Tried many different cables including the cable for Samsung T7 SSD (which supports 10Gbps and shown as 10Gbps when used with the T7), but when connecting iPhone 15 Pro Max to MBP 16 M1, it's shown as 480Mbps. Do we have to get Thunderbolt 4 cables (and specifically, Apple Thunderbolt cables? both of which are very expensive)?

BTW on a Mac you can view the USB connection speed by clicking "About this Mac" > "More info..." > "System Report" (at the end of the page) > USB, and select your device (would show as "iPhone"). If you don't see it, try click File > Refresh Information.

Not sure if this is a question or a statement, but I did not try to restore directly from the SanDisk out of fear that something strange might happen. I wanted to make sure it did it correctly the first time. If I end up switching phones soon (perhaps downgrading to 14 Pro) I'll probably try to restore direct from the drive.

Sorry, bad wording on my part. It was a question. You mentioned the backup was stored on an external, and then asked if the MBP limits speed when two USB devices are connected. So I thought you restored from the external. I honestly don‘t know how it works when you restore and have an external set up as the backup location. Trying to figure that out before I create the symlink.

Does anybody know if there is a similar function in windows to see the connection speed of a USB device? I would be curious to see what it tells me when linked up via this Anker cable.

My apologies for not mentioning this - I’m aware the included cable is limited to only USB 2.0
I purchased the following cable on Amazon and am using this to conduct the device restore - it should be suitable for 10gbps, no? It does say it is for iPhone 15 Pro, and Anker is supposedly a reputable company.

I would appreciate it if people don’t discount my experience as me simply using the wrong cable. I am an informed consumer, I did my homework and purchased the appropriate cable for the iPhone 15 Pro specifically so I could use the 10gbps feature as advertised. It seems to me that this is a legitimate issue.

Anker Thunderbolt 4 Cable 2.3 ft, Supports 8K Display/40Gbps Data Transfer/100W Charging USB C to USB C Cable, for iPhone 15Pro/15ProMax, MacBooks, iPad Pro, Hub, Docking (Intel Thunderbolt Certified) https://a.co/d/7yc3xXd
You should get only Apple certified cable!

Just checked mine. With the Belkin connect USB4 cable I bought it says up to 10gb/sec. Same with the cable that came with the SanDisk extreme pro SSD. When I connect the included apple usbc cable, it says up to 480mbps. This is on my 2020 MPB.

there is def something up, or limitations on either MacBook or the iPhone for getting anywhere close to the speed in typical large file transfer scenarios

I have 2019 macbook USB C, with apples Thunderbolt 4 cable
Mac OS about confirms iPhone (pro max 15) connected on USB 3.1 gen 2 for up to 10gp/s
Yet copying over 2,000 songs (average size around 8mb) via finder and its as slow as 2.0 looking like getting 1000 song written in a hr (maybe even slower , its still going)

Ofc none of these reviewers who get the unit early(at least that I have found) bother do any testing to make sure we can see these advertised speeds. Really don't want to have to doing testing to confirm the real time write speeds...

Using the cable that came with my Samsung SSD, System Report says up to 10 Gbps with my iPhone 15 PM connected to my Mac Studio M1 Ultra. Backups seem faster than they did with my 12 Pro, though it's not an Apples-to-Apples comparison. BTW, I would have expected the Dynamic Island to have shown something when transferring data.

My initial phone backup seemed as slow as usual. But regular transfers were much faster. 600GB of video that would take 2-3 of hours on the 14 took only 45 minutes on the 15.

I restored my 15PM from my MBP M1 Max, and it took about 15 minutes. I had close to 300gb to restore. I didn't use the included USB-C cable though.

I also tried shooting a video Pro Res 4K 60fps video direct to external storage (Sandisk Extreme 2TB) and it worked flawless.
out of curiosity. when recording externally. do you have to tell the phone to record to the SSD or does it automatically recognize a drive and assume you want to record there?

its kinda clunky in this regard. you plug the drive in and it just assumes that you want to use it. it says USB-C at the bottom. As soon as you remove the drive, the recording times update to whatever is available on internal.

Yes, it’s automatic. But I didn’t test if it’s automatic on every setting yet. I know it’s automatic on 4K Pro Res 60 and 30 setting.

Another point to consider is the limiting factor may not be the cable, it could be because the iPhone is writing and indexing those files as it's downloading them from your PC. Similar to installing large games from Steam, you might have a super fast connection to the download server but your PC has to unpack and index the game files appropriately -- here the limiting factor is CPU and SSD.
I suspect this is the case, and transfer speed is not the limiting factor even over lightning.

Backing up my 15pro was slower than restoring it. Took 1hr to back up, vs 20 min to restore 300gb. However I am backing up to an external ssd, and did the restore directly from the MPB, which might be why?

Notes on (fresh/new) backup times:
15pro 300gb - 1hr
13pro 150gb - 1hr
IPad Pro 3rd gen 270gb - 50min

Same problem here, on PC, with a supposed 3.2 cable I bought on Amazon for $15. It seems to be going faster than USB 2, but only about twice as fast. Still much much slower than it should be.

How to back up straight into a ssd? Is it on mac? Thanks

Yes on a Mac. It’s easier than I thought I was expecting. If you google it there are a bunch of sites and vids that say how to do it. Basically entails creating a folder on the external, deleting/moving/renaming the backup folder on the mac and creating a symlink using Terminal.

This is the instructions I ended up following

Windows 11 is seeing my iPhone as USB 3.2 and connecting with 3.2 protocol according to the USB utility someone linked to, but it is definitely not transferring with 3.2 speeds. A 1.5GB file copied/pasted from the iPhone (in Windows File Explorer) to my desktop is taking about 1 min 25 seconds to transfer. Thats around 200mb speed....
I have a USB3 thumb drive that copies the file in just a few seconds.

600GB of video should only take 8 minutes to transfer at full 10Gb speeds...
So you were actually only transferring at about 1/6 of the speed you should be capable of.

I also just tried using the cable that came with my T7. When using that cable I get 10Gb to both the T7 and my aging 2018 iPad Pro. I get 480Mb connected to the iPhone 15 Pro and also my 2021 iPad mini.

Strange how the old iPad is fine but the newer iPad mini and iPhone 15 Pro are not. I guess it's time to go cable shopping.

One thing that just helped improve my speeds:
Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Keep Originals.

Previously had it set to automatic. For some reason, changing to Keep Originals has sped things up a bit. 4GB in 23 seconds, which still isnt 10Gb, but it's still much faster than USB 2.

i'm using a 512Gb iphone 15 Pro Max. Backing up at 40MB/S to my MBA 13 M2. Doesn't feel faster than my iPhone 14 Pro previously.
Not sure if it is due to encryption. Had kept the encryption option checked.
Using a USB4-IF cable.

Status update: 1hr 30min to backup 200GB of data for me.
Windows PC might be able to do faster with USB C port. Anyone has experience with it?
