I was just told by one of my friends that he tried to order the 16 GB Iphone4S and its sold out online and no longer available. Has this happened to anyone yet?

White, black, or both? From Apple, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint? From where? There are many different stores with their own (separate) inventory.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

It's showing all options 1-2 weeks for me.

it's not SOLD OUT, it's 1-2 weeks shipping

IIRC last night (when preordering) the "Ships: 1-2 weeks" wasn't there. Which would make sense considering shipping in 1 week wouldn't be early enough for a friday delivery (unless they do overnight/same day).

So it looks like it really is sold out at least of the initial allocated units. Of course people can still reserve and queue up for the next batch.

I am surprised the overall iPhone stock could stand for over 12 hours continuous ordering delivering the 14th.

Hell, the 1-2 Weeks timeline just went into effect not long ago.

This means Apple was prepared with many devices in stock and felt confident that during the 7 days, they could deliver an amount large enough to allow pre-orders to exceed a bit the actual stock amounts.

If it wasn't sold out, you would be getting the phone by Friday the 14th.

when something is sold out, it means there are no more.

there are more iphones, you just won't be getting it on the day it's released.

Thats a definition of sold out with backordering. Right now, anyone ordering within that 1-2 weeks is basically backordering an iPhone because Apple is sold out.

O brother.

Fine. For semantics sake. It's out of stock everyone. Out-of-stock.

that's a fair compromise. i would say it's "unavailable for delivery on release day". it's more informative for those looking to place an order.

Are you honestly telling me you have never heard of ordering something that is out of stock?

That's the very definition of a backorder...

Sold out doesn't mean they are going to stop making iPhones, which is what I think 2010RS is basically saying.
