Do we need AI to proof read our iMessages?.
I guess a better text editor/corrector for the keyboard was too much to ask. Or a way to wake up to Spotify…. Quality of life features or fancy useless AI gimmicks?. And that’s why Apple I can say Apple cares more about investors than its users.
Unfortunately that's just how business works... Every other major tech company is doing AI, so Apple had no choice but to implement their own AI solution... You have to reasonably know what the fallout would be if AI really takes off as a must have and Apple is far behind all other tech companies.

I imagine anyone who really wants AI on their phone already has ChatGPT/Claude/Perplexity/HuggingFace/etc. installed on their iPhones (and none of those apps require new hardware to work). People who don't really care about AI won't care about the delay.

The investors might be a little upset though. 😝
That is spot on! I just don't know why Apple is so far behind in AI when it is so readily available everywhere else.
Then pushing back AI to next year pushes them even further behind everyone else.

AI is already being exposed as a plagiarism machine that’s bad at math

it’s tanking - and just gobbles up energy/power off grids

totally unnecessary software

just a VC fundie fever dream

it’s a pizza tower of ********
The energy aspect is a good point. Apple likes to brag about how green they are. Including AI in every iPhone will certainly cause a sizable increase to power/energy usage. I assume they just won’t address this aspect.

All I want out of all this is to not be bitterly disappointed about 70% of the time I try to use Siri. If they could cut that down to 10%, just for the things they already claim it does but does very badly, I would be happy.

My main complaint for years has been that Siri can't seem to use the on-device information available to it to do anything smart, again not reliably.

They don't have to chase this marketing fad, they can use the actual technology advancements that really have occurred to just bring Siri up to the baseline they already pretend it has.

This story doesn’t make any sense. The phones will have the hardware necessary for Apple Intelligence. Why would they delay the phone’s release because the software isn’t ready? Gurman should stick to just reporting rumors. He’s no good at analyzing/interpreting things.

If you want something to be a major selling point you can’t just leave it as a promise at launch. Apple is generally pretty good at pushing promised software out but one should never buy a product based on what the hardware could do instead of what it can do (Tesla FSD anyone?). The average consumer doesn’t care to (and shouldn’t need to) know if it’ll be on their phones in 2 months time. They’ll see that’s it’s not available at time of purchase and (rightfully) discount it from their list of reasons to buy.

The SE4 is rumoured to be 6.1". It certainly won't be as small as a mini whatever.
Yes, I was referring to Chuckeee’s comment that the 17 will have an even larger screen, thereby implying that one should buy the 16 to still get the 6.1”, and my point was that there will also be the SE4 for that.

Let’s get past this dud of a 16. iPhone 17 can’t come soon enough.
The iPhone 17 Pro will most likely look like the 16 Pro or close enough. It’s the rumored 17 Slim or Ultra that will finally look different or somewhat different. Of course Tim will probably charge you a $300 premium over the 17 Pro for the privilege of owning an iPhone that can’t be mistaken for an iPhone that was released three years ago.

But of course, can't disappoint the investors despite having nothing to show. It's iPhone 12 all over again.

"nothing to show"

Apple hasn't shown anything yet about their iPhone 16 lineup

Let's be honest here. Apple just simply got caught with their pants down here. Apple is ALWAYS lagging behind others in tech advancements.... but this was not going to be a case of they'll Apple-fy it and be late but better.

There is no "if AI" takes off. It's who gets it right first.... and behind the scenes competitors are already leaps and bounds ahead of what they have in public use and making gains quickly.

Apple had a big pile of nothing in development. They'd barely even gotten started and were over a decade behind if not more. They didn't even have AI photo edits that Android threw out years ago or even a near competent virtual assistant technology (because Siri is just so bad.... and we've learned from former Siri team engineers it was a hopeless situation that really needed them to start over from scratch).

If Apple didn't have an AI showing this year they were going to be in trouble with investors. As it is, 95% of "Apple Intelligence" is not Apple technology but being licensed from their competitors.

The delays I expect to be delayed further... what they have created sounds like it does not work well and they're scrambling. Siri already has a reputation for being the stupidest assistant product. They can't have AI Siri come out the gate also stupid and frustratingly bad.... which it currently is. "Siri, text grandma the pictures from Christmas."
"Sure... texting grandma all pictures with cock rings in you camera roll..."
"Siri, unsend the message to grandma."
"Sure, forwarding the message to all work contacts and posting on your LinkedIN."

By the time Apple AI is available as Apple promised it, it will be just in time to upgrade to the iPhone 17’s for the “best AI experience”!

I've made my peace, but it’s still no buy.
Fair enough. However, there’s always a small chance that a smaller iPhone could be released years from now. Personally I think Apple may be going a little too far on their size increases. The Plus was a bust when it came to sales, but despite that we hear rumors of a new 6.5” iPhone 17 “Slim” or whatever they’ll call it. I like to keep my iPhone in the right pocket of my jeans and I’m a little worried about the 16 Pro’s increase in size. It may not be much, but it could be enough to notice. My 14 Pro is already big enough to be honest. Forget about the 6.5” iPhone 17.

I don’t believe that a foldable would provide a viable “smaller phone” solution either. While perhaps smaller in your pocket, I suspect it would be monstrously large when open and even more difficult to use single-handed unless you have really large hands

I recently put my 4s which was my first iPhone into my front pocket. I could barely feel it.
