Loads of cases on Amazon already from cheapo brands, for BOTH Pro and non-Pro, most have the extra cutout for this camera button. eg:

...and tons more.

Well if Mark Gurman said it’s only on the Pro then you know it’s true, you can always count on Gurman and his sources at Apple except for the correct date of the iPhone event, after all why would anyone at Apple familiar with the company’s plans know such a thing. /s

What does this mean exactly though? Like the cases will have a thinner concave surface at the bottom or something?

Do we actually expect this button to be capacitive? I honestly don't think that would be ideal UX. Force-sensitive (but non-mechanical) like the iPhone 7/8 home button maybe, but not fully capacitive.

It'll be fun to see what all the case manufacturers do. Some still have cutouts for the action button.

Did they mean “New Cutout” instead of “No Cutout” in the title?
No, I suspect what this means is that the new silicone cases will not need a cutout. There area already plenty of gloves on the market that incorporate something (carbon threads?) on the fingertips, so that they work with phone screens. I can easily imaging Apple making cases where they've molded it in such a way that the area where the capture button is on the phone, the case has a same size/shape area that passes the necessary signals through the case - push on the outside, the push goes through; slide your finger on the outside, the slide goes through. It could be carbon-impregnated silicone, or some sort of metal button molded into the case perhaps. Thy have already had metal buttons fit into leather cases the physically press the button underneath.

I don't think they would have signed off on having a capacitive button without having a plan worked out for Apple's cases. And I suspect the third-party case makers will be playing catch-up on this one.

What’s wrong with portrait photos? I’m just glad square photos seem to be dying on the vine.
If you're capturing a scene that warrants it, they're great. But too often you get pictures that include some desired foreground object, often with the sides crowded or cut off, and miles of useless sky above it, where the pic could have been much better if the photographer was in the habit of turning their phone "sideways" before taking the photo - the capture button may help fix that, by making it feel more natural to hold the phone that way when taking pictures.

To be honest a dedicated landscape capture button on an iPhone is the best thing Apple could ever do, to combat the scourge of Vertical Video ... that they themselves helped create!
I also think the camera app should have a software bezel area with no buttons or display in it, so that you can tightly and securely grip the phone one-handed in landscape using the bezel
and simultaneously take photos/videos, especially if one finger will now be using the new button.

a machine-translated comment on the image by DuanRui claims that "the official protective case of Apple's iPhone 16 series will not have this opening and will be made into an integrated design, which will not affect the normal use of this capacitive button."
What does “integrated” mean in this context? “Filled hole”? Weird, confusing, and probably incorrect word to use there. Let’s get some human translators!

Will be interesting to see how the various case manufacturers account for the new Capture button.

The “capture button” is starting to sound suspiciously like a scheme to sell more Apple-branded iPhone cases.

When it comes to the iPhone 16 lineup, I'm most curious to see if the regular models will also get a 120Hz display. I think not, I think they'll only do so when there will be a new big upgrade to the Pro's display to keep differentiation between the 2 models. I think they will do it next year when the Pro models get less reflective screens or something.
Multiple rumors (also covered here) have pretty much confirmed that there will be no ProMotion display on the "standard" devices this year, and that those will arrive on the iPhone 17 lineup.

Is it just me or not sure if it need some skill to use the capture button, I feel like it's not sensitive sometimes.. maybe it's for avoiding mis-touch, I don't know

I have found it to work quite well. It takes a determined press (actually, I have it set to require a double press to open the camera), and I haven't really tried the "slide to change values" thing. But I was walking around a street fair over the weekend, and I was pleased that I could reliably take the phone out of my pocket, double tap to open the camera, and then hold down the button to record video, all with one hand. This is with one of Apple's new crop of silicone cases.

This feature seems really well executed! I just upgraded from a case which was too slippery, and was grateful to realise how well the capture button could be incorporated. My previous case had a cutout which left the edge of the front glass exposed. Nice one, Apple... 🙏🏻
