It's giving me the touch bar on Macbooks vibes. I personally love the touch bar and find it useful because I figured out how to make good use of it, such a shame that Apple can't make it more useful but instead they want to "cut cost" and get rid of it. The button will die quicker than the touchbar did.
If Apple hadn't ditched the touchbar, I would have ditched Apple. It was a travesty.

I would be okay with that, but the article is ridiculous. What does it take to become a source for a MacRumors article these days? The article essentially states that the source is no more reliable than a random person on the street. So, if I wrote a blog post claiming that the upcoming iPhone case would be made of platinum, would you publish that article?
It helps if you write it in Chinese. ;)

I like the physical switch on my Mini. It’s nice being able to reach into my pocket and check if the phone is on silent or not.

Never really got the appeal of the action button.

I love the button. I’ve wanted a physical camera button since I saw it on the Sony years ago. As a parent it’s super convenient to press the button as I’m taking my phone out of my pocket to have the camera ready to go. I love that button.

I’m also someone who actually does use visual intelligence for adding stuff to my calendar and capturing physical phone numbers.

Could I go back to using the action button, I guess, but I don’t want to.

I know I am in the minority here, but I appreciate and use it frequently. For me, it's quicker than using the on screen option to open my camera and snap quick shots when there's only split seconds to capture something. As for the Visual Intelligence aspect of it, I have rarely used that feature. I honestly forget it's there. As a matter of fact, I took a picture and uploaded it to Chat GPT yesterday to identify an item, having completely forgotten about VI.

I'd be fine if they dropped the function of the button but I wish they'd repurpose it as the power button and keep it in its current position, dropping the existing one. I still miss my Nokia Lumia from 2014 where the buttons were not on two sides straight across from one another and I could press them one-handed without trouble. With an iPhone I always have to work to adjust my volume without accidentally turning the phone on or off.

It's just another one of those areas like making it clear how to decline a call or consistently distinguishing "sleep" vs "off" in alarm / timer displays where Apple just has a UX blind spot.

apple really fumbled here. all they had to do was ADD the touch bar above the function keys. ADD, not substitute. there was plenty of hardware real estate to add it. that was where they ****ed up and a concept that could have been great is now a rush-to-forget-about embarrassment.

You can disable the button completely. That's what I did on my 16 PM on day 1. The button is ultra clumsy to use and does add nothing. Everything it does, I can do with on screen controls.
That camera control is one of, if not THE stupidest additions to the iPhone I my opinion.
Thanks, I didn’t know this!

I use a 15 Plus, and I will not buy any iPhone that has a button located in that position. I know myself and how I use a phone; I would forever be pushing that button.

That button, its purpose and location, strikes me as a failed attempt by an Apple designer to remain relevant to the company. But that seems to be the norm for the last few years.

I will use this 15 Plus for as long as I can; likely, next year I will also buy a OnePlus to explore my options.

Just like the 3D Touch article few years ago. Nobody mentions the most crucial and dangerous aspect in this story.

That Apple tracks every movement how you use your phone. Whether you scrolling, tapping or even tilt it.

Imagine all the sensitive content they register; private stories, photos, passwords.

It was a terrible feature from the beginning. Impossible to use in real life, way too gimmicky to navigate between the modes. It might be easier to use in landscape mode (with two hands only), but impossible in portrait. And because in portrait mode, touching it was so awkward, it keeps messing up between modes unintentionally, which led me to disable the feature altogether. Now I solely use it as a camera launch button and a shutter.
That's probably one difference in perceived utility. I rarely take photos in portrait, and I never record videos in portrait. I'm using the camera button in landscape, usually with two hands. It could stand to be a little closer to the bottom, but it's not in a terrible location for use in landscape.

Got the iPhone 16 Pro Max and thought I was ready to shoot cinematic masterpieces. Enter: the camera button. At first, it felt like Apple gave me a magic wand… that only summoned confusion. I disabled it immediately, like swatting a fly that keeps landing on your forehead.

Months later, I saw a friend using it like it was the holy grail of photography. Tried it again. Regret. This button is less “design feature” and more “design dare.” It’s like Apple said, “Let’s see how many people we can confuse with one tiny clicky booby trap.” Mission accomplished.

I like having it as an option. I don’t always use it, but it is great for getting a shot quickly and for weird angles. At my work, I sometimes use my phone to “see” behind things by sticking the camera in a small space. The side button can be used to take the pic much easier than the on-screen button. The first case I had had a cutout. I didn’t care for that. I got a Tiny Owl case with a built in button and it is MUCH better. Feels better in the hand. No weak spot there. So I very much hope they keep the button.
point being the volume up button has functioned as the shutter button for years now.

If you are looking for a convenient button on the side of the phone then you've had that option for a long time.

So now it’s called Apple=greed because investors wanna put money in an AI bubble?

lol you know better than that

They are greedy to put money in quite a few things that I've noticed, I really couldn't care less about AI...

'3D Touch' says welcome to the club.

Now that Apple have killed the mute switch, they could just integrate this into the Action button so users who don't use the camera controls can remap it to whatever they want.

3D Touch was more useful than this button.

I have a 6S I use on occasion and that feature was really cool.

I'm always left thinking ... "why did they get rid of this?"

Because they could cut cost by adding long press into the software. Maybe minor space saving, but mostly cost saving. Tim Cook and his finance bros at helm, that's all you need to know.
