I'm sure you're right and also that I'm just old/weird, but this is crazy to me. It's a computer, buy the computer and get the internet access. You don't buy a TV from the broadcast company, or lights from the electric company. Or even worse, essentially lease on contract.

Yeah, I know people even older than me probably literally did that, which also goes to show how weird and antiquated this idea is.
I got the 16e from them for half off a month after it released but it was a hassle because I only wanted the phone, not their service. They changed their terms retroactively forcing me to pay for another month of service before the phone would unlock. When I bought the phone the unlock policy was “60 days after activation” but on April 1 of all days it changed to “after 60 days of paid service”.

They got sued for that as it violates the Verizon spectrum purchase agreement, and lost, but I doubt they have changed their policy.

Elsewhere, rumors suggest the iPhone 17e will gain a magnetic ring that will allow it to connect to MagSafe chargers, which is not an option with the iPhone 16e.
This was such a bone-headed omission from the 16e. MagSafe is a huge quality of life feature, and seems like a bare minimum for any iPhone introduced in recent years.

I hope the iPhone 17e comes with a Dynamic Island. I’ll only buy it if it has the island. otherwise, I’ll look for a discounted 16e.

On another note, didn’t The Elec report on December 3 that the 17e would reuse the same display as the 16e? So does this mean there are two conflicting rumors, and only one can be right?

Dynamic Island: Digital Chat Station and SmartPikachu
Notch: The Elec
I have asked this to other people and never really gotten a reply. What about the Dynamic Island makes it a must have feature for you? I had a regular iPhone 13 before and now have a 17 Pro Max and the don't get what the big deal is with the Dynamic Island. Why is it so important a feature for you? This is not judgement, this is curiosity.

It’s not that I see the Dynamic Island as a must. In fact, I’m considering buying the 16e, which doesn’t have it. Still, among the rumored features, it’s the one I’m most interested in, because when you hold the phone in your hand, you immediately notice it’s there and it changes the way you interact with certain parts of the device. That doesn’t really happen with other features like the A19 chip, which, honestly, doesn’t feel any different from the A18 in everyday use. MagSafe does matter, but I always use my phone with a case, and you can get cases with built in magnets anyway. And personally, I’m not very into cameras. I don’t take many photos, and when I do, they’re simple. So while the front camera improvement is nice, it’s not enough to push me toward the 17e.

Maybe this doesn’t make much sense and it’s just a personal preference or something I’ve fixated on, but I’ve used phones with the Dynamic Island and I see it as a positive thing.

60 Hz refresh rate in a $600 phone in 2026 when even the cheapest phones today come with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Pure comedy. It looks like Apple hasn't learned from the previous phone flop and is thinking this one will be better.

Shift to dynamic island will be good. Hopefully this time around there will be more color choices. Expecting the same price to continue. MagSafe is also much needed.

So iPhone 17e is an iPhone 17 but

No-Pro Motion
128GB
Binned A19
Single Camera.

And this will be $200 off regular iPhone 17. Considering Apple changes $200 per 256GB Storage, a 256GB iPhone 7e would be $699. Only $100 cheaper than iPhone 17.

I do hope they keep iPhone 16e though, it should be $499.

For me its that yu an swap between apps quickly rather than a swipe up and across to find the app page thats running.

Still a bad deal for $600. You get so much more with a regular 17, and $600 isn't exactly a "budget" phone.

The 17e would be a good deal for someone who doesn't need fancy cameras, and is coming from a XR... which cost me more than $600 new at the time. But the 16e is in my sights. The notch is fine. I have dithered for a couple years and it's time to pull the trigger on a phone upgrade while the XR still gets security updates and can serve as a backup in a pinch.
