🤔 Higher megapixels usually equate to more resolution, not the ability to capture more photons.
Though, with processing I can see more megapixels resulting in an overall cleaner image in less than optimal lighting.
Exactly - on a same-size sensor, higher megapixels typically equates to actually less photosensitive area, i.e. captures less light. Is there some additional information not explicitly stated here?

The companion rumor with 48MP cameras in phones is 8K video capture too. Samsung phones have had it with their 48MP cameras for a few years now (was Galaxy S20 first in 2020? Or maybe there was one earlier than that one?).

8K iPhone video has also been rumored with the 48MP camera rumors for a few years now. Will this be the year for 8K video capture too? Or save 8K for the NEXT iPhone?

And yes, I know, I know, "nobody needs 8K video" blah, blah, blah ("the chart", "99% can't see", "I don't even have 4K yet", "until everything in the iTunes Store is 8K", et all)... but the same can be said for 48MP photos, spatial video, etc. If we have the OPTION to shoot higher resolution, higher res looks as good as lower res displays can show it. Shooting in 8K and rendering for 4K or 1080p is a common approach to making great videos... for those already able to capture in resolutions greater than Apple offers now.

ASAIC: bring on 8K video too! Bring on an 8K AppleTV. Bring on 8K monitors (or Apple being Apple, probably 9.256K monitors priced 3X-5X+ the commodity pricing of 8K monitors ;) ). Etc. I'm quite happy with my 4K TV, but will hook an 8K AppleTV to it and it will render (down) to my current TV's resolution. In the meantime, I'll be accumulating 8K videos for my next TV... much like anyone shooting spatial video now ahead of getting to see it on Vpro. 8K video masters will look great on 4K and HD TVs today... but be bonus (already ready) for the next TV we buy somewhere on down the road. All with no interest whatsoever in 8K- like all the with no interest in spatial video or capturing in ProRes- can choose to not shoot in it (select 4K or 1080p or whatever one likes as their preferred resolution).

Also, my guess is the lenses layout is going to shift to put a bit more separation between the two 48MP lenses... to the average width of human eyes... to improve on spatial video capture. They are too close now to maximize that, so this next phone will probably physically change placement to improve that.

Another thing I wonder: does twin 48MP cameras mean that spatial can step up from 1080p spatial to 4K spatial? Vpro lenses are 4K. Maybe this delivers the max to them?

ok I looked up the iphone camera sensor sizes and the 48MPx sensor is indeed quite larger than the 12MPx sensors, at least in the iphone 14. Assuming they do actually switch to the larger sensor to move to 48, it's likely that this upgrade actually would provide improved light capture.

There’s a limit. More megapixels isn’t always the best solution.

But yeah, the only way to gather more light is to make the lens bigger.
it looks like this move would bring a much larger sensor, resulting in higher light sensitivity. Larger sensor is also likely to correspond with a proportionately larger lens, so that part of your concern seems covered.

I had a Nokia Lumia 1020 (with the optional camera grip) that had a 41 MP camera on it back in 2013. I miss that phone. It was a great phone with a great camera.

You'll have to hop to the alternate universe where Apple finally matched Samsung phones with 8K video (apparently first available in 2020 on their phones). It's been rumored for iPhone for years now, but maybe the 16 will finally deliver it in our universe. If not, maybe the 17... or 18.

Rest assured though: "nobody needs 8K", "99% can't see 8K", "8K is a solution in search of a problem" and/or "8K is a gimmick" until Apple rolls it out... and then it becomes a major fundamental to why everyone should urgently upgrade ASAP. ;)

I hear Apple 4K is like competitor 8K already... just like Apple 8GB RAM is like PC 16GB. Amazing! ;)

This would be an exciting upgrade for me!
I love the idea of the ultrawide, but the quality is not up to snuff..

That's cool but personally I would rather see the telephoto camera get that update. The main camera at 24mm is already rather wide. Thats why there are a ton of 3rd party lenses out there to extend that by 2x. Ultrawide is a very special use kind of a lens. I realize some may use it a lot for action cam type stuff but other professionals would like to use the telephoto camera for portraits with a larger sensor and higher megapixel count. Its neat the main 24mm camera is 48MP but the telephoto camera is 12MP and a very tiny sensor right now.

Also since the aim of ultra wide is to get super wide and not really crop in which defeats the purpose it seems like there just wouldn't be as much benefit to having 48mp vs the telephoto camera where we might want to crop in to get even more reach.

Capture more light by more megapixels? What an utter non-sense! Everyone knows that you need a bigger sensor and a lower f-stop for more light!

And the 48mp would be wasted because of the lens distortion ultra wide lenses usually have.

I would very much prefer the 48mp on the telephoto camera which would increase the reach.

And also I would like to have a setting to disable the digital zoom. Or at least to restrict to double the optical zoom.

Even at APS-C size packing in that many photo sites leads to serious compromises in image quality. So no, that part of my concern is not covered.

Can we please look at some better improvements to the iPhone outside of the camera year after year. Is anyone complaining about photo quality still? How about some friggin innovation for goodness sake!

You look an awful lot like Dr. Van Nostrand

Except that all 8k is not equal. 8k shot with a tiny phone camera won’t loom like 8k shot on a Red or a DJI cinema camera. The sensitivity of the chip is only one of many factors that go into high quality images.

Obviously it doesn't friggin matter to you, so not going to go in the details.

But yes, it is highly important that they continue to make the improvements. There is still room to grow and improve, and people, such as myself, benefit highly because of those yearly updates to the camera system.

If photography is that important, why not buy a dedicated camera? No phone camera is ever going to match the image quality of a dedicated mirrorless or SLR camera.

Calm down bro. People are allowed to have other perspectives.

I wonder if this 48MP ultra wide camera will make its way to a new SE model. i could see them keeping the SE as a single camera phone but use the larger resolution to crop in for a “standard” 1x lens effectively giving the SE two cameras with a single lens.
Doesn't the SE have a wide-angle only lens?

I would love to see Apple release a non-pro version of their iPhone every year that has no cameras and a reduced price. Of course, this should be an alongside the regular versions of their iPhone, for people who want or need a camera.

it may just be me, but I don’t think anyone sells cell phones anymore. You used to be able to buy a cell phone that could take pictures. Now everyone sells cameras that have the ability to communicate.

Why is it always the telephoto that seems to be the last to get the good stuff? I’d much rather the better sensor on that than the ultra wide. Or hey, radical idea… why not both? Oh wait, that means they’ll be nothing to upgrade for the 17, best not do that then.
