The 16 was really just a 15S, but they can't do "S" models anymore because shareholders will get mad and think they arent growing or innovating.
If Apple keeps the same pace in future developments, I would be very surprised if they will grow.

They’re getting behind on the key elements for growth and innovation.

I don't think there's anything that says Apple has completely run out of ideas more than the unnecessary "thinner" design choices. The iPhone doesn't need to be thinner. We need to see options like what competitors are making. For example: OnePlus line of phones have a dedicated mute button and ergonomically placed controls, they also have incredibly fast charging that outshines everything Apple does in this area, the ability to charge other devices with your phone like Samsung has, so much more.

Funny how all the rumors and focus are on iPhone 17 Air, with not a peep about iPhone 17 Pro.

People are clamoring for anything exciting from iPhone, since Tim Cook started taking 1 year's worth of features and spreading them out over 3 years.

Uh, yes. It does. The current iPhone feels awful and ridiculous in the hand. It's heavy, and chonk and unbalanced. iPhone desperately needs to be slimmed down so that it can start feeling like something that is supposed to be held. The displays keep getting larger, which isn't translating to any more usefulness, it's just making it harder to hold. The least they can do is make it thinner and lighter. Hence why 100% of the rumor focus is on this model, because it's a change people actually want to see.

They're a massive company now, it's not even comparable to what they were in 2008 when the iphone was a new thing. They are worth more than the GDP of many countries lol. When you're that big, you can't move fast and be agile or wahtever. Everything goes through layers and layers of regulation and red tape and ultimately decided upon by a board of members/shareholders who control the execs.

Their target market isnt end users anymore, its pensions and institutions who own millions of shares and the growth is responsible for billions of 401k's, employee stock accounts, retirement accounts, etc. They're basically a bank that happens to make phones and tablets.

The only way this makes sense is if you're a "little person" with anatomically smaller hands.

Lol, you guys literally whined for years for devices to be thicker and bigger for "more battery life" and more "ports". And now you're complaining?

Childish. You literally don't know what you want, you're just addicted to the dopmaines from arguing online

“You guys?” Do you have any direct quotes from that poster? Did it ever occur to you that many of us were NOT on board with bigger and heavier phones and now Apple is designing a device that appeals to us?

None ever asked for slimmer phone at the expense of camera quality and battery life.

What the hell is happening in Apple nowadays I wonder..

Wrong. I want a slimmer phone, even at the expense of camera quality and battery life. Quite frankly, I don’t understand why camera enthusiasts and those obsessed with maximising battery life at any cost assume that everyone else should have the same priorities. That’s pretty selfish. Maybe some of us don’t care about those things as much but do want a light and thin phone. Especially when the Pro (Max) models already exist for those who prioritise camera and battery life. Why can’t we have our Air?

All I want is a thin iPhone, a decent sized screen, and one excellent rear camera with focal length of around 35mm. I certainly don't need three rear cameras. With respect to using regular cameras (dSLR/mirrorless) I only shoot with a 35mm f/1.4 lens. I know I won't get that aperture on a phone, but that's OK.

I don’t mind sacrificing the camera. Anything they put in that thing in modern times will be enough for me. What I’m not willing to sacrifice is battery. Seems silly to expect maintaining with a “slimmest iPhone ever”, though. More than anything I want a mini with great battery. However they can make that happen. Shame it wasn’t received well enough to stick around.

I’m so excited for this one! Finally something new, I hope it’s back to iPhone 6/7 thickness, that would be incredible. I just hope they don’t use “17” in the name :p

Considering what thinnest ever meant for iPads Pro M4, I simply can't entertain the idea of Apple putting out an iPhone that will come in at a >$799 price but have one or more internal specs or hardware that is less than the $799 iPhone 17.

Just because it's slimmer? People will eat the higher >$799 price and spec and hardware downgrades just because it's amazingly thin?

I can't see it. Not even at less than 5mm. Thin tech just ain't that hot anymore. Or rather, in the era where everyone wants to look at their screens all day, preferably at max brightness, nobody is willingly going to opt for the option that has less battery life than the other options.

iPhone 17 Air has to get specs and hardware that would equal an iPhone 17 Plus. And then in addition to being 1/1 on-par with the $799 mid-tier iPhone 17, it is also extra slim, giving more incentive to get an iPhone 17 Air(aka 17 Plus but slimmer).

Like with iPad Pro M4, iPhone 17 Air's thinness will be a bonus, not a compromise.

One hundred percent agree! People forget that practical tech applications have limits in terms of physical size. It’s impossible to get a super slim pro spec phone with maxxed out battery life, screen size, grunty cameras, efficient heat sinks, robust chassis designs and … repairability. My next phone will be a specced up IP pro max but then again I also like and take advantage of real world practicality in 51mm maxxed out Garmin ti-sapphire watches. Too old to give a stuff what anyone else thinks, etc.

No, not amazingly thin. Just thin enough to quickly get it out of and back into my shirt pocket with one hand.

It's a chore, and frustrating, with my 16MP and silicone case. Especially as a photographer when I want to quickly make a photograph of subject matter I like to shoot. It looks like the 17 Air would be ideal with respect to thickness.

Also... I don't need three rear cameras. One excellent camera whose lens is close to the focal length I like, 35mm, would be ideal for me.

Apple should streamline its naming conventions across its main product lines. Here's what I suggest:

  • Desktop computer: Mac Mini, Mac SE (current iMac), Mac Air (current Mac Studio), Mac Pro.
  • Laptop computer: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro.
  • Tablet: iPad Mini, iPad SE (current iPad), iPad Air, iPad Pro.
  • Phone: iPhone SE, iPhone Air (current iPhone), iPhone Pro.
  • Watch: Watch SE, Watch Air (current Watch Series), Watch Pro (current Watch Ultra).
  • Vision: Vision Air (for the future cheaper, lighter version), Vision Pro.
  • AirPods: AirPods SE (current AirPods), AirPods Air (current AirPods Pro), AirPods Pro (current AirPods Max). I realize this might create confusion at first, though.

I’m unlikely to get it because of the camera situation, but I love it otherwise. Will be very tempting if the camera(s) is(are) really good.

It would be amusing that after all this concern on what this new phone will be named: The iPhone 17 “Air” is just called the iPhone 17 Plus.
That’s what I was thinking. The base iPhone could also have the exact same form factor (with one camera) and a smaller display. I think it would cause great confusion among regular consumers if the base had two cameras and a but a higher model had only one.

Sometimes you just have to wait and see. I had an iPad Air 5 with M1 and was quite happy with it. And I normally keep my iPads about 4-5 years before upgrading. But when they announced the iPad Air 6 with a 13in. option I wanted to see that—a large iPad without the Pro price. It’s been several months now and I really like my iPad Air 13in. with M2.

Now I normally keep my phones for 4-5 years as well and presently I have an iPhone 14 I’m quite happy with. But I am curious to see what this iPhone 17 Air will be like.

This has been rumored for so long Samsung already threw together a super thin phone just to scream "first" like they usually like to do.
