Can anyone with an iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max force the phone onto EDGE (2G) and verify whether mobile data actually works? My phone shows 'E', voice works, but no IP traffic passes. I've tested with TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad in Italy.
I doubt it would work, I believe most Mobile networks have switched off the customer data connection capability on their 2G infrastructure. I know here in South Africa 2G is mainly used to provide voice services and in some cases, low-speed data connectivity used by m2m devices and legacy IoT devices, they no longer allow smartphones to carry data over it.

Modern apps and websites are data heavy so it's extremely unlikely you'd have the speed necessary to load anything as you're finding out. You may manage to send a WhatsApp message containing only text or an email but that's about it.
2g edge is to be supported here in the UK until 2033. Not sure about where you are?
