear notifications, text, and phone calls. Vibration in my phone holster is not reaching me much. So is is most users, half users or somewhere else in numbers. Maybe I will put a poll up somewhere? Would be interesting just because inquiring and bored minds want to know LOL

iPhones have always had really poor vibration - no holster needed. I never feel it from my phone even if it's between my legs in the car. I had Androids that gave you a cheap thrill the vibe was sooo good. :)

I don't bother with the mute switch much. 1. Even when it's own, save phone calls - other apps are so inconsistent. For instance, ad supported games.... some the ad will be silent, others it will be silent if you flip the switch when the ad starts but when the ad changes screens the volume comes back on.

I also find if you use it a lot, it gets more nimble over time and is easier to toggle on by accident sliding in and out of your pocket.

Because of the inconsistency, I usually turn the volume up and down instead - because of that time I got busted playing a game during a Team's meeting and was off mute :)

The Action Button looks funky and dysfunctional. 😶‍🌫
