It has puzzled me for a while why Apple doesn't use an under display lens for face id. The selfie cam could then be a pinhole, like most phones rather than a long dark sausage (maybe someone could creat an app to turn the dynamic island into a sausage dog)
because they can't

I wouldn't be surprised if they've already solved how to move the Dynamic Island and FaceID all under the display.

It's just a matter of milking users slowly making it smaller one millimetre/year for the next 2-3 years.

Maybe they can keep pushing it up mm by mm, as well, to get rid of that little worthless stripe of lit screen?

Whoops, they recreated the notch! Which is better than a silly little pill cutout anyway…ah well.

I'm ready for Apple to get back to innovating instead of being just another tech company. I hope the slower than expected iPhone 16 sales are a wakeup call.
It wont be, they are still selling more than all other brands combined. Apple lost innovation years ago, and seeing as other phones have full under display technology and Apple will brag about a smaller notch, reinforces that.

That’s not really how engineering in this field works.

All the leading Android flagships have pinholes. None have solved it either. So unless you believe Apple is truly the most innovative one (they’re not; Chinese companies in particular have gotten much better at electronics and miniaturization), then you’d have to think someone else solved it by now and is also holding back a good implementation.

I believe there was some under-camera lens in some phone a couple years back but the quality was terrible. So there are still issues with it.

And even if Apple “solved” it in some lab prototype, that doesn’t mean it’s of practical size and manufacturable at scale.

Get your sand off my screen!
Just put a bezel at the top and fill it with as many sensors and cameras and speakers as they want.

I rather have a better quality front facing camera then the awful ones in any device that offers it under display. A lot of others companies want to be first to do stuff and do t care as much about quality

If they're doing it only on the Pro Max model due to supply constraints, doesn't it make more sense to put it into the smaller Pro model since it could benefit more from a smaller Dynamic Island? I hate it when the Dynamic Island collapses because I happen to be using my Apple TV to watch football while I have the Dynamic Island showing the score from another game I'm interested in. It just shoves the logos for both teams to one side with no score, and then has the little Apple TV remote icon on the other.

I listen to audio a lot on my phone. The Dynamic Island allows me to see when audio is playing, and control it while still seeing the rest of what I’m doing.

Also live sports scores are cool, as are things like uber tracking.

I’m a fan of the utility of the Dynamic Island. I really like knowing when something is playing on my iPhone, and Dynamic Island shows me that. I don’t get the hate for it… I think it’s a clever evolution of the notch, and is way more functional. Wouldn’t want to go back to a phone without it 🤷‍♂️
Yes, the Dynamic Island is very cool and I see very use cases, I love that I can switch to other tasks that use the DI. It's a very good feature and I also don't get the hate.

I still don't get the extreme hate for bezels. I think it looks better if there was a slim top bezel that spans the whole width of the device like current Sony smartphones. The status bar can then be functional again like the old days with all the room.

You are absolutely right that a smaller display gets more from decreasing the size of the Dynamic Island.

But to Apple, it's just another feature upgrade and primarily something they're spending money on creating to get you, the buyer, to feel the push towards upgrading and going for a Pro Max, nothing less.

Apple could then obviously just increase the price of the smaller 6.3" Pro. But then that would bring its starting price beyond the $999 and too close to the $1199 Pro Max, breaking the value/$ ladder.

And when they announce earnings it will be another recording breaking quarter.

The hate I think is mostly because it’s always there. As a UI feature it’s fine, but most folks would like to have it disappear when they full screen a video for ex. Eventually everything it’s designed to mask (faceid, front camera, etc) will probably end up under-screen and then if dynamic island sticks around itll be a dismissable UI feature, until then it’s gonna annoy people

I'll just wait till 18 Pro then. I dont see myself ever buying a Max. Especially not at 6.9"

Still can't believe how people just ate the marketing bullkrap of the dynamic island with the 14 pro. It wasn't and never was a feature. Nothing of how Apple uses it where they blend in the pixelless area in those notification bubbles is awesome. All it is is they put more black space around it, that's it. But the amount of people who just went nuts about how awesome it was still shocks me to this day.

The only thing I like about it on my 15 Pro is that it looks more modern, that's it.

I wonder how they're going to market it getting smaller.
"Now more of the black space in notification bubbles are pixels"?

Don't necessarily agree. Its very useful for tracking live activities and some games utilise it. Also the animations make an otherwise dead zone of the screen more useful/interactive

That said i'll be glad when the size decreases.

I'm a Pro Max user personally but I think it's pretty stupid that only the Max is getting the smaller Dynamic Island. It's clearly miniaturization of some kind, so why wouldn't the smaller model get it as well? Plus I think the Dynamic Island looks especially bad on the smaller screen because it takes up more space, comparatively.

After all these years it’s time to get rid of everything and have just a screen, they should by now be able to put camera underneath. One thing I dislike with apple are the notches and cut outs. Inovative, don’t just make it smaller for another few years
FaceID is not just a camera, that's why they cannot have just a screen.

Because they need to project infrared dots through the screen, then accurately read them with an IR camera that will likely not work under a screen.

Thank you, been saying this since day one. It was just polishing the turd that is a hole punch display. None of the animations use the area that used to be the notch, it's just wasted space anyway. And now we have more fragmentation in how the iOS interface works. It's also being used as a band-aid over how bad the iOS notification system is as a whole. That needs a complete re-think.

I really enjoy that it shows me that something is playing, what it is, and gives me a quick and easy way to control what’s playing.

Does that utility not count? Back in the day when something was playing on your iPhone, there would be a little “play” triangle in the status bar. That was nice.

Then that went away for many years, and there was no way of seeing whether or not audio was playing visually.

The Dynamic Island not only brought back the ability to see whether something was playing, but also gave you a way to interact with it without leaving your current screen.

I find that super useful. I use it all the time while I’m playing chess online; I can skip or rewind tracks without leaving the app.

The amount of people on this forum who don’t see any usefulness for the Dynamic Island is honestly surprising to me.
