I’d be ok with that. I had a 6s and while technically I guess you could say it had a bump, it was limited to the frame around the lens itself, and protruded maybe 1mm at most, IIRC. Not bothered by that.

I absolutely hated the 6 and 6s, they were definitely my two least favourite iPhones

I wouldn’t regard a variable aperture lens a DSLR feature. It’s a basic feature of a decent camera.

Simple film cameras have had this feature for a century, it is common on non DSLR digital cameras as well

Even if there is no variable aperture, a larger aperture will be very welcome as it should definitely help with low light shots. A bigger sensor is also required. Good to see yearly improvements to the cameras of iPhone.

I was gonna wait for the 18 Pro Max for this but decided I’ll get the 17 Pro Max, give my 15 Pro Max to my gf (she’s still using my old 13 Pro) and then in 2 years I’ll get the 19 Pro Max which will have the new main camera along with some other new features. I’m here for a good time, not a long time. May as well upgrade every 2 years.

Anybody else find it sorta weird seeing it called the iPhone 18 when they dropped 'iOS 26'?

I've concluded that all versions are made-up numbers that no sane person can monitor these days.

Every long time Windows user already knows the pain.😚

I get your point, but I’m not sure it’s an “industry” thing. Variable aperture isn’t limited to mirrorless and DSLR so why refer to a camera type at all? These articles could just say the iPhone is getting “variable aperture” and leave it that.
The article compares to DSLR, hence my comment.

Despite other types of cameras being around, media, articles, and customers constantly compare to DSLR cameras. Other styles are typically (not always) ignored.

instead of removing the bump by making the lens smaller, id much rather they remove the bump by making the body of the phone thicker to make it in line with the bump so the whole phone is whatever the size needs to be. will allow for a bigger battery that way, as wwell as actually being able to sit flat again on a surface.
No thank you. The 17 pro max is a tank already. If it was thicker then masons would literally start using it to build brick houses.

The more I think about it the more I realize none of this is going to happen.

You’d have to give up a lot for no camera bump. Last one without it was the iPhone 5S. It’s not just the features but the physical camera sensor is bigger for better overall photos.
My 16e doesn’t have a camera bump. Just a small metal ring around the lens. Using the slim Apple Silicone case the back is completely flat, no protrusion of the ring.

I’m enjoying this model for occasional use when I want to leave my main iPhone 16 Pro Max behind.

Because a large display is useful for my workflow it would be nice if Apple offered a Pro / Pro Max with a flush single camera.

Yeah it still does have a camera bump though just to get the one they chose for the 16e into that size. It’s still missing sensor shift image stabilization and is a previous generation sensor. It’s a great camera no doubt, it’s just not the latest camera tech.

You must be thinking of another model, as the 16e has a perfectly flat back and no camera bump.

Having a full complement of cameras on my primary iPhone 16 Pro Max, I really don’t care that the single 16e camera isn’t the latest tech.

I selected the 16e for it’s compact size as an ideal occasional use phone when I want to leave my primary phone behind.

You must not know what phone you have because the 16e definitely has a camera bump

Your entire point about having a second phone with lesser tech or whatever was irrelevant to my original point.
