The Ultra name makes sense for the largest version made with a titanium frame, since that is what they already did with the Apple Watch naming convention. I could see Apple extending the Ultra branding to other devices - MacBook 17 Ultra, iPad Ultra, AirPod Ultra.

iPhone 16 ultra alongside the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Axe the 16 Plus. (They won’t release the Ultra this year and they would be crazy to drop the Pro Max naming ideology) Charge $1400 base price. Has Haptic buttons that were rumored. Sim Free planet wide. (So there is space for the haptics) 7-7.4 inch display. And zero usb port. It’s the safest bet to release all of it in one product but not the rest of the lineup. And because it’s so different almost like the iPhone X was it will drive adoption simply by that alone.

So why should both larger models have the same Max name?

iPhone 15 Max
iPhone 15 Ultra

It differentiates the models better.

But they didn’t though…it was Plus vs. Pro Max.

I think calling the larger regular phone “Max” would be confusing because so far they've used “Max” to refer to the higher tier of "Pro", which it wouldn't be in this case. Leaving out the "Pro" name in the new highest-spec larger phone would probably be okay--they do that with the M-series chips after all.

Does this clarify the lineup or not?

iPhone 15 Mini (just kidding)
iPhone 15
iPhone 15 Plus
iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 15 Ultra

I guess the “Pro” name did pair the two better. Plus also makes little sense as this screen size was supposed to be Max.

Whatever, doesn’t really matter anyway. I’m not the one who has to explain this to the average consumer in store.

Yeah, I don't love it. "iPhone Plus" = "bigger iPhone". "iPhone Pro Max" = "bigger iPhone Pro". "iPhone Ultra" sounds like an entirely different model, like it is with the Apple Watch and the Samsung Galaxy phones. But then with the chips "Ultra" just means "2x Max". Trying to make it all consistent is probably impossible at this point...
