That bar is cool functionality I would use, but will get in the way of my boss doing anything with her camera (in her 50's) and absolutely confuse the crap out of my parents (in their mid 70's).

I enjoy features aimed at me. But my bet is it confuses a LOT of non-geeky people.

You can still use everything in the camera the "old fashioned" way. Having this button hasn't eliminated any of that.

So much hate for this poor button. And so much deception from everyone as with any other iPhone release since the last 4 years.
We’ll probably have to adapt as phones are evolving slowly and now we have to keep them for a longer.
It seems designed to promote replacement of older generations, while somehow discouraging iPhone 15 owners to switch for few new features. iPhone are now in continuous improvement mode.

That’s said this camera control is tempting. As a photography enthusiast (not pro) and a iPhone 12 owner it’s a first time I’m really looking at the Pro model. I never really managed to get the right timing AND the right framing with a touchscreen button. This improved shooting experience alone could make me consider the iPhone as a decent camera for the first time

Why is that? What does adding this button do that you couldn't do easily with the touchscreen. I like the convenience of being able to just click on the button and go straight to the camera app, but that's about it for me.

Apple can't win no matter what they do...
Cash ready here for a new 27" iMac, if they ever bother to re-release it.

So a matter of what Apple wants to do. (A want which lately appears to involve tacking questionable fluff onto the iPhone.)

see there again, damned if they do, damned if they dont.

you've surely read the rumours that the 27" aint coming back BUT a 32" could replace it.

now we can ready ourselves for "it's too expensive", "it's TOO big", "i just wanted 27"... sign.

you can easily have a 27" Mac - buy a laptop or mini and buy your own monitor.
there are some here who actually swear this is less costly and more enviro friendly when you have a screen fail or hard drive and you dont have to replace the whole thing. :)

your idea of "questionable fluff" is not everyones... :)

It’s one more thing to accidentally misuse though, like “what did just happen, why is it recording a video now?!” (or rather, “why is there a big red dot and I don’t I see the familiar apps screen anymore!?!”).

The good news is how you like to use the camera app will not change. Simply ignore the camera button.

For others, such as myself, I see a lot of value in that button as I'll be able to "scroll" through options I'll want to consider/use while framing the photo, and not having to swipe on the screen (which interferes with framing). For me that's much more natural as that's where my index finger will normally be resting on the phone.

But that's just me (and likely many others who are into photography). You can keep on using the camera app as you have been and are used to.

Just ignore the button.

Let's make the entire back and sides touch sensitive!
Now that you mention it, I think this camera button makes a lot more sense than the silly "back tap" function. I don't want my phone doing things because I accidentally tapped the back of it twice, or it's rattling around in a cupholder or whatever and thinks I did.

maybe Tim should have added two action buttons, and a fourway joystick and control buttons....

then those "who needed Fortnite" in the EU would be happy and not worry about missing out on AI ;)

It may sound a too much, but when I used a dedicated camera, I don’t have to think where the control are, I don’t have to look at the camera itself, I don’t have to hoover my thumb at the right place. The camera almost disappear and I can focus on the scene happening in front of me and capture “split second” moments. I also take tons and tons of photos, most of them are trash but there’s often few rare gems amongst them. It’s an active, tactile, almost “hunting” experience.

When I use a smartphone everything feel so static and boring. It’s really “Ok, don’t move and smile, he’s taking a picture”. I take ten time less photos and the results are again very static and look staged.

I’m sure iPhone 16 will still be far from a dedicated camera experience but it’s sounds like a move in the right direction. If smartphone want to continue to conquer the traditional camera, there’s still improvement to make image quality and bokeh, etc… but speed and ergonomics is definitely something that was neglected so far

Another version of touch bar. I doubt who will use it.
I honestly believe this type of capacitive button will replace sleep/wake as well as volume buttons next or the year after year, at least on the Pros and/or Slim or whatever a new special iphone will be called.

Camera control button seems to be useful. Good to see the button in action

We’ll see how it goes. It can be gimmick or absolutely genius feature. It all depends on the adoption. Personally I like it as feels like physical camera.

If this is as easy as it looks to accidentally trigger then cases that cover over it might be a feature.

but it has added a new thing to accidentally press or press wrong! the half press and touch gestures are giving my parents a new way to claim their phone no longer takes photos.

damn you, Apple! I like the feature, but i can see the family tech support calls playing out right now.

i cant imagine those with left-handed parents. The horror…

I love a dedicated camera button. cases will have to expose the button, so I’ll be able to find the spot in a pocket, triggering the camera as I take the phone out. It will be ready to snap instantly. Half the time I see cool wildlife I need every fraction of a second.
