Would be cool I guess but I think we would have known for sure by now. As smaller Dynamic Island should mean tighter spacing between the components.

I honestly don’t understand the hate towards the notch or dynamic island… To me it became part of the identity of an iPhone (much like the circle button below the screen before it)…
If it impacted 16:9 videos I would get the issue, but virtually no one is watching any 2 hour 21:9 movies on an iPhone.
I just wish Apple would stick with a notch/island design and size, and only change it when they actually have a real life impact, like when they removed Touch ID and created Face ID/notch (albeit not everyone loved it lol), and when they eventually completely remove any cutouts (and probably keep the Dynamic Island notification UI).

Yeah, I know I’m one of the few MR users that is betting for a thermal camera, and it’s a wild guess. I mean, it’s not likely because at this point it would have already leaked, but that invitation teaser screams “thermal camera” and it would be super cool. But yeah, not likely.
I’d love if Apple would be the kind of company to lead their flagship marketing with nerdy features like thermal imaging, but modern Apple is really not that.

I guess you never watch any of those very widescreen videos on your iPhone on a plane, or even just movie trailers in a coffee shop. The notch and Dynamic Island are irritating, although the Dynamic Island is actually worse than the notch in this regard IMO.

The dynamic island is stupid and it needs to go. I've used similar software on Android phones, and I turned it off almost immediately. Just say you can't get rid of the lame notch yet Apple, and leave it at that.

I mean in 2025, we cannot have an iPhone without notches and islands??? Sad. Even the MacBooks have them due to design language which means marketing.

Are you ok? People are allowed to change their opinion about things. In my opinion Dynamic Island was always a stop gap feature until technology allowed it go under display - much like the home button was until the iPhone went (almost) full screen. They made a feature out of a hardware limitation as companies have for years.
Although 007's comment devolved into nonsense, the initial point was correct. The Dynamic Island is both a status bar for an underlying function and a short cut to accessing it -- I find it very helpful. If it shrinks too much or disappears completely, those "stop gap feature" functionalities should be replaced via another UI mechanism, probably at a similar scale in a similar location. And what better way to highlight it than a black background? Keep the DI!

If the iPhone 17 is getting the same screen as the Pro, as rumoured, I find it unlikely that one will have the smaller Dynamic Island and the other not.

So I figure the regular iPhone 17 will get this too. Especially since doubling up the transmitter and receiver behind one lens likely saves costs.

wait.. that "new" microphone indicator that used to be inside the Dynamic Island and now it's outside of it makes sense.
If the Dynamic Island is smaller, it could mean there's probably no pixels inside of it?

The new indicator design:

Maybe they made that change to have it ready for smaller Dynamic Island on the new iPhone 17 Pro and to get people used to it.

It's a good spot. Is that little area of screen between the camera and the sensors redundant now?

If the rumor is true that all the 17s will have the same display, it’s possible the Pros will get a smaller island to stand out from the rest—or at least I hope so.

Possible that it can happen. Dynamic island has remained the same for 3 years now. Will know for sure within the next few days! Excited to see the new iPhones.

You can make your wish come through every time by putting your phone in your pocket, a bag or a drawer.
...but then it incessantly buzzes, chirps, dings and vibrates.😠
Airplane/hide mode then means I miss "important" txt messages, spouse calls, prompts to stand-up, daily reminders, weather reports, step-counts, UPS deliveries, Robovac status, thermostat status,....😱
😂

What’s shrinking is the black cutout, which can’t display anything. By shrinking it, the space the Dynamic Island can display stuff in actually increases.

They won’t have the same display, the Pro displays will be brighter, and there have been rumors what while the non-Pros will support 120 Hz, they may not support VRR and AOD.

All the more reason to believe that when the island shrinks, it won’t be across the full lineup.
