When there is a strong light in the background, my iPhone 16 Pro Max ultrawide camera shakes, however, when I go to watch the footage, this does not occur, indicating that, I believe, it is a software problem and not a hardware problem.

That is, in the result of the filming, there is no shaking in the image.

Has anyone noticed this?

Hi. I bought an iPhone 16 Pro about a week ago. A few days ago I also noticed the exact same problem with the wide-angle camera. All other cameras work perfectly. I am currently searching the internet for information on how to fix this and found your post. Did you resolve this issue?

No. Even with iOS 18.3.2, the problem still persists.

I couldn't find another user on the internet with the same problem as us.

The funny thing is that this only happens when there is a strong light in the background of the filmed scene. And it is clearly a software problem, because after the image is recorded, this shaking does not occur in the recorded file.

And really, it only happens on the ultrawide camera. It happens in video preview and during the recording of the video itself, but it doesn't happen in the recorded video.

Thank you for your response. My acquaintances and friends don’t have a similar issue. Over the weekend, I plan to back up my phone’s data and reset the settings. If that doesn’t help, I will reflash the phone via DFU mode. This will also update the firmware of the modules, including the cameras. I will let you know if this helps.

I haven't had time to reset my device yet. Keep me posted, you're doing me a huge favor. Since this kind of problem doesn't affect the final footage, I'm not that worried yet, but it's an annoying problem. I believe it is, in fact, a software problem precisely for this reason. Something related to Stabilization Enhancement.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to solve this issue. Even a complete firmware reflash via DFU mode and setting up the phone as new (without restoring any data) didn’t fix the problem... My friends’ phones don’t have this issue. I assume there’s a chance it’s a hardware problem.

This isn't visible in final footage because the electronic stabilization compensates for these shaking (essentially correcting them through software).

Well, I’ve done everything I could. There are two options—take the phone to a service center or just ignore the problem. Personally, I’ll sell it in 7-8 months through trade-in and get an iPhone 17 Pro when it becomes available.

The funniest thing is that it only happens in the VIDEO option. In PHOTOS, as much as it also uses the stabilization system, it doesn't happen.

It gives the impression that you are applying and zooming out of the image. The screen doesn't shake. It seems to keep applying and removing zoom from the image. That's why I say it seems to be something related to Enhanced Stabilization.

It's very strange.

Dmytro, I did a few tests, but by all indications, it seems that our problem has been resolved.

Then I will do more tests calmly. I'm on iOS 18.4.1.

Mostly the optical image stabilisation.

Was action mode used?

Try it out with a tripod or a MagSafe stand and put the iPhone in front of a light source.

The ultrawide camera has no optical stabilization. I believe it was a bug in electronic stabilization.
Got it.

Did you try using action mode or without?

Were you recording spatial video or capturing spatial images (for Apple Vision Pro and VR headset imagery)?

These two capture modes require more light and also you have to stabilise your iPhone significantly when capturing and videotaping.

I use it without the action mode.

But it seems that they fixed this bug in iOS 18.4.1. Then I'll do more tests to be sure.

I really appreciate your help ☺️

I also updated my phone to iOS 18.4.1, but the ultra-wide camera issue remains for me. I even encountered it again today. Perhaps Apple fixed the bug on the iPhone 16 Pro Max in the latest firmware, but not on the Pro version yet... I'll hope that they resolve this issue on the 16 Pro in the next firmware update as well. Glad that your problem is solved😊

I have a feeling the issue might be caused by a problematic camera module revision, where slightly different components were used during factory assembly. This could lead to the camera not functioning properly with the standard firmware. It’s something that happens quite often with Chinese phones. However, almost all iPhone components — including camera modules — are manufactured in China. It’s possible that by the time the issue was discovered, some units had already been shipped to stores and ended up in users’ hands. I could be wrong, but this might explain why none of my friends or most iPhone 16 Pro owners have encountered this issue. So I’ll be waiting for an update and hoping the problem gets fixed for me as well.
