For me coming from a iphone 12 pro max, this update means a crucial update in terms of: Ram, Cameras, Screen Size, Refresh Rate, WI-FI etc.
Exact same thing here. My poor 12 Pro Max has been a great phone but had its screen replaced and it’s never been the same. Folks, don’t use a 3rd party for such a used feature. Learn from my mistake.

Oh my God. Can we please stop reporting and promoting Aluminium as a feature plus. it's an obvious cost cutting measure. Squeezing every last penny out of us all.
I had that same thought initially too. However, lighter weight and improved heat dissipation are improvements that come from using aluminum.

As for the aluminum materiality, they’ll probably come up with some clever marketing — pitching it as a hybrid, specially engineered aluminum that’s stronger, more durable, and more capable than previous iterations. Kind of like when they introduced the 7000 series aluminum, making an already common, less novel material sound unique and new again.

My only gripe with switching back to aluminum is that I never use a phone case, and while my phone doesn’t drop often, it does happen occasionally. With the titanium frame, it’s held up wonderfully — no dents or marks. Its rigidity has also kept the glass front and back from breaking, cracking, or chipping. I definitely don’t have that same confidence with aluminum.

But I am sure, clever Apple will try to convince me otherwise. However, real world use might tell me otherwise.

"Aerospace/aircraft grade" is a fairly commonly used marketing term for aluminium. Since it has no actual definition, no certification. As long as it's used somewhere in aircraft. You could make the same claim for lower grades such as those used in drinks cans since you'll find it used in aircraft in places like miniature pipework.

As per "Apple in China" book, putting the antennae on the higher part of the iPhone will impact the radiation levels close to the ear, and hence the brain. That is why, on the 1st iPhone they had to move it all on the lower part of the back, creating a long inner cable to move it down. That's why the original iPhone, who was also metal on the back (owned one) had the plastic stripe on the bottom.

So, for Apple to move in the camera module, it must have found a clever way of shielding or containing the levels. Unless, with aluminum, they go back to the frame itself being an antenna, but I guess that the "you don't hold it right" antenna gate has taught them to avoid this solution like plague. :)

So “soda can grade” it is.

Eagerly waiting to see the 17 Pro Max. Hope the orange color does materialize. Also hoping that the rumored camera upgrades are true. Expecting Apple to announce the event anytime soon.

Me too from the 13 generation. I’m looking at double the storage, triple the RAM, much better cameras, Wi-Fi 7, and more. Enough to notice a significant improvement across the board, unlike people who upgrade every year.

I’m looking forward to the better telephoto camera, I just hope they don’t penny pinch on the sensor size. Absolute minimum of 2.55 like the Pixels please, ideally a bit bigger
Right. The most important spec of the tele camera will be its sensor size, not its pixel count or exact ‘zoom’ figure.

I still don’t think Apple will do a zoom (e.g. 5–8×). Zooms don’t make much sense in a space-, weight-, and exposure-constrained environment, and even less so if Apple increases the sensor size from the 16 Pro. You desperately need to collect as much light as you can in the smallest 3D space, and that points to a fixed-focal length.

based on the rumors it appears the upgrade is bigger than what people thought it would be
In what sense?

We still haven’t seen reliable camera specs, but nothing rumoured seems all that impressive to me. Certainly not revolutionary. (The Air is closer to a revolution.)

Incremental improvement is all we can expect in this old form factor nowadays. Not really Apple’s fault.

Still, over a few generations – a typical user’s upgrade cycle – the changes add up to significant.

5000 mah battery
Anti reflective display
Massive upgrade to Telephoto lens
More ram
Cooling system

All huge improvements from what the iPhone currently has

Glad they’re switching to aluminum, it’s lighter than titanium and also better at heat dissipation. Again, I don’t know how they’re going to pitch this, because the ENTIRE iPhone 15 Pro’s ad campaign was one word. Titanium. lol. Anyway, people complaining aren’t really seeing the bigger picture. Most people have a case on their phone, and I doubt anyone needs the sheer strength of titanium in a smartphone anyway. As for the back, it will be lighter and more sturdy than the back glass, which is known to break when dropped. So I actually really like this switch.

Apple have gotten away with far more egregious design decisions in the past by simply leveraging the fact that their average customer will lap up whatever marketting they put out.

Nano Texture would make me get the Pro over the Air, would love to have it on the iPhone as well! Can’t wait for the event.

That’s why you’ll buy a “bumper” with ground-breaking innovative design for it. ;)
Ha… nope, always naked for me! With the exception being some concerts, where I’ll bring the Apple silicone case, since it makes zooming with the camera button easier to operate one-handed.

I'm skipping this iteration for the first time since I upgraded to the 3G.
Same. I very rarely skip. I think I skipped the XS and the 14, can’t remember any others. Maybe the 6s or something. But this one… man, it’s just so ugly, and I don’t like cases. The 16 Pro is so good, I just don’t know how they’re going to convince people to go for the 17. More RAM is the only thing I can think of that I’d miss.

In the past, the dark blue option and the 48-megapixel Telephoto camera, would make me hesitate to upgrade from 16 Pro Max to 17 Pro Max. And of course, the new chip + new iOS made it feel like a whole new phone.

I bought the 16PM for Apple Intelligence, terrible misstep.

The product lifecycle has changed, it's a nice baby step forward from the previous year, but now I see upgrading iPhone, like upgrading a MacBook; every 3-4 years (maybe 5) to really see the difference.

Still, the 48-megapixel Telephoto camera, sounds interesting, hahaha
