Anyone else OK with a top bezel? I was looking at an image and an important message at the top of the image was obstructed by the notch and not readable. WTF Apple, add a bezel until you have the tech to put it all behind the screen.
Or at the very least not place things meant for the user to see, under the notch/DI. There's actually not much of that, but with proper design, there wouldn't be ANY of that.

I actually really like the Dynamic Island.
Same! I love being able to see what’s playing on Spotify, the status of my grab car, a football score, my AirPods Pro battery level, all at a glance. I’m afraid I’m gonna want the new iPhone just cause it’s smaller and will be able to show more info 😭.

BTW I upgraded from the 13 Pro to the Air so it's my first time having the dynamic island

And once all the front-facing camera/Face ID hardware goes under the display, the DI will still be there, just popping up and out when needed.

While a smaller dynamic island is good, don't think it makes much of a difference in user experience. Looking forward to the 20th anniversary model where it might be an all screen display.

They should have done this from the start. Like every decent Android phone did. It works well for Android though with its menu bar of notification icons along the very top.
Having a cutout just for the front-facing/selfie camera, and not the Face ID hardware, wouldn't have allowed Apple to do Face ID properly. The technology for putting the Face ID components under the display, while still getting accuracy for facial recognition better than the poor version in most Android phones, didn't exist when Apple first implemented Face ID, and they're still working on it. That said, I understand that some people don't like Face ID, but many people do.

No matter how small Dynamic Notchland is, it will still be a notch. The best way to get rid of all notches is to bring back bezels.
No, the best way to get rid of all notches is to put everything under screen…. The technology for this already exists, Apple is just dragging their feet on it, either to drip out improvements and sell more phones, or because it’s not absolutely perfect and up to their standards yet

Tim knows he has no more cards to play once we get to just a slab of glass.

So until then, the milking continues.

The technology doesn’t exist.

There is no way to have a 3D Face ID under the display. And while front facing camera is possible under the display, the quality suffers.

You really do not get how difficult it is to stick things under a display and have IR light penetrate through multiple layers.

Does Apple drag their feet and use primitive tech in their “high end” phones? Yes (usb 2 and 3 is proof of this), and gate-keep for greed? Yes. Is that the case here? No. They’ve been buying research companies to try to solve this issue and hack away at this problem of penetrating multiple layers with IR light. Because of this roadblock, they’re putting what they can under the display to make the DI to sell more phones. They could get into legal trouble if they market the Face ID as under the display, since it’s not entirely true. So they’ll just say it’s a “smaller DI.”

I wouldn't say there's no way. As you also say, Apple and others are working on it, and it looks like at least the IR flood illuminator might go under the display for the iPhone 18 series (or maybe just the Pro models). But doing just that alone wouldn't account for the reduction in Dynamic Island size that the rumors say the 18 might have.

I like the Dynamic Island so I hope Apple keeps it.
It's fully possible to put everything contained in the notch portion of Dynamic Island into a bezel above the display while still having 100% of the current graphical functionality of Dynamic Island. That way, there would be no literal hole in the screen. In fact, if the hole were removed (due to putting things in a bezel), then the grapcial functionality would be even better than it is now because there would not be an empty hole with no graphical capability in the middle of it.

The Dynamic Island is really a software thing (though originally intended to make use of, or even compensate for, the physical cutout for the front-facing cameras), so it should still appear, when needed, after the physical cutout in the display is gone, after the front-facing camera parts are moved under the display.

Underdisplay cameras have worse image quality so there's going to be some kind of a cutout for several years more still..

I've use the Pixel 4 and I prefer the cutout to a top-heavy upper bezel. Id be fine with a holepunch screen because the Dynamic Island still works with it.

I wasn’t talking about the future. But currently since the guy I was talking about was talking in the present tense.
