apple cellular performance is already pretty poor compared to android phones and this is with Qualcomm modems ... so I don't see this turning out better
I don’t have any cellular issues with my iPhone 13, and if the problem happens, it is very likely that is has to do with the career but not my iPhone

I think you’ve chosen the wrong career

Not sure why everyone is moaning about Apple's performance.

I was shifting 300 megabits over 5G quite happily on my 15 Pro half a mile offshore on a moving boat off the coast of Malta last year.

Do you need more?!?!?

It is wild how many articles are referring to the new C1 modem saving battery life when the battery information that Apple posts are based off of the phone being on WiFi. It is certainly possible it the C1 is more efficient than the current phones but you can't get that information based off what Apple has posted about the phone so far.

I'm skeptical as well. The most cited battery figure is the 26 hour Video playback and 21 hours Video playback (streamed)

"Testing conducted by Apple in December 2024 and January 2025 using preproduction iPhone 16e units and software, subscribed to LTE and 5G carrier networks. Video playback consisted of a repeated 2-hour 23-minute HDR movie purchased from the iTunes Store, tested with stereo audio output. Video playback (streamed) consisted of a repeated 3-hour 1-minute HDR movie purchased from the iTunes Store, tested with stereo audio output. All settings were default except: Bluetooth was paired with headphones; Wi-Fi was associated with a network; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks, Auto-Brightness, and True Tone were turned off."

It's curious that the C1 seems to be such a big deal, but is getting a relatively minor mention, almost as if Apple's not quite confident in it yet.

Qualcomm has such a strong grip on the modem market, has Apple actually eclipsed them in modem performance on Day One? Or only in power efficiency?

We need more info on this C1...

rather than improving the battery capacity and technology just removing features which were introduced in 4-5 years old phones and increase the price, i love this company

There are so many factors involved, you can't really pit "iPhone against Android" like that.

In general, yes, it has been shown that some higher-end Android phones can have greater bandwidth in ideal network conditions. But does that make iPhone "slow" or just "slower" in comparison?

During Apple's attempt at using Intel modems, it was also shown that they were slower on some carrier networks, but not all, and not in all network conditions.

Time will tell if the 1000+ engineering team that Apple had assigned to their modem project has actually produced a real winner. It's too early to make that call yet.

Why is this so surprising?

It's NOT the C1, it's the fact that the phone is completely gimped of a whole host of hardware that pulls battery power. Magsafe, lens, additional button, pro motion, always on..need I go on 🤦‍♂️

The new iPhone 16e has the longest battery life of any 6.1-inch iPhone. According to Apple's tech specs, the iPhone 16e offers up to 26 hours of battery life for video playback, compared to up to 22 hours for the standard iPhone 16.

A key reason the iPhone 16e has longer battery life than the iPhone 16 is Apple's new C1 modem, which is the most power-efficient modem ever included in an iPhone. All other current iPhone models are equipped with Qualcomm modems.

Here is how Apple described the C1 modem:Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today said the iPhone 17 Air will be equipped with the C1 modem, which should contribute to the device having longer battery life.

It is not only the C1 modem that will boost battery life. With a large 6.6-inch or 6.7-inch display, there should be plenty of room inside the iPhone 17 Air for a larger battery, even with the device expected to have an ultra-thin design. So, despite being thin and light, the iPhone 17 Air's battery life might be more impressive than some may have anticipated.

That's the Apple spin, the truth is they've built a bigger battery for the 16e because they got rid of the MagSafe magnets

Do we know how big the battery is? My understanding was that the C1 is smaller so there’s room for a slightly bigger battery, so it’s indirectly responsible for the longer battery life.

Not expecting the C1 to be present in all the 17 models. The 17 Air/Slim should get it. With its smaller battery due to the thinness, the C1 should help to get similar battery life as that of the base 17 models at least.

True, removing Magsafe, the second lens, maybe even a button, all as part of the redesign to make more room for a bigger battery to make up for the battery being thinner, may come at the cost of some sales for the 16e. Not to mention no ProMotion, always-on, etc., as you mention.

I am glad sanity is still a thing on Macrumors. But dont worry we will tear them apart when results are available.
