All three colors are subject to scratches!
Put a case on as soon as you buy it !
Sounds drastic but it’s what has to be done with all 3 colors in the Pro and Pro Max
Apple has not given us the luxury of going caseless

anyone found a "film" / sticker for these yet? i'm probably going to put a case on mine, but ideally i'd like to have the plateau space grey / space black to match a black case or just for the entire thing to help prevent scratches when out of a case.

I haven't seen any of the 17 Pro's in person yet, but looking at the photos I think this is Apple's first genuinely ugly product, probably the worst since the PowerMac G3 All-in-one Molar Mac.
We do not care what anyone thinks who comments that "I haven't seen any of the 17 Pro's in person yet." The new phones are on the street. Sheesh.

Oh wow. That brings back fond memories of when devices didn't need cases.

Nobody thought about cases. You couldn't buy one - even if you wanted one.
The iPhones do not need cases today. Some users have just evolved to a place where they like personalizing their phones with [mostly] tacky cases.

Yes I've got one of these skins on and works well

I upgraded from a 16pro to a 17pro - wish I hadn’t bothered, the feel of the aluminium 17pro just feels cheap compared to the titanium 16pro.

The 17pro is also suffering quite badly with over heating.

Worst upgrade for a long time
The 17 Pro just came out. What qualifies you to make the statement that "The 17pro is also suffering quite badly with over heating" ?? Often new iPhones take days to stabilize. And of course, the phones we test in the Apple stores are all charging constantly as they get heavily used all day long, so they are certainly not representative of how we should expect phones to perform.

I disagree. Every single time they say the new phones are going to be easier to hold onto, I find that to not be true. Last weekend I went with my girlfriend to pick up her new 17PM, and before she put it in a case I got a chance to hold it, put it in my shirt pocket, pull it out as if I was going to take a photo, and it's still too thin and too slippery to securely hold onto.

I used to use Apple leather cases until they stopped making them, then got a FineWoven, which wasn't as bad as people said, eventually tried a minimalist Spigen case, and will probably get another when I get my 17PM or try a TechWoven case. I don't get a case for protection or to personalize my phone, but simply to make it possible to hold onto it without dropping it.

I have been going caseless for years now and will continue to do so with a silver 17 Pro.

I’ve had my silver Pro Max since launch day but the color is so neutral/ordinary, but clean looking. I think I’m gonna just go ahead and exchange it for cosmic orange because if next year rumors are true, this will be a one year phone anyway. I just think it’s going to be more fun to look at an orange than a silver for a year. Nobody cares about silver coloring. It’s OK to put some color in your life.

I don't understand why an article is needed to explain which colors to pick. Just pick the color that floats your boat.

Cosmic Orange here! I'm an orange color fan anyway, and I leave my phone mostly naked (other than those stick on top and bottom bumpers... I've done that the last couple of phones and as long as those top and bottom edges and corners are covered, my phone doesn't tend to scratch, break, etc). I love the way the phone looks mostly caseless, and I just think the phones feel better than any cases do.

That said, I went with an orange top and bottom for now, but I do think at some point I'm going to swap to a different color... I think two tone on these will look pretty good, but I certainly don't mind how it looks right now

Where did you get the bumpers from?

Comparing my 14Pro with the 17s/Air in the Apple Store yesterday was kinda like a recent trip to the Audi dealership in my pristine 2018 Q5: the side-by-side comparison is revealing (and devastating). As a result, I'll need a new phone to go with the new vehicle.

Was expecting this post on the first page. I completely agree, get the colour you need. I am hoping this thread is just for fun and excitement of the new phone being released and no one is taking it seriously that they need help getting the right colour. I received a new iPhone 17 Pro Max today in orange. I told our IT department that any colour is fine. It is going in a case anyways and the colour really won't matter after that. I do like the way the orange looks but would not give a second thought to blue or silver, it does not change who I am in any way shape or form.

The silver makes looking at the display feel like a smaller display because you can see the silver frame over the bezel, blue is the best

Needing to better grasp the iPhone is a fair argument. I do drop mine every month or two, usually on to concrete. For years now the iPhone Pros have tolerated those drops. But I keep my iPhones in a front pants pocket, and I prefer it slippery [and dimensionally smaller] for ease of getting it into and out of a pocket.

I always go with Silver when available because it's the best match with other apple stuff. Silver MBP, Silver iPad, etc. If you opt for blue or one of the 50 shades of space black, matching isn't a guarantee.
Agreed. Plus, having color in the immediate viewing environment distorts our perception of color on a display. So anyone caring about more accurate color perception is better off with something like space gray or dull silver. For decades now we have had some kind of space gray or dull silver choice on all of our Apple devices; but now Apple has screwed us with the 17 pro no-gray color choices.

[Yes one can hide an iPhone while doing color work, but that is a silly PITA.]

Personally I bought silver and will give no more thought to iPhone color, but there is no getting around my dislike of the bright white ceramic back. I really wish we had a choice for a gray ceramic back.

Yeah, I played with the display phones in the Apple store yesterday before picking up my order. The white ceramic back was truly puzzling.

They matched the ceramic color to the blue and orange aluminum - so I'd love to know why they stopped there. It makes the silver back a bit "busy".

The Silver must be feeling left out, not having an adjective.
Shiny Silver

I ordered a new phone for me on Saturday with pickup at the local Apple Store. I got the Deep Blue but I would have preferred a Jet Black.

My wife wanted to go back to a white phone after the purple 14 Pro Max, but since she wanted a Pro Max, she opted for Silver. However, Silver was out of stock at all 4 of our local Apple Stores.

I finally saw inventory come up this morning. Tried for one, but it disappeared before I was able to reserve it in the checkout process. Restarted the process and got one at a different store and had to schedule pickup for tomorrow (maybe all time slots gone today or it still needs to be unloaded from the crate). After I bought it, I decided to check inventory again and the store I ordered from had zero, but another store showed one. Then I refreshed and it was gone.

The Deep Blue was available through Sunday, but I don't see either of those colors available now locally. I wonder if the Silver was in higher demand or if Apple assumed lower demand and just made less Silver ones. Either way, I was relieved that I was able to get one reserved for my wife so she does not have to wait until October.

I am enjoying 17 Pro Max so far and I love the ESR MagSafe Black Silicone case I got for it. It gives me the black color I wanted, feels nice and grippy while being soft, it is pretty minimal while offering protection for the finish and includes a strong MagSafe magnet and a nice kickstand around the camera plateau. I used to use all my iPhones without a case, but since they broke the 6.7-inch size (now 6.9-inch) they just seem a little too easy to fumble. Plus this is my first iPhone case with a kickstand and I already loving that feature. My favorite phone to hold was the iPhone 5s and that came in some great finishes -- I remember when the gold was going on eBay for thousands of dollars through second-hand sellers.

My take on this vital conversation

Cosmic Orange
The brave and outlandish consideration. A truculent option for a obstreperous world. Taking ownership of the rusting structure that our planet wearily lays upon, plagued by clowns, charlatans and snake oil, but hoping with the optimism of a lunatic that perhaps a bright sunrise may bring better days ahead. The phone of the innovators, the creatives, and the certifiably insane.

…or just ppl who love their old high school that donned black and orange proudly…
