Australian tech enthusiast Sonny Dickson today shared photos of dummy models for all four iPhone 17 models launching later this year.

iPhone-17-Air-Size-Feature.jpg

Dummy models are often based on leaked designs and dimensions, and they allow accessory makers to prepare cases for upcoming iPhone models.

In line with previous rumors, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max each have an elongated rear camera bump, housing three camera lenses, an LED camera flash, and a microphone. The so-called iPhone 17 Air has a similar rear camera bump, but with only a single lens. Last, the regular iPhone 17 has the same design as the iPhone 16.

These designs are starting to look like the real deal, based on several reports, mockups, leaked CADs, and dummy models over the past few months.

Notably, these dummy models reveal a few potential features for the iPhone 17 Air that we had yet to hear about, including MagSafe and the Action button. There were some concerns that the iPhone 17 Air might lack MagSafe due to its ultra-thin design, but it appears the device will offer the feature after all, if these dummy models are accurate.

The inclusion of an Action button instead of a Ring/Silent switch is not much of a surprise, but it is still good to see the first evidence of this change.

A report earlier today said the iPhone 17 Air will also have a Camera Control button, and the dummy model reflects that.

A side-by-side view of the dummy models reveals that the iPhone 17 Air will look noticeably thinner than the other three iPhone 17 models.

As usual, Apple should announce its new iPhone lineup in September.

I could see myself getting the Air. The only reason I got a Pro model is because of ProMotion. I don't use the cameras enough to warrant the higher price and I really dislike the weight of the Pro models. I have the 15 Pro which is ok but the 16 Pro went back to being fat.

I tend to agree. ProMotion is biggest reason I go for pro model iPhone, though I do like the cameras as well. Was quite happy with the 15 Pro with the move to titanium how the weight dropped. Curious to see these metrics on the 17 Air, especially with them all going back to aluminum and also being much thinner.

The even more pronounced bump on the Air kills it for me. I am holding off on final judgement because this is Macrumors, and we know how it works. Complain about said device, then proceed to checkout with said device, and whine that said device is backordered and you have to wait.

I actually like the Air design and can’t wait to see it finalized

But seriously I am excited for it. I have a 15 Pro, and I’m strongly considering going for the Air since I really use MagSafe/Wireless charging for my iPhone since 2020, so I won’t miss the ports that much, and if it has the same camera system as the iPhone 16 series I’ll definitely be wanting that since the 16/16 Plus have great cameras.

I find the rear camera design odd, except it would eliminate any wobbling.
I am going to patientally wait for the September announcement to decide what to do, 13PM going strong.

I chose the iPhone 15 Pro because it was noticeably thinner and lighter than my 13 Pro. Now, I don’t want to downgrade to the thicker, heavier 17 Pro. The Air, on the other hand, is too big and has only one camera, while my Pro has three, so it’s not an option for me either.

The max(/ultra?) Is getting to be so large and heavy, 15 pro max is my first “big” phone and I love the screen but any heavier and I think it’s a deal breaker, the 16 pro max is too much already. I refuse to give up my telephoto lens, and I don’t want to have to go back down to a smaller screen to keep it as well as a manageable weight. I might just keep my 15 pro max, it’s a perfect middle section of it all.

If they put a telephoto in the 18 air, then we’ll talk

Not necessarily, since the camera lens sticks out further than the rest of the mesa. Honestly it looks like the worst of all worlds to me, but I assume we'll get used to it.

The actual lenses on the Pro models don't look any bigger than on the current generation. The camera bump extension is probably to make more room for the eventual under-display Face ID/Front Camera system on future models. It would've been too obvious if they extended the camera bump and made the Face ID under screen at the same time so I guess they think they're being stealthy by staggering it out 🤣

Excellent news.

I'll likely purchase one once it's in the local Apple Store and I can first check it out.
This phone is nothing special, if the camera bump was hidden, then this phone would be a lot better. And I had no faith that the battery life’s gonna be any good with a phone being this thin.

I expect it'll have a 2X telephoto through a crop of the primary lens, like the current iPhone 16 base/Plus.

Nope. It is potentially special for me, as I've mentioned in previous posts. Looking forward to checking it out.

I’ll have to see how everything shapes out tbh. My 15 Pro Max remains faultless and I can’t realistically justify the new expense because what…it’s thinner. I hated the weight of the prior pro models too so I’m curious to see if that camera makes it top heavy in one handed use.

I have a 14 Pro 1 TB model, which I upgraded from an 11 Pro. I usually go 2 or 3 cycles betwen upgrades, but after seeing the design for the 17 Pro, I think I'm going to get a 16 Pro instead. These full-width camera bumps look far too obnoxious, and the top parts of any case you put on one will be considerably weaker.

Jony Ive has to be facepalming right about now.

Interesting to see the dummy models. Looks like the design is confirmed and locked in. Waiting to hear about the colours this year.
