Go to Settings -> Standby -> Display and set it to "Never". Then the Always on Display will work normally again! Even if the error here has nothing to do with the standby feature, it helps and ensures that the display no longer switches off.
It is already on "Never" so....

Silly me. I actually expected it to be on "always", like at night on the bed stand so I could see the clock if I needed to. Nope. LOL.

This must be a new tech marketing thing. The always on display feature description is accurate, except the "always" part. Kind of like Tesla's full self-driving, where the "full" part is not so much. Always and full now mean kinda, sorta.

OP, here. About a month later and watching a movie in the same dark room. The AOD stays on in the dark. Apparently it does eventually learn your behavior/schedule. I’m satisfied. Case closed

But why does it have to learn your behavior? Why doesn't it adhere to what you have stated/clicked on, as in N E V E R?

I was sick over the weekend, and my 16 PM stayed on for about 2 hours with not interaction in my basically pitch-black room. It wasn’t on standby or plugged in, just on my bed or on my nightstand.
