Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models are rumored to be equipped with a vapor chamber cooling system, and a leaker known as Majin Bu today shared a photo of an alleged copper thermal plate for the system.

Many high-end Android smartphones like Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra are equipped with a vapor chamber cooling system, which can manage heat dissipation inside the devices more effectively than the graphite sheets used in iPhones. If this rumor is true, the iPhone 17 Pro models would be the first iPhone models to use a vapor chamber.

A vapor chamber would help to prevent the iPhone 17 Pro models from overheating during intensive, sustained tasks like gaming. It would consist of a thin, sealed metal chamber containing a small amount of liquid. When the iPhone heats up, the liquid would turn to vapor and dissipate across the chamber's surface area. Eventually, the vapor would cool down and condense, allowing for the process to repeat. This system would help to move heat away from the A19 Pro chip that is expected to power the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Majin Bu has a mixed track record with Apple rumors. Most recently, they accurately leaked that iPadOS 26 would add a Mac-like menu bar to the iPad, but they incorrectly claimed that iOS 26 would add Stage Manager to iPhone models with a USB-C port.

We cannot confirm if this component is actually related to the iPhone 17 Pro models, which are expected to be unveiled by Apple in September.

Can we please start with iPhones not immediately overheating when used outside and keeping the display readable and not turning down to 0% when exposed to a bit of sun light?
They say they have improved the cooling with every generation since the iPhone 13, but it’s still the same problem because the performance gains of the chip offset the improvements in cooling.

Ha exactly. It doesn’t even take that much sun. I’d say the sun issue and the fact that the phones get pretty darn hot with fast charging are big annoyances. Maybe this will help with the charging issue?
 
What are y’all doing with your iPhones to make them get hot so easily? My SE3 overheated 1 time after being left in direct sunlight for several hours in a black case. My 15 Pro has never overheated and I take advantage of full brightness in direct sunlight often as well as game at max settings connected to an external 4k monitor.

Of course, I’m still excited for the vapor chamber.

Heh, surprised it is not just my 78% iPhone 11 Pro doing this stuff😃

I am trying not to use it in hot areas, it overheats to infinity.

Better to charge overnight or with slower power bricks. Fast charging will be always hot. But you can use a lifehack to prevent extra heat: turn iPhone off and let it charge in this state, almost no heat generated

Like Unix and macOS, I'm fairly sure iPhone does a bunch of stuff when plugged in that it's trying hard not to do on battery for the sake of your battery life, a bunch of system cleanup stuff, there's even a message now about "paused to optimize battery" or "paused to optimized system performance" for photo backups.

While this is fine advice much of the time, there's a reason it will turn itself on after charging for a while and tries to make sure you can't do this all of the time, and it's best not to try to

On a hot summer day (90 degrees plus), if you go outside and stand in the sun with the sunlight directly on the display at 100% brightness, it will most likely dim within a minute or so.

My 15 Pro gets cookin' when I'm using maps + GPS. In fairness, that's on a motorcycle in tropical climates so I'm not necessarily surprised. It hasn't seemed to bother things much. (Unlike the vibration which destroyed a previous phone's camera focus.) On a couple of occasions it's gone into thermal shutdown mode which is the behavior I'd expect. I run a Garmin GPS alongside for actual directions so the most I get is slightly annoyed that I lose my music for a bit.
 
Is it just me, or iPhones and iPad still overheats making a facetime call?
I mean, apart from a slightly improved camera, everything else is roughly the same as older devices.
I'm baffled that regardless much lower cpu/gpu consumption compared to much older devices, they overheat just as much!
Not to mention battery draining...

What am I missing?
Any expert here?

I have strong doubts about this.
Are you saying it doesn't even heat up duribg facetime video calls??

My iPhone 16 Pro does way better staying cooler than my 13 Pro did. I live in a hot, humid environment and my 16 Pro doesn’t overheat nearly as quickly as my older phones did.

It’s only lower consumption at the same CPU/GPU performance, but the newer chips also have more processing power. The higher power efficiency is only a means to the end of enabling more processing power without heating up even more. And they constantly add more software functions to make use of that processing power.
