Yes this is pedantic and this is how everyone describes it so it's understood right away.
Once you realize that these "leakers" are simply narcissists who get a dopamine hit from seeing their BS published, your eyes open to how much you really should point and laugh at them instead.

The feel of the iPhone 17 Pro without a cover did nothing for me. I love orange but it all felt cheap to me.

The huge majority of these leaks must be manufactured. It gets people talking waaaay beforehand. There were topics on Neo at least 6 months before it was launched.
It’s all part of business.
Digital Chat Station in his April 9 post said "it becomes more likely that iPhone 18 Pro models will have a smaller Dynamic Island" and "there is AB tests going on in supply chains".

If it's how everyone describes it, then what does a "smaller Dynamic Island" mean? The expanding UI around the pill (the UI + cutout are the Dynamic Island) will be smaller than what we currently have or will just the cutout area be smaller?
I’m all for a smaller Dynamic Island but I hope these specific CAD files are not real. It looks like the Dynamic Island has been moved down relative to the display similar to how they did it for the iPhone Air. I definitely do not want that. I’d rather have the Dynamic Island stay the same if the alternative is it moving lower down on the screen reducing the effective screen size for content.
I think they made the cutout taller (yet smaller overall) to prepare us for a rounded one that will house the selfie cam only

That's true... but where do they go *now*?
This looks like what the above user said, just moving the camera around.
Until they can figure out how to get the "magic window" effect à la Google Beam (formerly Google Starline), they've pretty much done all they can do.
I do wish they'd look into the new sodium batteries, but I am not sure if they are small enough.

How is "Dynamic Island" more 'confusing' than your "pill-shaped cutout+software"? You're talking about precision but you replace a perfectly decent marketing name (Dynamic Island) with an unnecessary explanation. In all areas of life people tend to pick a name for various common phenomena instead of constantly explaning "you know that fleeting cognitive illusion where a new situation suddenly feels intensely familiar, even though you know you haven't experienced it before". That's the power of language and abstractions. So, yes, Dynamic Island, and by now everyone knows what it is. And, yes, it's getting smaller because cutout is getting smaller and therefore all content around it will get slightly smaller too (2+x>1+x).
Apple could compensate for the smaller cutout area by keeping the software UI area the same when Dynamic Island is in multitasking or expanded states.
For example, currently the Dynamic Island has a maximum height X width of about 23.5 X 60.6 mm (iPhone/Pro) or 23.5 X 66.6 mm (iPhone Pro Max). Apple could reduce the cutout area size (when this rumor was about) but keep the full expanded Dynamic Island size the same. While it's possible what you wrote is the case, it's also possible Apple will keep the overall UI size of Dynamic Island the same.
Also, the physical cutout currently consists of two separate physical holes: a circular punch-hole for the front-facing camera and a separate pill-shaped cutout for the TrueDepth/Face ID sensors. Apple uses software to turn off the OLED pixels between them, bridging the gap with deep black to create a single cohesive "island." That's one reason why Dynamic Island is the cutout + the software/UI. The dark pill at the top you see is cutouts + software turning the pixels between the cutouts black when Dynamic Island is in its standard inert state.

I thought you disliked the name Dynamic Island. They had to call it something, "pill-shaped cutout + software/UI" isn't a very good name TBH.
