Hello everyone, hoping to pool together a thread for those with iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max camera issues.

At least once a day, my Camera app crashes entirely. When I open the app, I see a black screen where the camera view should be, and within a few seconds, the app closes and returns to the home screen. The only way to temporarily fix this is by restarting the phone. After a restart, the Camera app functions normally, allowing both the front and rear cameras to work. However, the issue reoccurs the next day or so, forcing me to restart the phone again.

I’ve encountered this problem three times so far, and it happens randomly, always requiring a full restart to fix. The issue is limited to the Camera app for me.

I contacted Apple Support, and after running a diagnostic on the device, they confirmed that there were no hardware or software issues. They wanted me to bring in my phone to the Apple Store but I don't believe it's a hardware issue. Their only response was to submit feedback which I did.

I tried to use the camera during a call earlier today and it would only give me a black screen. Tried a few times, had to end the call to get the camera working. Odd.

Same issue I'm having with my 16 Pro Max. Its frustrating. Im regretting getting the phone now.....and not to mention, it freezes at times where the screen is non-responsive.

I have the exact same problem. Can use the camera a few times a day before it freezes, then crashes and won’t re open. The only way to fix it is to do a complete restart of the phone but then comes back after using the camera again for a while. iPhone 16 pro. I haven’t seen that Apple are confirming there’s a bug though? Was waiting to see any acknowledgment and software fix before taking the phone back.

Just here to confirm that I've got the same issues.

Hoping for that upcoming 18.0.1 update …

BTW: Had apple support run a remote system diagnosis. The hardware is okay according to them.

Exact same issue for me too on my 16 pro max. Had the phone since Monday and just had to do my second full reset due to the camera app crashing.

Both times were after I’d gone into the app via the camera button so don’t know if that’s relevant.

I returned my device yesterday for the same reason. The support team found nothing in diagnostics after hard reset and restore. Also said because of the level of stock and the fact that it was still in return period I should just return it and buy a new one. I definitely won't be buying a new one I am just going to keep my 15 pro max. If I upgrade for the camera and the camera doesn't work it isn't worth it. Also the support experience was abysmal. This was extremely frustrating and has left a bad taste in my mouth for apple after having brand loyalty for over a decade. They wouldn’t even reactivate my AppleCare on my trade in device that I had to cancel to send in to them even though I was keeping it because they sold me a lemon and didn’t have stock of the device for a support solution. They wouldn’t even send me proof of them denying me this request. This has class action written all over it. How disappointing.

The AppleCare policy should automatically transfer back to the old phone, if not then this can be resolved with a quick phone call to the AppleCare line. I’ve done it before

As a former employee I can assure you this is not true. When you cancel AppleCare and the device is outside the 60 day window they are physically unable to add it even during escalation to AppleCare senior advisor. I was on the phone with them all day yesterday. I had to insure it through T-Mobile.

Interesting - maybe I saw it from the perspective of doing the iUP but returning the new device? I remember picking up the new phone and transferring data, then finding out the new device had some sort of defect. There was a limbo period where the old device had AC+ fall off and it had started on the new device, but after return it either reverted or I was able to get it manually fixed.

It is also possible this was back in the good old days when apple cared about us as consumers. LOL so like iPhone X and before.

Interestingly after speaking to support and doing the remote diagnostics about this exact issue I’ve been told my phone does have a hardware fault and have been asked to take it in

No idea but
I wonder why we would be told two completely different things!
No idea, it's odd as I'd held off contacting apple on the assumption it was just software but had got too annoyed at it. Got an apt booked in at the next weekend so will be interesting to see what they say.

Good luck! I hope it works out for you there! 🤞🏽 ios18 was working fine with my iPhone 15 pro max so it indicated hardware to me also, but the diagnostics brought back nothing twice.

My issue with the camera is that ProRAW is not working when taking photos with long exposure time in very dark environments. It takes the photo and I can see it for a brief 1 second in the camera roll (lower left corner) and then it is replaced by a grey square. In Photos, the photo does not load although I can see all metadata and exposure settings.

Oddly enough: if I run a screen recording at the same as I am shooting photos they save correctly 100% of the time.

Also HEIC (RAW turned off) always saves the image correctly.

Sigh.

iPhone 16 Pro here. Same problem with camera app crashing and can only get it to work with a phone restart.

Yes to update on my experience, they sent me into the store just to tell me the phone hardware was fine and to do a full wipe and fresh installation. Like you said that’s not something I want to do so I’m hoping out for a software update, it’s a poor show from Apple.

I don't know if this is at all helpful, but this sounds very much like an issue I had with my iPhone 12 Pro Max years ago. I ended up having to get a replacement from Apple.
This might sound crazy, and I don't know if it'll be the same here, but others and I who had the problem noticed a correlation with changing wallpapers and camera crashes.
