Apple's iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have been runaway hits in China, but their success has little to do with new AI or camera features – it's largely down to the color. Or at least, that's according to a new report.

The Cosmic Orange finish made available exclusively on Apple's high-end Pro models has been widely dubbed "Hermès orange" by Chinese consumers who associate the vivid hue with the French luxury brand's signature color.

The Financial Times reports that videos showcasing the orange iPhones have gone viral on Chinese social media since the devices launched in September.

"It sounds simple, but it's the external obvious changes to design, which includes the introduction of a shout-out orange colour, that pulled out early upgraders," IDC senior research director Nabila Popal told the publication.

It's not just visual appeal that's driving sales either. In Mandarin, the word for orange sounds similar to the word for success, adding another psychological association that has apparently resonated with buyers. Many social media posts about Apple's premium iPhones include well-wishes playing on the linguistic connection.

Apple reported $26 billion in Chinese revenue during its fiscal first quarter, a 38 percent year-over-year increase and the company's best-ever performance in the region. China now accounts for roughly one-fifth of Apple's total global sales.

The results are a major turnaround after nearly three years of declining sales in the country, where Apple has faced stiff competition from domestic rivals like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo.

For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, expected to launch this September alongside the company's first foldable device, Apple will almost certainly introduce a new signature color. Rumors suggest that Apple is considering a brown coffee-like shade, purple, and burgundy.

I live in Paris and someone in my familly even work at Hermès HQ, litteraly no one makes this association. The only association I have heard are ones with the utilitarian look or construction worker look.

I am not surprised nonetheless mainstream chinese culture value a lot apperance/brands as a status symbol. They spend more for their perceived image rather than themselve/product itself if that make sense. Saudians are a bit like that too btw. No hate here just to make it clear - just noticing different cultures around status/appearance. It's funny because the trend here in Paris is actually the opposite for those who earns a lot : good quality expansive stuff sure, but priority on minimalism and no appearant branding or at least subtle

Oh please I pray no Brown! No Zune Brown. No Dirt-Associated Brown. Or Titanium Brown. Or Doodoo Brown. Apple could easily screw this up for sure. The Cosmic Orange was a genius stroke. The color made me jump even faster at the purchase of my own Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro Max, which I love. The last colors I really loved were the Sierra Blue on the 13 Pro Max and the Blue Titanium on the 15 Pro Max. This Cosmic Orange is the best so far IMO. 🤙🏽😍

Wow. That's really stupid. Why am I still surprised by things like this?
Yeah, stupid [different culture] for not being identical to [your culture]. 😉

Seriously, though, why is it stupid to you? Is this really that different from how black tech devices for some reason became the neutral/prettiest choice for tech people? And before then it was some sort of shade of greige for many years (if you ignore Apple's influence with color back in the lat 90s).

People are going to upgrade their phones, and now some went with Apple because they hit a note with the local culture. It happens. 🤷

The jump in sales has nothing to do with the colour orange and everything to do with the colour of the new phone being bright and obvious. The Chinese, especially "new money" Chinese love to show-off. Release the next one in bright red if you want to see a jump in sales actually related to the specific colour.

Apple should release the 18 pro in the current orange and another new color (perhaps matching another luxury brand’s theme color), and see the sales pattern. If the above “show-off” hypothesis is correct then orange should have muted sales compared to the new color.

The colouring this year was some stereotypical, subtle-sexist branding by Apple.

The Air, which comes in a slim, feminine form has a shiny titanium frame with subtle off-white shades. The Pro makes no apologies for its buff, masculine exterior and comes in the same tones of orange and deep blue that you often find in the outdoor section of a Bass Pro store. I'm amazed there isn't one in British Racing Green quite frankly.

I do not subscribe to these stereotypes myself.

It’s stupid that people like colors? Or it’s stupid that people have cultural differences or different preferences?

If I didn’t have a 16 Pro I’d have bought the orange 17 Pro because of the features but also because of the color. The other colors are fine, but that orange is lovely.

Yep, this is quite evident. With this model, Apple has steered the Pro line towards the "made for outdoor workers who push it to the limit", hence the videos in extreme weather conditions, the rugby players, the desert, the action movies and all that stuff.
Hugely disappointing for those who have always thought of the Pro as a kind of luxury item to show off their taste/money. And therefore titanium becomes a too expensive material which is only justified by its cost, and becomes even an hindrance with its low heat dissipation. While the supposedly more scratchable aluminium, is more fit for the job, because the new Pros use their phone instead of looking at it, polishing it all the time, checking that it's always unblemished.

But this is always been true for Apple users too, whether they like it or not, at least as they are perceived outside of their echo chamber.
