There is nothing good in “moving telephoto lens” (i.e. variable aperture). That’s another part to break over time. Even Samsung stopped adding this to their flagships, because it is redundant. And believe me I’ve had it on my old s10+, it didn’t serve any utility, couldn’t see any sorts of sharpness increase that Samsung was bragging about.

But what am I talking about… instead of cutting the crap they are adding it, and sensor shift OIS stabilization proves that. Few drops (even in rugged UAG case) and your camera will start wobbling like a subwoofer when you listen to Skrillex.

Mobile camera should stay mobile, “KISS” formula. Right now they are trying to cosplay already non-existent point-and-shoots. But it is not needed since point-and-shoots had real optical zoom systems and components that could work for decades. They had digital zoom only for “out of zoom” range, not in-between camera sensors. Nowadays there is a huge gap between 1x and 5x sensors on iPhone, and 8x will only increase it. It would be ridiculous for Apple to add fourth camera unit.

In smartphones where every millimeter counts it is much harder to control consistency and quality. For example in s25 ultra there is a wide issue of “loose camera” as users call it. But things are much worse: many units have faulty OIS and AF systems. Increasing complexity of elements often backfires in faulty units

It doesn't really zoom OPTICALLY. It's just a telephoto prime lens. It would be nice to add just two lenses: Ultra wide and wide. With wide lens, Apple could use 100mp or 200mp sensor just like Samsung did.
well... that's not clear as of now... maybe it will zoom optically.

don't make us mad: same cameras for the pro and pro max please... pro max is way too big in my opinion.

It really would be nice if everything in the Pro series was equivalent in terms of technologies. Very disappointing.

I'm skipping the 17 pro update if this is the case.

Apple, listen, I'm not carrying around a phablet as my phone. We all know you have the capability to put these flagship camera updates into both pro models. The next year's model always, somehow, miraculously, has the same cameras the following year.

Stop screwing your pro-line customers with these Max-only updates. These flagship camera updates are mostly why I would consider upgrading.

If the Pro Max once again has a better camera than the regular Pro, I’ll vote with my wallet and skip the upgrade. Really not a fan of when Apple does that on some generations.
Regarding wanting feature parity, small phone-lovers went through all the stages of grief and arrived at acceptance a long time ago, so we're way ahead of you. (Regarding wanting a small iPhone, we're currently somewhere between bargaining and depression.)

Also yes, Apple sometimes gives feature parity both sizes of Pro, but all that really means is they're withholding features from the Max. A feature that doesn't compromise UX requires space in the form of some combination of hardware, battery, and thermals, therefore the more space there is the more features one can add. A bigger phone has more potential for features. That's just physics and reality. But the catch is bigger phone users pay for it with not only higher price but also having to lug around a bigger phone. It's all trade offs.

Camera upgrades between generations are so so small imo. Last time I noticed an actually noticeable upgrade was when I went from the X to the 11 Pro. Photos with even just a bit of sunlight were all blown out on the X while they were not at all on the 11 Pro.

Exactly. The camera upgrades will be the main reason for people to upgrade this year (unless you’re a fan of the color orange) and a lot of Apple customers are now wise to Apple’s method of making a camera upgrade exclusive to the Pro Max for one year to drum up sales with that model. They know Apple could’ve made the same upgrade to the Pro if they wanted to.

The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a significantly upgraded Telephoto camera, according to a post this week from Instant Digital, an account with nearly 1.5 million followers on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Reporter 1: We need to do some research and make sure it's legitimate source.
Reporter 2: But, they have 1.5 million followers.

But with the same sensor since the iPhone 14 Pro, right? Hopefully not.

What do you mean? 15 Pro used same main sensor/wide sensor like 14 Pro, but introduced new telephoto (Pro Max). 16 Pro carried same telephoto, but introduced new main and wide sensors.

iPhone 14 Pro/15 Pro

Main - IMX803
Wide - IMX633

iPhone 16 Pro

Main - IMX903
Wide - IMX972

What a professional product hyping. Right on time ! There are at least 3 hypes per page for this (hope not) super ugly device.

I had a thought. If the Pro had all the features of the Pro Max, would you be willing to pay the additional $200 (Pro Max base price of $1,199) for it?

What is your prediction for the tele on the 17 Pro/Max? I’m assuming the main and wide will be the same as the 16 Pro.
