YouTube channel Front Page Tech on Monday shared renders of iOS 19's alleged new design. The end of the video also revealed a new feature that is supposedly planned for the iPhone 17 Pro models later this year: dual video recording.

According to Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will allow users to record video with the front and rear cameras simultaneously. This is a capability that is already available through select apps on the App Store, such as Snapchat, but it would now be available through the built-in Camera app. Samsung introduced a built-in dual video recording feature on the Galaxy S21 and newer.

Dual video recording in the Camera app would be useful for content creators on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, allowing them to easily overlay a shot of their face over a world-facing video, so that viewers can watch them speak and react.

Apple should release all of the iPhone 17 models in September. It is unclear why this seemingly basic feature will allegedly require an iPhone 17 Pro model.

I was gonna “believe” until I saw Jon Prosser has said this…

So we NEED A NEW IPHONE to have a feature available since forever in Android??. Is it because Apple CPU and hardware are so overhyped but can’t actually deliver that old feature also available in many camera apps????.
Surely apple will close the API so nobody can offer the function unless you buy a new iPhone.

Is this something people want? I for the life of me can not think of anything beyond a niche edge use case for this feature.

Maybe if it lets me record all 3 lenses at once so I can then edit together later, but both front and rear at the same time seems odd.

Something that would be really slick is do some smartness merging to simulate focus pulls and such
Influencers can film themselves reacting to real-life events in real time.
Duh.

Sooo, a software update. Could run on an iPhone 11 too. In fact Filmic pro add on app did that a few years back. Anyways, fine if they add it, but then i am still needing 8K 30fps as well. The killer feature. It’s killer if it has it and i kill it if doesnst… =)

„New“ feature or also called a joke.
Which Samsung galaxy had this feature already? Galaxy 3 or 4, how many years ago?
Fine for adding these but kind of promoting such a stuff as a new „feature“ (I know it’s from a blogger) and might holding it back for older devices is ridiculous.

This is one of those “I’m surprised it’s not already a feature” moments.

Have it on my S22 Ultra, tried it once, promptly forgot about it…

Wasn’t this a delayed feature of the XS, possibly buried in later iOS 12 betas? I thought they introduced it with iOS 13 and showcased in the Shot On iPhone 11 video with Selena Gomez if I remember correctly. Maybe now it’ll allow both cameras to record 4k 60fps???

Snapchat has done this for a decade, I wonder how Apple will try to gaslight us into believing you have to have a 17 Pro to do it though.
Apple probably won’t explain the reason why only 17 Pro/17 Pro Max owners can get it because they have no legit answer. So they just ignore and carry on. The only possible answer could be that all cameras are now equal which is weak in my opinion.

This could so easily be added as a software update to current devices...

I have a guess that the large camera bump serves more than just an esthetic purpose it might introduce a new notification feature on the back of the device. Perhaps it includes an LED array or a small secondary display for alerts. It could also function as a camera assistant, helping users stay properly framed when taking photos with the rear cameras :)

Would love to see this feature on the new iPhones. Will not be surprised if it is available only for the latest model. Have been using some 3rd party apps for this now. DoubleTake, for me works properly in Portrait mode only. In landscape, the front facing camera video appears inverted.

Why don't all iPhone 17 models have dual video recording? Why is it only available on the Pro models? But Samsung did it more than a decade ago.

I know it won't happen but I wish they brought back stainless steel. that was the differentiator for me since I don't care about the camera.

When I saw this headline I thought maybe we'd be able to record 3D videos... although... eh. The rear facing cameras are so close together that that doesn't do much for a 3D effect, and I think a much better 3D effect can be done via just having AI add a depth map to a 2D video.

If you consider spatial videos a 3D effect, then you can record those with the pros since iPhone 15 Pro. Also spatial photos as well. These can be used in the Vision Pros or converted to be used in others like the Meta Quest. Based on my personal usage, it seems like the spatial videos from the Vision Pros seem more realistic, probably from the spacing between the cameras. But maybe technically they're the same effect as the iPhone recorded ones.
