Dropping the Ultra Wide is a bold move, camera quality is a huge factor in phone buying today. In a market where even mid range phones boast triple lenses, that trade-off could cost Apple more than a few buyers.
I think most people feel the opposite. The Wide camera is the only good one, and photos have not been noticeably different for several generations. Hence why so many people are interested in jumping on this model without reservation.

So you're saying a 1-2mm difference is worthwhile to you? Because you're not getting phones any slimmer with the massive cameras they're coming with these days. The overall size, or weight, is a different thing but thickness?
A 5mm phone is ridiculously thin and light compared to the literal brick I’m carrying around in the 16 Pro Max.

I’m very much looking forward to it, as long as it has Pro Motion. If Apple doesn’t come through there, it won’t sell

Took courage!

I really only use the main sensor and the ultrawide.

Dropping that would be a terrible idea, the main camera is so zoomed in. Especially on video.

Most Americans dont care and aren't people like us who care enough to be posting on a niche place like this

Remember we had one lens available until 2016 and we were happy with the pics back then. Now they have a 48mp camera with a great sensor with incredible software optimization (save for some issues like zoomed in faces). I've seen some photo comps where in plenty of situations it's not glaringly easy to tell much difference between the pics. With a 48mp camera they can just crop the pics to create a zoom and still have good pics

Then on top of that people aren't ever going to view their pics off their phone ever. Most people I know are fine with the camera in their 5+ year old iPhone. Most Americans it'll be the best camera they've ever owned. If they're going after the younger/female crowd who wants super thin phones, that generation will probably care about the rumored upgraded selfie camera which will be the bet an iPhone has ever had.

Oh Cool! My favourite cassette tape and optical media maker of all time: TDK. Was very sad when they sold the brand off, stopped making media and then Imation (after paying 300 million) years later killed the brand TDK Life on Record. Haven't seen them mentioned anywhere in years. They are really good at what they do and it looks like battery tech is now one of them. Congratulations TDK for getting in the iPhone.

I have tons of their cassette tapes, CD's, DVD's and Blu-rays.

I bet your bottom Dollar the the headlines will soon be 'Apple just misses out on silicon-anode battery tech for iPhone 17 Air - but we expect it to make it's appearance on the new iPhone 18 Air'. Along with two new doggy Emojis and 15 new Pride wallpapers.:p

We should all accelerate our schedules. Imagine what would be possible if we worked longer hours.

I have a 15 Pro and very rarely use that Ultra Wide lens. I think like 95/100 times I just use the default 1x lens and that's that.
This is very true, most of the times I use my camera I just use the regular lense and not the ultra wide. But it is useful to have the ultra wide, even more so than the telescopic. I hardly ever used that on the iPhone X.

But the compromises just to be thin feel a bit crazy. It may feel nicer in the hand and be lighter but I’d prefer better battery life over almost everything. So an even higher capacity battery in a regular phone would beat it being thin.

Although I thought apple makes more rational design decisions after the GOOD choice to introduce the SE models and much more the wonderful plus models (basic features, but even much longer battery life due to less energy consumption plus the same battery size as the pro/max versions)...
this is a step back to the horrible last 10 years of Jony Ive with his obsession for "function follows smaller design"...

For me, the very best choice I mde in athe yeras is thmy iPhone 14 PLUS:
fantastic battery life, two lenses and damn good sensors of the camera, all features that make sense - and at the same time changing battery costs just half the price of the Pro/Max versions because its battery is the first since many years which ist much more easy to do (look at "I fix it".

So - maybe there are customers who want at all price an iPhone that is some gramms lighter and 1mm smaller - but it would be at least fair if apple did continue with the PLUS-versions of their iPhones.
If not, I will stay with my 14 Plus untill God will separate us.... and I think a lot of satisfied owners of the PLUS models will do as well.....

I Think as well that apple not only "could" implement the "battery saving software feature but absolutely "has to" implement this in the ridiculous small (and thus less reliable) iPhone Air.... we will surely hear from bent or even crushed iPhones Air after that thing hits the market....

The law of physics should not be ignored... but apple will do perhaps....
Just as they did already with the "titan" housing which led to overheating and less reliable batteries... apple´s designers should take reguarily take some upfreshing lessons in basical laws of physics ....

if not there will be another statement like "You are just holding it wrong !"

We need more details, but 15% Silicon Carbon Battery is 1st gen Battery that Chinese Phones has been shipping for 24 months. The latest will get ~50% and shipping late this year or early next year.

There were previous Data suggesting iPhone Plus actually hurt iPhone Pro Max sales. So I wouldn't be surprised if iPhone Air is only to move people to Pro Max while testing on production model about super thin iPhone in preparation for Foldable iPhone

Yes, I think as well, this is a typical move of the marketing/saales dpt. to kill a very promissing and beloved alternativ choice of apple´s customer.
If they really do so, they will receive their boomerang. NOBODY who chose the PLUS model will either purchase the (in its price/performance relation surley overpriced "air" NOR their even much more expensive "Pro/Max" versions.
They will stay with their Plus or any other former model.

Apple again follows their traditional line of arrogant and conter-productive greed-loaded marketing s***
If so they merit a hard reaction by their customers.

The now existing global economic problem , inflation and fear will lead to even less sales if they focus on methodes to even lower performance and demand higher prices for less features...

And don´t forget that thereare now more well-performant competitors on the market.

The SE models have been a success and created even more sales.
The PLUS models have been a well-estimated alternative for those customers that want a fair priced and reliable iPhone for standard-demands.

They must be crazy to hit these customers in their face if they stop the PLUS line and try to force people to buy overpriced models in regard of their performance or try to force their customers to buy extremely expensive Pro/Max iPhones with a sack of not-so-needed marketing-gimmicks...

Maybe they will learn again by thir lesson the hard way ....

I wouldn't mind smaller batteries per se but I absolutely hate this stupid trend to make them thin. Who even asked for that? And pretty much every (consumer) electronics business is guilty of that with very few exceptions. Thin beyond a certain point is useless & counter productive, especially when it comes to structural integrity.

A lot of people, including myself, want a thinner iPhone.

The good news, for you, is even though many Apple customers want and will purchase a thin iPhone, Apple will *also* continue to offer thick iPhones.

There's no need to hate that Apple will be offering a thin iPhone for people that want one. Simply purchase a thick iPhone. It's not that complicated.

issue is only one brand has amazing ultra wide quality. maybe if more did then people would use it more

I feel like the new iPhone Air might be scary thin, and. that it might be caught in the wind. I would not bring such a device with me to a Starbucks to enjoy a fresh cuppa.

Just to avoid a small iPhone (= Thinness-exacerbation-Joni-Ive-design) is easy indeed.

BUT... there are a lot of negative aspects to accept iby you just for having a thinner iPhone:

- surely very overpriced

- much less battery life (the marketing dpt. will tell you a lie and deny it...)

- by far not as stable and reliable (will bent or even break much easier - just a law of ohysic science)

- has only one lens

- and will surely not be as able to work perfectly with apple AI software as its more performing iPhones of the same generation...once the AI-Software will really be helpful and nocht just a joke)

- And - if it works with AI-Software, battery life will get catastrophic because of the tiny battery and the high demand of energy to work with AI...

Nice *conjecture*... No worries, the sky isn't falling. My assessment is the 17 Air will likely work great for my needs, and am looking forward to reading credible reviews when it's released.
