YouTube channel Front Page Tech on Monday shared renders of iOS 19's alleged new design. The end of the video also revealed a new feature that is supposedly planned for the iPhone 17 Pro models later this year: dual video recording.

According to Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will allow users to record video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously. This is a capability that is already available through select apps on the App Store, such as Snapchat, but it would now be available through the built-in Camera app. Samsung introduced a built-in dual video recording feature on the Galaxy S21 and newer.

Dual video recording in the Camera app would be useful for content creators on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, allowing them to easily overlay a shot of their face over a world-facing video, so that viewers can watch them speak and react.

Skip to the 9:13 mark of Front Page Tech's video to hear about this particular rumor.

Apple should release all of the iPhone 17 models in September. It is unclear why this seemingly basic feature will allegedly require an iPhone 17 Pro model.

What do you mean unclear? It’s Apple, it’s clear they want you to upgrade, because they have nothing hardware to offer.
Well see, in order to record multiple videos they needed multiple cameras. This feature has only been possible since the iPhone 4 added the front facing camera 15 years ago.

When I saw this headline I thought maybe we'd be able to record 3D videos... although... eh. The rear facing cameras are so close together that that doesn't do much for a 3D effect, and I think a much better 3D effect can be done via just having AI add a depth map to a 2D video.

Filmic makes a free App called DoubleTake - which does this on my 15 Pro and (IIRC my 13 Pro as well). It's pretty cool.

Not sure why this would be touted as a new feature unless Apple does something cool like 360 degree video with it.

How about something as basic as being able to switch between the front and back cameras while recording, been waiting on this for years and it never shows up!!

Apple just now gave us a pause button so give them time. They can only innovate so quickly.

Anyone considered this could have something to do with bringing some type of rudimentary form of immersive video to the iPhone?
Especially if the camera is doing 8K footage, and the front camera going up to 24 MP.
obviously won’t be as good as a dedicated multi thousand dollar camera, but… maybe?
Especially with the immersive video app coming to macOS just yesterday.

John did a good video, but I see absolutely zero reason to upgrade from the 16 PM. Cheaper materials, less zoom, untested wifi modem chip on larger scale, and slight upgrade on selfie cam, 48 mp on rear zoom....

Meanwhile, missed AI on the current device, there is an app that allows you to record from and rear cameras at the same time. Not a feature I care about or would ever use.

Apple has become a company in search of creating problems and then providing a solution rather than actual innovation. 2 year cycles for HW and SW would be better as well as much more polished software as 18.4 is the first stable'ish release to date. And that's with them missing the headline features for Siri who is just dumber by the week it feels.

I am on the 15PM, first time I don’t have the newest model. I have zero desire for the 17 series unless the Air turns out to be incredible somehow. I completely agree with you on materials, go from titanium to cheap aluminum is such a downgrade. Apple will probably say they had to do it due to the tariff environment. AAPL needs a new leader who cares more about their stakeholders who aren’t shareholders. It’s why founders are better CEOs than greed-minded people like Tim Crook.

I hope this isn’t the big iPhone 17 Pro video recording update rumor they were saying weeks ago. What they need to focus on is the main sensor.

Completely agree with you. I have found the battery in the 16 PM to hold up much better than the 15 PM I had did. The 15 seemed like Apple cost cut on the quality of battery as it degraded very quickly on a lower count of cycles, but that aside, there wasn't a meaningful difference in the two.

the 17 Pro, only thing I like on it is a case will keep it from rocking with the elevated corners LOL. Outside of that, Apple has lost its way.

MacRumours please stop giving fpt attention, he’s a clown who doesn’t know what he’s talking about :(
He honestly gives me tech tabloid vibes. He has good video production quality, but that’s about it. I’m hoping nothing that he leaks ends up being true.

Is this something people want? I for the life of me can not think of anything beyond a niche edge use case for this feature.

Maybe if it lets me record all 3 lenses at once so I can then edit together later, but both front and rear at the same time seems odd.

Something that would be really slick is do some smartness merging to simulate focus pulls and such
