I passed on the 14 because it had, excitedly, an "8k video capable lens!!!!!!" yet no 8k video.

But went ahead and got the 15 when it was obvious they wouldn't be doing it for awhile and to kiss lightning goodbye.

Now I'll wait again until that 8k promise is fulfilled. This every year stuff is for the uber riche.

Bigger screen. Less borders. More battery life.

There are a lot of little things that also add to the impact. The processor I am finding is using Face ID much faster and more accurate than my 13 did.
Good to hear trading 13PM for 16PM also like being able to standardize on USB-C cables, bye lightning.

Did some landscape ones during my hike today. Placement seems perfect to me.
Got the Pro and not the Max though.
I would imagine the Pro is much easier to deal regarding the placement due to the smaller size and weight of the device.

I just picked up my 16 Pro today and my initial tests with the camera are incredible. The detail is significantly better than the 14 Pro I traded in, and the new camera controls are a game-changer in my day to day photos. I’ve not explored much else, but I’m also super happy with the extended battery life. At the end of the change is frivolous and unnecessary but isn’t that why most of us are here?

I can't wait for a redesign, it has just started its fifth year... So tired of it.
It’s far better than the rounded design of the iPhone 6 era. The iPhone 4 was epic for its time but frankly they’ve pretty much reached perfection. I’d make the radii smaller on the corners and try to get the camera lens flush with the case but that’s about it.

Why is the audio so bad? I know that studio mics are better than those mics in phones, but is the iPhone's mic this bad?

*If* it's really that bad, I wouldn't be surprised if it's due to how it's used. And needing more time to understand how it works in different situations, and how to adjust it optimally for the current task at hand.

Apple is missing out in foldable revenue. Not that they need nor do they care about the segment, but I would love to see more risks from Apple. Investors may start to lower their grade based on lack of innovation. Next year Apple should have a foldable, Apple Ring, etc…
Apple won’t even let you run Mac OS on an iPad even though the hardware supports it. Apple won’t give you anything unless there’s a slew of $ behind it and there isn’t in foldables.

My initial impressions of the 16 Pro, which is replacing my ageing iPhone XR:

Firstly, the ordering process was really clumsy - a pointless pre-pre-order phase, Apple charged my credit card for the accessories individually before charging for the phone, which looked like fraud to my bank, who cancelled my card. Then Apple tarnished it's eco-friendly reputation by sending 2 deliveries instead of one - why would I need the case and charger 3 days before the phone?

Well it turns out the answer to that is that the 3 days were useful to send back the 'denim' colour case they sent instead of the black one I ordered.

3 days after that I and I now have a phone and a charger but no case as Apple won't send the right case until they have received and "processed" my return, which isn't the sort of customer service I'd expect at this price point. The packaging is beautifully over-engineered. No plastic, but still surprisingly heavy. The set-up was an odd mix of smoothness and clumsiness. It took four or five goes at 'putting the phone next to your old one' before the process wasn't interrupted by my old phone locking itself, later on I was texted a 6 digit code that had to be used within 30 minutes, but wasn't given any opportunity to enter it until after a 40 minute file copying operation, so it timed out. The file copying seemed to be done over bluetooth, which was daft given that the devices both had wifi and were plugged directly into the same Mac Studio. The progress bar stayed on '1 hour remaining' for ages, then counted down to about 35 minutes in real-time, then finished in about a minute - the same odd behaviour I seem to get with every iOS or OS update.

On to the hardware - overall, a bit disappointing, it really doesn't feel like I've gone from a cheap 2018 phone to the top of the range 2024 phone. The thinner bezel is nicer, as is the camera, but the 'island' feels more intrusive than the old notch, the much more rounded corners of the screen cut a lot more off, the screen has a greenish tinge and worst of all, the camera sticks out so much and is so offset that trying to use the phone on a flat surface means it wobbles. I've had to pad the back with blu-tack so I can use the phone. Why don't Apple get that this is a) really bad design and b) incredibly easy to fix? Also, why the hell can't I turn off the constant 'game mode on' pop-ups when switching apps?

Overall, it's ok, but feels hugely overpriced given the minimal improvements over a 6 year-old device.
That ordering debacle has happened to me twice! It took me hours to sort out with Apple and my bank. They don’t seem to learn from it so I now buy elsewhere.

Nonsense on the lack of innovation. When the industry competition has already brought foldables to market, how would Apple doing the same be considered innovation? It wouldn't be.

Apple is smart to focus their attention on "internal" enhancements. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

iPhones continue to be the bar that the industry reaches for, even when it seems that Apple has fallen behind. They still set the bar for usability and reliability.

The separate deliveries likely had to do with separate warehouses. I agree it would've been nice for one coordinated delivery. Give Apple that feedback.

If you're going from a 2018 phone to the latest, the "minimal improvements" is a false impression, but also intentional on Apple's part. You've been able to upgrade to a vastly more powerful phone without having to learn a new phone. That's their goal, and it seems to be a success in your case.

People do know you can put the camera button on your Home Screen right? It’s literally the same thing in terms of “speed”. I have mine next to the flashlight.

My friend got the iPhone 16 pro max and told me he loves the camera button. I told him “me too” and sent a screen shot of the camera button on my Home Screen 😆

If? Can’t you hear it? It really is that bad.

However, for once I’m going to agree with you, it must be either the settings (default or otherwise) or even maybe a faulty unit.

That’s assuming the audio wasn’t recorded externally, which seems unlikely.

I'm very serious about making photographs and have been using an iPhone for years.

Laugh away. I'd love to see your photos.
Here’s one. Can’t get a shot like that with a camera phone. I have much better but the resolution is too high for MR

Your phone dropped shipped in one shipment with millions of other phones at the same time from the manufacturing plant. All the other stuff came separate because it was already in the US.
I'm not in the US and neither were my phone or accessories.

I feel the sound of the audio is excellent.
Other videos from you, the audio, you get the weird reverb from the room around you and it just doesn't sound very good. It's not specifically just your voice. The feeling of an echo of some sort is just not right.
In this video, that weird reverb sound has been removed and it's just your voice. It sounds very clear.

Those bozos that say they just don't like the sound of the audio, then don't describe why, that's not helpful at all. It's a waste of everybody's time if you don't have a reason. I don't like the color brown! there. ;)
Looks like we just found Apple’s new hire audio engineer. Welcome to MacRumors!
