This year, Apple is expected to discontinue the iPhone "Plus" device in its iPhone 17 lineup to make way for an iPhone "Air," so-called because of its thin profile.

Below is a compilation of every rumor and leak we have registered from reputable sources thus far about Apple's new entry in its flagship smartphone lineup.

iPhone 17 "Air"?
About the Name
There has been some uncertainty about Apple's strategy for the new slimmer iPhone model and its position in the lineup. YouTuber Jon Prosser was first to suggest that the device could be positioned as an "‌iPhone‌ Air." Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has since come out in agreement about the naming, which Apple could use to boost sales.

Replacing the iPhone "Plus," which, like the "mini" models before it, has not sold well, the ‌iPhone 17‌ Air will represent a new approach in Apple's iPhone lineup, offering a device with a substantially thinner design that sits between the ‌iPhone 17‌ and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro.

Gurman believes that the design of the ‌iPhone 17‌ Air will "just be a step toward something better" since Apple will eventually want to "squeeze the power of a Pro model into this smaller design." However, he does not expect this to occur before 2027 at the earliest.

Device Thickness Rumors
Thinner Than iPhone 6
According to The Information, Apple's all-new iPhone 17 model will have a "significantly thinner" design with an aluminum chassis, rather than a titanium casing like Apple's Pro models.

There have been mixed rumors on just how thin Apple will be able to make it. Rumors have hovered around 6mm, however in a recent report, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that he expects the ‌iPhone‌ to measure in at about 5.5mm at its thinnest point. At 5.5mm, the ‌iPhone 17‌ Air would be the thinnest ‌iPhone‌ to date – thinner than the 6.9mm ‌iPhone‌ 6 that came out in 2014. 5.5mm would be approximately 30% thinner than the iPhone 16, which measures in at 7.8mm thick, and 33% thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro models, which are 8.25mm thick.

The device is said to have only a single speaker, in the earpiece, as there is apparently not enough room for a second speaker on the bottom edge. The Information also claims that the device will feature a narrower Dynamic Island, though this specific claim has since been contested. Internally code-named D23, the device's redesign has been described as a major one equivalent to the iPhone X.

Display Size
Smaller Than Plus Model
The first details about the size of the device's display arrived courtesy of Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu, who said it would be 6.6 inches. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has since corroborated Pu's claim.

However, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, it will feature a 6.55-inch display. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch display. Apple is still said to be testing different designs for the slimmer phone, so the display size could always change between now and the device's launch.

Always-On Display
ProMotion Support
Apple intends to expand ProMotion to the entire lineup in 2025, including the iPhone 17 "Air," allowing all iPhone 17 models to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content when necessary.

Previously, only "Pro" models in Apple's iPhone lineup have supported ProMotion. Notably, ProMotion would also enable the display on the iPhone 17 "Air" to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked.

Camera Redesign
Relocated Lens
The Information claimed that the iPhone 17 Air will have cameras in locations we haven't seen before on an iPhone. According to a May report, the rear cameras could be moved to the "top center" of the device. Some Android phones like Google's Pixel 9 Pro have rear cameras in a top-center position, or in a runway-style horizontal bar, but Apple's iPhone camera system has occupied the top-left corner ever since the 2007 model.

Adding to the intrigue, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that the device will have only one camera, as opposed to two or three.

More Durable Screen
Anti-Reflective Coating
All iPhone 17 models will feature an anti-reflective display that... Click here to read rest of article

Hopefully it doesn't get so thin it disappears.

I've been waiting to use that line somewhere on here for a while and missed my opportunity about a month ago. Enjoy.

An empty iPhone box at "same great price" is far more profitable than the same box with an actual phone in it. Sell the (literal) "air" in an empty box and then sell add-ons so buyers can buy back what used to come in the box. ;)

None ever asked for slimmer phone at the expense of camera quality and battery life.

What the hell is happening in Apple nowadays I wonder..
Actually, uh, I am!! I am using a 13 mini right now and it's less about screen size and more about the weight. I HATE heavy phones. I actually may be convinced to upgrade if it has similar battery life and keeps a similar weight.

For an article posted at the end of January, it contains more than a few ambiguities regarding which year we’re in. Is Tim Hardwick referring to calendar years or iPhone release cycle years?

It starts off by the word “year” referring to the calendar year:
“This year, Apple is expected to discontinue the iPhone "Plus" device in its iPhone 17 lineup” …

But two sections further down, the fun begins:
“According to The Information, Apple's all-new iPhone 17 model next year” …

Then we get back to today:
“Apple intends to expand ProMotion to the entire lineup in 2025, including the iPhone 17” …

Only to finally confuse us again and take a step back in time:
… “and this year's iPhone 16 lineup” …

I'm looking forward to its release!

Do you have *credible* inside information regarding camera quality and battery life?

Apple doesn't care what you ask for or what you want, most of us know this by now.

My biggest concern with the air model is battery life. Thinner device means less space for larger battery. Unless apple found a way to make their chips a lot more energy efficient where you wont even notice the battery life difference.

"Another record quarter" rules all?

"Thinner" saves some pennies on aluminum in case, on less battery, on less camera, etc. Materials and feature SUBTRACTION without MSRP SUBTRACTION is more profitable. Other rumors say it will sub in for Pro at "same great price." Cut costs but sell for "same great price" and that fattens margins. Shareholders rejoice! Customer may gripe but then turn around and buy anyway. "Another record quarter" confirms decision-making genius yet again.

Besides, Apple has a long history of just making things however they want and people rationalize them and "shut up and take my money." Why should this be different? Already- as this rumor keeps gaining strength- I see the usual transition from "no interest whatsoever" to "it's starting to grow on me" and "as long as it can..." qualifiers. That moderation will probably move on to "I have to see one in person" just before launch and then BAM!!! Apple actually launches it and "shut up and take my money." I've seen this same movie dozens of times and it ends the same way almost every time.

Dont forget people the 17 'Air' will have a 120 hz Pro-motion screen, which makes it a viable option for those who usually go for the Pro models because of this feature.

The 17 Air will likely have the same battery life as 17. Where previously the Plus used to get bigger battery. So unless people are used to Plus or Pro Max battery it should be fine.

I am just thinking if it will be all new design where it feels like the old 4th Generation iPod touch with curve around the edges making it "feels" a lot thinner when holding it.

The part I dont understand, is Apple will charge $100 more than 17 for a larger screen iPhone 17 Air with no extra battery life, and one less camera? Had they keep 2 Camera if might have make sense. But one less just feels inferior.

But does it Bend -at what point is it so thin it becomes easily bendable just by sitting on it. I would prefer a titanium frame rather than all aluminum.

What’s really funny is that a lot of people are looking out for the new iPhone 17 x. The 16 has been released only a couple of months. Is the 16 that underwhelming that you have to fantasize how nice the 17 x will be? 😂

The 16 was really just a 15S, but they can't do "S" models anymore because shareholders will get mad and think they arent growing or innovating.
