Exactly - on a same-size sensor, higher megapixels typically equates to actually less photosensitive area, i.e. captures less light. Is there some additional information not explicitly stated here?🤔 Higher megapixels usually equate to more resolution, not the ability to capture more photons.
Though, with processing I can see more megapixels resulting in an overall cleaner image in less than optimal lighting.
ok I looked up the iphone camera sensor sizes and the 48MPx sensor is indeed quite larger than the 12MPx sensors, at least in the iphone 14. Assuming they do actually switch to the larger sensor to move to 48, it's likely that this upgrade actually would provide improved light capture.Exactly - on a same-size sensor, higher megapixels typically equates to actually less photosensitive area, i.e. captures less light. it looks like this move would bring a much larger sensor, resulting in higher light sensitivity. Larger sensor is also likely to correspond with a proportionately larger lens, so that part of your concern seems covered. There’s a limit. More megapixels isn’t always the best solution.
But yeah, the only way to gather more light is to make the lens bigger.
I had a Nokia Lumia 1020 (with the optional camera grip) that had a 41 MP camera on it back in 2013. I miss that phone. It was a great phone with a great camera. The companion rumor with 48MP cameras in phones is 8K video capture too. Samsung phones have had it with their 48MP cameras for a few years now (was Galaxy S20 first in 2020? Or maybe there was one earlier than that one?).
8K iPhone video has also been rumored with the 48MP camera rumors for a few years now. Will this be the year for 8K video capture too? Or save 8K for the NEXT iPhone?
And yes, I know, I know, "nobody needs 8K video" blah, blah, blah ("the chart", "99% can't see", "I don't even have 4K yet", "until everything in the iTunes Store is 8K", et all)... but the same can be said for 48MP photos, spatial video, etc. If we have the OPTION to shoot higher resolution, higher res looks as good as lower res displays can show it. Shooting in 8K and rendering for 4K or 1080p is a common approach to making great videos... for those already able to capture in resolutions greater than Apple offers now.
ASAIC: bring on 8K video too! Bring on an 8K AppleTV. Bring on 8K monitors (or Apple being Apple, probably 9.256K monitors priced 2X-5X the commodity pricing of 8K monitors). Etc. I'm quite happy with my 4K TV, but will hook an 8K AppleTV to it and it will render (down) to my current TV's resolution. In the meantime, I'll be accumulating 8K videos for my next TV... much like anyone shooting spatial video now ahead of getting to see it on Vpro. 8K video masters will look great on 4K and HD TVs today... but be bonus (already ready) for the next TV we buy somewhere on down the road.
Also, my guess is the lenses layout is going to shift to put a bit more separation between the two 48MP lenses... to the average width of human eyes... to improve on spatial video capture. They are too close now to maximize that, so this next phone will probably physically change placement to improve that.
Another thing I wonder: does twin 48MP cameras mean that spatial can step up from 1080p spatial to 4K spatial? Vpro lenses are 4K. Maybe this delivers the max to them?
Of all cameras, the zoom camera is the one I used most. Next it's the regular main camera. I hardly use the wide angle ever, it's the least important one to have upgraded.just wanna 48Mp Telephoto camera

Can we please look at some better improvements to the iPhone outside of the camera year after year. Is anyone complaining about photo quality still? How about some friggin innovation for goodness sake!

All with no interest whatsoever in 8K- like all the with no interest in spatial video or capturing in ProRes- can choose to not shoot in it (select 4K or 1080p or whatever one likes as their preferred resolution).

Obviously it doesn't friggin matter to you, so not going to go in the details. Can we please look at some better improvements to the iPhone outside of the camera year after year. Is anyone complaining about photo quality still? How about some friggin innovation for goodness sake!

But yes, it is highly important that they continue to make the improvements. There is still room to grow and improve, and people, such as myself, benefit highly because of those yearly updates to the camera system.
Calm down bro. People are allowed to have other perspectives.Obviously it doesn't friggin matter to you, so not going to go in the details.

Doesn't the SE have a wide-angle only lens?I wonder if this 48MP ultra wide camera will make its way to a new SE model. i could see them keeping the SE as a single camera phone but use the larger resolution to crop in for a “standard” 1x lens effectively giving the SE two cameras with a single lens.
Like what?
