This, and yes I acknowledge it's always a game of demand and offer, though I feel that those phone upgrades are advertised very aggressively. I would contend that it might be bias on my part, but I feel Apple (and alternative competitors) rather want you to upgrade each year than not.

On Topic: If anyone is looking forward to this phone upgrade. I am happy for you!
I'm looking forward to it because I get 5 years of upgrades in one phone. It also feels good to have had 5 years of use out of one device, and I look forward to using the 15 Pro Max (or whatever it may be called) for a further 5 years.

We need a breakthrough in the battery department. :)
We need a breakthrough in the cost department (and software reliability but that's another story)...

The equivalent of the phone I have (XS Max 256GB) costs now 1600 euros, while I paid mine less than a thousand. And they are now talking about increasing the prices AGAIN for the 15 Pro Max.

I have now to downgrade to a non pro phone, but I use extensively the telephoto lens, and don't care a single bit about the ultra-wide.

I'm so frustrated to the point I'm seriously thinking about either buying a used 13 pro max, or just switch to Android however bad it may be.

That's my dream. Over the years we've read about quite a few new technologies able to dramatically increase energy density but there always seems to be downsides that stop them being viable for mass produced consumer devices e.g. number of charging cycles they can handle, shelf life, manufacturing cost, safety issues related to over-charging etc. I do hope that it's only a matter of time until something comes along that can double or triple energy density and also tick all the other boxes necessary for it to become the next thing for consumer electronics (and presumably bigger stuff like cars etc) but right now it feels like waiting for nuclear fusion to become a commercial reality - constantly a possibility somewhere on the horizon but never quite within reach.

At least the rumours say that we might get stacked batteries next year (https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/...structure, enhancing performance and lifespan.). Not the 2x or 3x (or more) step-change in technology that I long to see one day but at least it's something.

I just hope Apple doesn't use the introduction of the technology as an excuse to also reduce the physical battery size to deliver a battery with about the same mAh capacity but thinner than before. With the huge camera bumps on the back of particularly the iPhone Pro models, shaving 1mm off the thickness would make no real difference to the device at all apart from maybe the thinner edges making it more awkward to hold. I really hope that stacked battery technology is used to increase battery capacity next year rather than go all Jony Ive again and start making things thinner and thinner.

What other major manufacturer doesn't release a yearly upgrade? TVs, laptops, computers,..hell even fridges get a yearly update. It doesn't mean that YOU HAVE to buy one.
Sure nobody forces an upgrade, but the smartphone business is still one with yearly iterations, unlike other tech that have a longer shelflife than a year.

iPhone 16 is starting to look like a bigger upgrade. The best iPhone Apple has ever worked on? 🤔
Nope 😅 I would say the 15 Ultra will be the biggest one generation jump. While next year the biggest difference is smaller dynamic island and little bigger display.
While this year will be a whole lot of things including periscope camera for the first time and stacked battery design.

From what It comes out, 15 Pro/Max starts to look like really marginal upgrade. Even the battery is said to be just a tad bigger. Meanwhile 16 Pro - Bigger and brighter display, because new OLED material, WiFi7, LPDDR5X (Very possible), A18 on much better N3E, Stacked battery, New cameras...

iPhone 15 Pro/Max bezel is even said to be 1.71mm and not the 1.55mm. Colors are also very bland compared to 13/14.

Yeah you're right, these companies which put out yearly iterations just incentivise people to upgrade way more often than they should. At the same time though, people should actually consider keeping their current phone rather than upgrading mindlessly. There are problems on both sides, from the companies making the phones and the consumers.
Everyone has a different reason for when and why they choose to upgrade.

As a family of 4, I typically pass my phone down to my fiancé or our kids when I upgrade or when she upgrades.

She currently loves the blue color of her iPhone 13 Pro and will hang onto it for as long as she can.

I'm a sucker for new camera features and will upgrade just for that alone. But it's not always a guarantee that I will pull the trigger every year.

