Is that a pro-only feature? On 16 standard and all I manage is to adjust the frikking tone when i by accident hold down too long.
No, but based on the rumor there’s a possibility that they remove it from the base iPhone 18 but not from the Pro.

Sad if true. I swipe the Camera Control all the time. Mainly to zoom when holding the phone in one hand taking landscape photo/video (thumb on bottom edge of phone, fingers on top edge, index finger on the Camera Control)

It would be nice if Apple would fix auto brightness in iOS 26. 🤦‍♂️ It still does not work properly.

It’d be great if it was a proper knurled camera-like button, half press down to change modes/operations then scroll settings. As is its virtually impossible to operate although I use it all the time simply to open the camera.

Don't mind the camera control button on my 17 Pro Max. I don't use it much. More importantly, if it can reduce the repair cost for a damaged button, then it might be a good move.

They should just call it the “selfie button” — that’s the main reason it exists

For me it gets used just as much as my action button - ie, never.
Just never seem to get it into my muscle memory and forget its even there.

The idea was great. The execution less so.
Can you elaborate a little? I honestly considered upgrading from my 15 Pro Max for only this feature... I thought it would be a game changer to have the DSLR-esque approach to half-click metering before taking a photo...

Hard to explain but it’s very fiddly. Doesn’t quite work the way it should, putting pressure on you have to do it perfectly or it will not work or come up with a different sub menu.

It ends up being easier to just do it the old way. This is just my opinion of course.

Standard iPhone 16, no “hacks” to enable Pro features.

It seems to me that people who often complain about its presence don’t even know how the camera key works. I loved having a dedicated shutter key on phones like my Lumia 930, and I’m liking it on the iPhone 16 too. I set mine up to behave like a two-stage shutter, so it’s perfect for me. But every time any phone gets a feature I like, the “general public” whines it out of existence (just like with Face Unlock on Pixels).

I'd rather Apple improve Camera Control than remove functionality. It also needs to be positioned lower on the bezel so it's more natural to use like as a shutter button.

Must be some setting somwhere then.
This is all I manage to get with long press, short tap, soft and hard presses. A slight slide sends the Tone -40 or +40 and picture looks bad.
Iphone 16 still on 18.7 if that matters.

Update. Found my issue under Accessability settings.
Thank you for making me look there.
I have been moving along with my settings for many phone swaps and have reduced much of the visual stuff under other parts in accessibility.

Dedicated Camera button is a 1000% a killer feature for instant camera access! BUT the swipe & haptic controls are next level useless. It would be better as just a small raised (action button sized) button that's easier to activate (especially with any kind of case thickness). Honestly, the iPhone could simply be two action buttons with the volume buttons eliminated (as software controls are better for that 90% of the time)!

Another thing many people complain about is the incredible similarity between the red record and pause buttons. The only difference is that one is a circle and the other is a square with very rounded corners, making it impossible to distinguish from a distance, especially for people with presbyopia. Many people, even if they can see it clearly, accidentally press the button, only noticing it changing shape slightly, and don't realize they've stopped recording. A very simple solution would be to make the stop button a hollow black space; that would be instantly distinguishable. I don't understand why they haven't changed it; it's been like this since 2009.
