My honest take is that despite Titanium being the more premium metal I felt it cause the iPhone to over heat too often and slow down the iPhone’s performance especially with my job requiring the use of gps. The 17 pro max’s aluminum build fixed those issues for me.

The glass back should at least be upgraded to Ceramic Shield 2.

And the aluminum needs to be strengthened. But it’s the better material for performance and battery life compared to titanium. They just need to make it more scratch resistant. Maybe there’s a coating they can use?

They've shown dents after one drop.
One drop from what height onto what medium? I could drop an iPhone 17 onto a mattress from 20 feet and it wouldn't dent unless it bounced off and hit something hard. I could also take a hammer and dent the phone and smash the screen.

If people are going to worry about a dented phone, those people should put their phone in a strong case or not drop their phone.

Apple continues the downgrade in materials from titanium to less durable aluminum. They must think we’re stupid. Hopefully Cook’s penny pinching will be reversed by the new guy at some point.

The orange > pink thing is/was very weird (did that ever get explained?) but other than that I’m not sure what the issue is here…metal (both aluminum and titanium) scratches, and the anodization can only go so deep into the metal; it’s not like this is paint that “chips.”

That being said, I hate the aluminum on the Pro and don’t love that the Air’s titanium is polished…hopefully they’ll switch the Air to a textured finish like my current 16 Pro 🙏🏻

Pretty clear that Apple switched back to aluminum for thermal reasons, not cost.

If Apple makes the iPhone 17 Pro out of aluminum, some people will complain about durability and not using the more expensive material.
If Apple makes the iPhone 17 Pro out of titanium, more people will complain about the weight and overheating of the phone.
Apple chose the path of less complaints.

use a case like normal people. if your aluminum gets dinged its your fault.
The 15 Pro and 16 Pro didn’t need cases. The switch to aluminium was a downgrade nobody asked for. If your phone needs a case it’s not durable enough. Considering how much Apple like to harp on about every minor improvement they make to their Ceramic Shield they obviously know this, but decided to make the 17 Pro less durable anyway.

Mine has gotten a few light marks and a scratch or two, but it's stayed way cooler in use and charging than my previous iPhone 14 Pro. It's been one of my favourite iPhones I've owned; I'd put the 17 Pro above any of the 12-16 models, the caveat being it needs a tough case, which is fine for me.

Maybe Apple could come up with a new series of Aluminium alloy? A bit like when they changed from 6000 series to 7000 series with the 6S.

The problem is: 95% do not care if their phones get banged up.
Heck, even here is this forum there are folks who drop theirs and claim it doesn't have a single scratch. Which is kind of laughable - of course it'll scratch if you drop it. Even the steel phones scratched. But the point is, 95% don't look as closely to even notice.

So why would Apple leave big $$ on the table offering premium durability if it's relevant for a small group only...

Don’t drop the phone or put it in a pocket with keys or coins, then you won’t have an issue. Mines still in mint condition.

Titanium is stronger and looks more premium, but to be fair to Apple at least they made the 17 Pro's with a Unibody Aluminium chassis.

So boring, iPhones always look the same. Just Zero innovation! Tim Apple instead of attending Melania screenings please pay more attention to your iPhone design department.