The funny thing is that I'm the type of person who will usually upgrade my iPhone each year BUT hold onto my car until it dies. My brother is the exact opposite. He will hold onto his iPhone until it dies and buys a new car practically every year or two. To each their own, right? 🤷‍♂️

Though I am happy your are thoughtful with your upgrade and commend you for your responsiblity. Yet, I feel that you are more the exception than the rule.
I would suspect that is the norm and the yearly upgraded is the unusual one. I don’t know anyone who upgrades yearly anymore. 2 years at the quickest. Some have phones that are over 5 years old.

This is a tech website. You will hear far more people upgrading more regularly because this is a hobby. They shouldn’t be chastised for a hobby. Also, when they upgrade, it’s not like the phone goes into the trash - usually. It’s worth a lot of money. So… I think you exaggerate this issue.

I’m still doing the 15 pro max 24 months if the 16 is that much better I will do a trade-in halfway if it isn’t I will wait until the 17

As someone who follows screen technology pretty closely, I’d like to know where Mac Rumors got information that MLA reduces side luminance. With the LG G3, the side luminance and side color saturation was greatly improved, not reduced, with MLA.

Considering the insane jump in performance MLA has provided for TVs, I think it’s an important and valuable upgrade for phones.

Edit: I now see that Mac Rumors got this story from Korean website Elec. The site claims a possible reduction in viewing angles. However with no iteration, to my knowledge, of a screen with reduced viewing angles using MLA, this infers its a design choice (by Apple) to reduce the viewing angle. Obviously with MLA you can focus the light however the manufacturer wants, but it’s an important distinction that it’s not the MLA tech limiting the viewing angles. It’s a design decision.

Since when do iPhones only have a shelflife of a year? They get updates for at least 5. There is absolutely 0 reason to upgrade every year, or even every 2 years for that matter. It may sound controversial but the people who upgrade every year clearly have a problem with FOMO which they need to control, an addiction to the the "latest and greatest".

I'm upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year, from an XS Max which I've had for 5 years. The phone was built to last.

Well we obviously can't all be as stellar as you, so why even try? I mean if a decision works for you then it should work for EVERYONE! Speaking of which, I'm really ticked off that Apple still produces phones of different colors! Henry Ford was one of those brilliant people who understood that one only needs black. I mean, black does contain all the color spectrum, so you can just identify your phone as you'd like!

For that matter, why do we even bother with the iPhone? The telegraph has served us well for generations. And those wood poles with the colorful glass insulators along the back roads? SOOOOoooo much prettier than all that plastic crap we have to look at today. Although I'm admittedly conflicted because I'm actually still baffled with Steve's decision to move away from that awesome beige color of the 90's that completely rocked when everyone was so uniform in their workstations.

Alas, I'm sure we'll someday land on that one perfect solution to suit all.

So, reduced viewing angle… more personal security🤔. People may not be able to shoulder surf.

Plus brighter display…

Definitely waiting for the 16.

Disappointed to see no CSAM in this device. Apple is a corp full of pedos

Ah, yes, that's the logical explanation. Everyone at Apple wants to abuse children.

I would rather look at it from the perspective that we need SERIOUSLY harsh consequences for anyone convicted of child sexual abuse and use that as the deterrent rather than creating another system for governments to spy on everyone in ways that we unequivocally KNOW will be abused.

Probably no reason to note that there are a host of powerful, wealthy tech elites who likely appeared on a list of clients of some Epst... never mind. If we just had more surveillance, more people would face consequences.

i have to agreed with you mate, i was 1 of them apple consumers buying an iphone every year because i want to have the latest.....
since iphone XS MAX, i stopped, i start noticing that as a long time apple consumer i wasn't getting the excitement once i had every time apple was going to launch a new iphone.

Yesterday, i was watching this mexican youtuber i follow and i was getting so annoyed to hear him how he was expressing himself that "he needs the apple watch ultra in his life..... i was like.... WTF..... so youre absolutely right, people need to chill the F*** down.

MLA sounds bad. We need more view angle consistency not less.

Nothing is going to make OLEDs compete with bright sunlight, which is the only time these screens aren't bright enough. Never will be.

They've been talking about a price increase in the US, not the EU. I think the EU price of your phone in 2018 was 1249, so less than a grand was a good deal.
