“Oddly, Samsung's latest Galaxy S25 Ultra uses an improved version of the older M13 panel, so it looks like the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air could well have an objectively better display in at least some respects.”

Relax bud, it was just a word joke. Have wonderful day! 🌞

All iPhone 17 models in Apple's upcoming flagship iPhone 17 series will use Samsung's high performance "M14" OLED display panel, according to the Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital.

Samsung's "M" series of OLED panels are made for flagship smartphones, while "14" refers to the number of high-performance materials used to produce them. The "M14" panel was used in last year's Apple's iPhone 16 Pro models, and delivers a 30% increase in brightness along with improved longevity compared to the previous M13 panel, thanks to improvements in the efficiency of the blue-emitting layer.

Oddly, Samsung's latest Galaxy S25 Ultra uses an improved version of the older M13 panel, so it looks like the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air could well have an objectively better display in at least some respects.

Apple's use of the M14 panel for all models makes sense, as Apple intends to expand ProMotion to all iPhone 17 models to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content when necessary. Previously, only "Pro" models in Apple's iPhone lineup have had the feature.

Notably, ProMotion would also enable the display on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked.
Last year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max got bigger display sizes, going from 6.12- and 6.69-inches to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For 2025, Apple is also expected to bring the larger 6.27-inch display size to its standard ‌iPhone‌ model, while the iPhone 17 Air – replacing the Plus model – is rumored to have a 6.6-inch display, which means it will be larger than the iPhone 17 but smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Can anyone know the rumored pricing of iPhone 17? Is it the same as predecessor?

I'm already tempted by the Air but if it has 6.6" 120hz/AoD then It will be difficult to get a 6.3" pro over that.

I don't care about the extra lens BTW.

So what’s going to be the differentiator for the Pro series at this point besides having an extra situational camera (telescope) and some silly useless gimmicks like camera control button?
Speed. Expect more cores on the GPU, a higher clock speed on the performance cores, and more RAM. (There was a separate rumor that the Pros would get 12 GB RAM in the 17-series)

Dangggg this is gonna be a hard decision to leave my mini 😟 satellite messaging. Plus high refresh. Hmmm I wonder what the battery life will be.

Using a well-proven panel manufacturing system across more devices minimizes risk and greatly increases economies of scale. And it is likely far less expensive than developing a new display of equal caliber.

Regular 17 and 17Air will get A19 and Pro's will get A19Pro soc. Possibly Qualcomm modem in Pro's and lower lines will get in-house Apple modem. I wouldn't rule out software locked features exclusive to the Pro's. Apple will figure out a way to keep Pro models selling even if it's by gimping features on non-pro models
Also the Titanium frames on the Pro models. Many people want the Titanium frame for the bling factor.

My 13PM is due for an upgrade. Probably switching to Samsung's next foldable as there is ZERO significant change from the 13 to 17.

Thought there was a rumor that all models will be aluminum including Pro's? Honestly, there has been so many rumors/speculation I can't keep up with all of them. Seems to change every couple of days

No, I mean that 17 Pro and Max would have brighter displays
No, that has not been rumored. But I'm pretty sure it is happening. The competition has brighter displays at this point.

I think both Pro models this year will have brighter and anti-reflective displays like the Ultra series.

My parter is still on 11 and said the same thing. I'm in a more difficult situation as I am on 13 mini and I hate anything bigger than that size. I know I will probably have to eventually bite the bullet and upgrade the screen size against my will. But for now, I'm running my 13 mini to the ground.
You can still get battery replacement at Apple.

I’m sure you can get a lot more mileage out of it yet. It’s a solid premium device.

I have been saying this and will continue to say this: Apple will not give 120hz to its non-pro lineup. They will artificially gimp it to 90hz and that’s all you’re going to get in the non-pro models. Tim thinks ‘it should be fast enough for anyone’

Good to see fantastic panels from Samsung powering the display. Will be great that the base model is finally getting 120Hz this year.

This is a distinct possibility, but even at 90 hz refresh rate its still much better than fixed 60 hz, but the non Pro models are HEAVILY rumoured to be getting the full fat 120 hz Promotion displays from multiple sources.

Fast refresh rate screens is just a standard/basic feature on Android phones, for example I brought a Samsung Galaxy A16 from Amazon UK for my Aunt last weekend for just £116 Sterling (about $US146) and that has a 90 hz display, so it is a bit of a joke now to be honest.

I like to occasionally use my phone when travelling as a bedside alarm clock in StandBy mode.

Currently, the display only stays on for 20 seconds each time I hit it :)
You dont need to hit it, proximity sensor means it only needs to see ‘something’ ‘near’ it. And its super sensitive.

Standby mode is a great feature and i could see why aod display works for that.

I have it disabled because when in switch my phone off i want it off. Aod is still very bright in a dark room.

and standby mode works great for me.

i have my screen timeout set to longest this is a big QoL improvement in day to day iphone use, regardless of aod.

That's what I am planning to do. It is a great device to be honest, it's not slow, and does literally everything I need it to do. Plus, no phone beats its form factor for me. It's just great.

Totally agree with you. I think 120hz is more likely, but knowing how Apple positions their products, and has been trying to maintain differentiation between the Pro and Non-Pro models, I absolutely could see this being a thing. 120hz is probably more likely. I just won't be surprised when Apple gimps it to keep the differentiation. 90hz would be a welcome improvement certainly though.

Same OLED panel? Most of the iPhone 16 Pro Max currently built have panels from LG with a severe bad color shift when changing viewing angle on the slightest tilt. Returned three devices already.
