ESim is available globally. In every iPhone.eSIM is such a nice feature. Too bad this is not available globally.

I‘ve never needed this ‚feature‘ even once. Give me eSIM-only now please. But you also get an easily swappable physical sim. I would prefer that.
You do business in China without a Chinese phone number? Impressive…I make frequent business trips to China and for a couple years now have only used eSIMs. A HK one if I will need a phone number (rarely the case anymore since I am generally in large cities and prefer to use public transport), otherwise just whatever I grab on the trip.com app or from china mobile's overseas online store if I don't need a #.
so frustrating, why didnt they do like the 17 air and do e-sim wordlwide ? now i'm left wondering whether I should wait for the 18
Previously it was:
Hong Kong, Macau, China models
2 plastic SIMs only
US models
2 eSIMs only
All other countries models
1 plastic SIM and 1 eSIM OR 2 eSIMs (both supported)
Now it looks like (excluding iPhone Air):
China models
2 plastic SIMs only
Hong Kong, Macau models
2 plastic SIMs or 2 eSIMs or a combination
Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United States, U.S. Virgin Islands models
2 eSIMs only
All other countries models
1 plastic SIM and 1 eSIM OR 2 eSIMs (both supported)
?
South Korea and Taiwan models are nano SIM + eSIMI’m in Japan and will need a SIM card slot for business trips to China. If it’s true that iPhone Pro models in Japan no longer support physical SIM cards, I’ll need to fly to Thailand to buy one.
It would have been ideal if Apple allowed customers to choose between eSIM-only and physical SIM card options when ordering online.
Why?I‘ve never needed this ‚feature‘ even once. Give me eSIM-only now please.
Yes, eSIM-only.You mean eSIM-only, right? If so, it's because some UK providers are slow to embrace eSIM, especially when it comes to moving them between devices.
If you really did mean eSIM, then ... umm, all the new phones support eSIM.
Very pleased the UK still has the option.
Depending on the model it can be between 1-3 hoursHow big of a battery difference are we talking about here?
It hinders me from having more battery life! Why?
How does the physical SIM slot hinder you from only using 2 eSIMs anyway? You can do that today!
Some countries' carriers don't support eSIM. I use the physical SIM when traveling abroad. If I had no physical SIM slot, I would have to overpay on roaming at some destinations, or overprices global eSIMs. I'll take the local physical SIM anytime (if they don't offer eSIM).
If you go to Bali for spring break like the rest of your kindI’m from Australia, and I don’t think that Australia is quite ready for a full eSIM-only experience. There are still quite a few MNVOs that don’t support eSIM, with some saying that it’s “on the way” and some not providing any indication whatsoever. My previous provider (Moose Mobile) falls into the latter category.
Buying an iPhone 17 Air in Australia would limit your choice in providers/phone plans.
I swear, Australia is so slow with implementing new technologies. We don’t even have RCS support on iPhone yet![]()
What about those of us on sim only contracts ?Very displeased it still does. yet another reason not to get this and wait for next year, maybe they’ll have a better offering without a pointless SIM card slot that takes up space and battery life.
(I’m just gonna assume this is not a rhetorical question.) It’s not Apple’s issue, so I’m going to guess if you don’t want to pay off the contract, you won’t be upgrading. What about those of us on sim only contracts ?
Yes, I communicate using wechat. You do business in China without a Chinese phone number? Impressive…
Why not make this as an option, I live in Europe and I want more battery and have no use for sim tray. You could choose storage space, screen size etc why not have a option with sim tray
When I went to Bali in 2024, I ended up getting a Telkomsel Tourist eSIM, as my SIM tray was taken up my Australian SIM card. Because Telkomsel doesn’t issue eSIMs via email, and only certain Telkomsel stores issue eSIMs, I had to get a taxi to their Kuta store just to pick up a tourist eSIM. So much more complicated than it needed to be 🙃If you go to Bali for spring break like the rest of your kindyou are much better off with a physical sim slot.
Physical SIMs are definitely better for international travel. I’ve been travelling through Europe using an O2 Pay As You Go SIM as they have free EU roaming. eSIM isn’t available on O2 Pay As You Go (or, it wasn’t available at the time I arrived in the UK), so I picked up a physical SIM from Sainsbury and put it in my phone. So easy!Physical SIMs are much better when you travel internationally. Sometimes I borrow a SIM temporarily from a friend there, put it in my phone and have 5G etc. working immediately. Hand it back later. Can borrow a SIM, put it in the iPhone and tether it to my MacBook Pro. Bang, I'm online. Do work. Emails. Look for stuff. Done. Hand the SIM back. Or hang onto it for a few days. Very convenient.
