I hear ya. But it would have to be VERY specific & niche. Perhaps the idea of making it super rugged for outdoor or action sports people like the Apple Watch Ultra crowd might work. Even tho that seems kinda silly for a phone. But just making it better or more “pro” than a “pro”? Kinda defeats or cheapens the whole term “pro“ if you ask me.
I agree with you in that they run the risk of devaluing the “Pro” branding

But really it’s consistent with iPhone X layout but with today’s larger sensors and room for MagSafe capability. It’s an option anyways.
But modem Pros have 3 camera sensors and need to support Spatial Video ideally. And you don’t have the LIDAR sensor. Imagine it in the center vertically with the flash and LIDAR in the middle. Now you have Spatial Video, room for fingers, and even more wobble!

Apple needs to rethink the product line to improve the fragmentation. I really think that if Jobs were resurrected today, this would be the first change he would work on.

The idea that iPhone 17 would be an Ultra above the Max sounds like an additional device in an already crowded line-up. There’s a 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 PM, and that’s just the latest model. Also available are the SE, 14, 14 Plus, and the SE.

That’s EIGHT iPhone models on the market right now.

They should probably just retire the Max name. The iPad and Watch don’t have that name. To me it makes sense to have a line-up like this:
- iPhone SE - base model, current “regular” model
- iPhone - current Pro phone
- iPhone Pro - this is the Max size
This would make the most sense but then they would eliminate the demo that wants a Pro phone without the larger size and would have to cut the price of the current, smaller Pro. The Apple of 2024 is not going to give up that cash. Their whole business model is to create desire and drive people to higher-priced devices. But I agree, Steve would have a fit with this lineup. 😄

Well this would be the reason why the current layout is what it is. MagSafe needs lots of room too.

I just wonder from a technical point of view if vertically aligned lenses would work or not.

What I liked about the iPhone of years ago was that it was simply THE iPhone. Apple put the best of what they had in it.

Compare that to today, the non-Pro models feel almost insulting. I went for the 14 Pro because I wanted Dynamic Island. All the 14 models should have had it.

Except the millions that bought the Mini.
I think the mini was made in response to the XR and 11 which, because of their bezels, were def big, almost the width of the Plus/Max, and made a lot of people think 6.1” was a huge phone

IRL I’ve only ever known one person who bought a mini though, of all of my acquaintances 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do think a new mini with a 5.8” screen with the current Pro’s smaller bezels would be a lot more viable than the 5.4” mini was. Esp if the standard phone goes to 6.3” in the future I think they will bring it back. Three sizes would be really nice, there are a lot of different sized hands out there. I just wouldn’t want it to replace the Plus.

Does that mean it’s not gonna flop around like a fish out of water when using on a flat surface?

At this point I’d take a downgraded camera if it meant to get rid of that damn bump.

Personally I think the cameras would be best right in the middle, like on standalone cameras, but I get why that would complicate the internal layout.

I also think a phone’s thinness should be measured at its thickest part, so it’s only really as thin as its camera bump. They should make them thick enough to not need a bump, and fill the additional space with battery.

iPhone Slim is going to be this dacade's iPhone 5C
I hope so - that was the best looking iPhone they ever made! I wish we didn’t have to choose between prettiest and best hardware.

I love how Apple conned the world that a useless black oval further down the screen was better than the notch.
I hated the Dynamic Island concept before I bought the 15PM... but it does look better than the notch, and the info presented in it is kinda handy. I'd like more info at the top of the screen, honestly. I can see my dinner timer counting down now as I type...

I was just holding my iPhone 7 Plus and couldn’t believe how much lighter it was than my 15PM. I wish they would ditch the heavy glass back and just go with glass where the MagSafe will be

Yet you keep buying from Apple.
Yeah because it's the glitter-covered turd versus glitter-covered diarrhea (i.e. Android). Cool argument tho.

Love your assumptions. I haven’t bought anything Apple since 2022. My newest desktop from 2023 was a Dell, latest laptop in 2022 was a Chromebook, last phone in 2022 was a ZFlip3. My work iPhone will likely be replaced with a Pixel.

Sooooo tell me again internet expert that I “keep buying Apple”.

Finally! A thinner, lighter iPhone! This sounds like the device I’ve been waiting for.

It’s about time Apple got back to designing thin, sexy phones.
And guaranteed easy bend with reduced battery life. Also comes with bigger camera bump.

I have no desire for a thinner iPhone. We already pay a large penalty for Apple's obsession with thin on its other products. This is acceptable until it compromises battery size and shedding heat. Just because you can make something thinner does not mean it is a good idea!

I’ve always hated the corner camera. i don’t use cases so that wobble has always been annoying.
Very understandable and I also find it annoying. But don't wish for them to center it, some close-to-the-surface-shots are only possible in landscape mode with the current iPhone setup. I wouldn't want to lose that.

Surprised it took this long to move the cameras. Maybe now it won't rock when set down on a table.
The rocking-when-set-down-on-a-table has nothing to do with where the camera is located. The rocking is due to the camera having a bump and not being flush with the rear. That's why all iPhone models before the iPhone 6 didn't rock when set down on a table.

Tim Cook is an MBA degree-holding corporate scumbag who allows Apple's industrial designers to be lazy because the less Apple spends on R&D, while simultaneously not passing that savings on to customers and instead actually increasing prices, means the more profits Apple makes, which is practically all Cook cares about.

The camera bump has existed now since 2014's iPhone 6, which was 10 years ago. 10 years of lazy design.
