My wife has a 17PM and based on my experience with it I'm guessing people are having buyers remorse: its just too big and heavy. It truly is the dump truck of phones lol. Its powerful and capable if you can handle it.

its not really much different than the last few rounds of pro maxes 🤷‍♂️ I upgraded from the 15 and can't tell the difference. and its prob lighter than my old 13

Some people have big hands, but I only have average sized hands. It's impossible for me to use the Pro Max one-handed. I tried at the Apple store, but didn't work for me. I can imagine people buying it and soon finding out it's a hassle to use. I often use my iPhone one-handed.
Haven’t used a phone 1 handed in a decade and I have big hands.

Nobody in my family does 1 handed phone stuff no matter what size phone they have.

Is this a big deal?

A good portion of these is downgrading to the Pro as the screen is getting too big to fit in one hand. I switched down to Pro from Pro Max for the first time since the iPhone X
I did exactly this. It’s too freakin big and heavy. The regular pro is honestly a bit small. The air is the perfect screen size, I wish they would come out with a 6.5” pro.

Maybe it has something to do with iPhone 17 Pro Max being the buggiest iPhone hardware ever?

The bottom speaker makes a cracking sound when the charging cable is plugged in, all the cameras (including FaceID) make an audible click when they are turned on, the back camera array makes an audible hiss sound when it's on, etc.

Nothing that completely ruins the phone, but I fully expect something to fall off or stop working sooner or later.

I know some people who can get any phone free when they renew their contract. So they get the most expensive phone possible. Trade it in, and continue to use their old phone, which is much easier to do now the jump in capability is getting smaller with each generation. The trade-in pays for most of their contract.
This is so convoluted and wasteful. Just get a prepaid plan and save that way. I pay $25 a month for unlimited everything with visible.

My 17 pro does none of these things. You may have a defective model.

I feel like I read the article pretty thoroughly, yet I can't find "what" it is being traded in for. Knowing what the iPhone 17 Max was traded for adds context. If they are trading for iPhone 17 Pro, then it might not be size, it could be battery life. I know a few people that have the Max varient just due to the extra battery. This year the Pro's battery is so good you don't need the Max. Its interesting that its the highest traded in phone, but without knowing what it was traded for it makes it hard to make sense of this.

SellCell attributes early trade-ins primarily to strong resale pricing. Average resale values for mint-condition iPhone 17 Pro Max devices currently sit around $967.50. Premium smartphones can function as short-term assets that owners may sell to release cash when needed, so the iPhone 17 Pro Max's rise to the top of trade-ins likely reflects broader economic conditions.

This is sad... if you can't afford a $1200 dollar phone, don't get one. It's that simple.

I find this very interesting because it is the first iphone that I don't regret upgrading to since my upgrade from 8 to 11 (that jump was insane). I upgrade every two years. So from 11 to 13 it was a bit better, from 13 to 15 I regretted a lot. 14 and 15 were sht... I have never touched a 16.
But they finally got most things right with the camera on 17, and it is not over sharpening anymore. The best iPhone by far.
