While most sources in the Apple rumor scene agree that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature under-screen Face ID, there continues to be conflicting rumors about how that change might impact the Dynamic Island.

In a post on social media platform X today, the account "ShrimpApplePro" claimed that the Dynamic Island will be "shorter" on the iPhone 18 Pro models, as a result of some Face ID components moving under the screen. Only the front camera and Face ID's infrared camera will remain visible on the devices, they said.

"ShrimpApplePro" has accurately leaked some details about devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Watch Series 9 in the past, but they are not always correct. Early rumors should always be treated with some skepticism.

Last month, The Information said that the front camera would be moved to the top-left corner of the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro models. The report explicitly said this change would help to eliminate the pill-shaped cutout in the screen, but "ShrimpApplePro" evidently believes that the Dynamic Island will live on in a smaller way.

YouTube channel Front Page Tech mocked up an iPhone 18 Pro with both the front camera and a smaller Dynamic Island in the top-left corner of the screen, but the video might simply be combining the two rumors mentioned above.

While the exact implementation remains to be seen, the good news is that it really does sound like under-screen Face ID is finally happening this year.

South Korean publication ETNews today reported (via "Jukan") that the iPhone 18 Pro models will use under-screen infrared technology from Samsung, which would pave the way for under-screen Face ID. The report also said the devices will use so-called LTPO+ display technology, which would likely be more power efficient than the current LTPO technology in the iPhone 17 series. This upgrade should contribute to longer battery life.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro models in September, and hopefully the Face ID and Dynamic Island rumors are more clear by then.

Update: "ShrimpApplePro" has since deleted their post.

It’s a given that DI will be shorter but will it still be in the middle or on one side. Some of these rumours and predictions are playing it too safe.

I know absolutely nothing about the latest leaker but I really hope they are right. A shorter Dynamic Island in the same spot as the current one is exactly what I want.

Let's hope it's that. With Prosser, you never know. Maybe he paid someone for trade secrets under the guise of journalism. Maybe he is dressing in all black at night and breaking into houses around Cupertino looking for unattended devices. Maybe he has installed spyware on some executive's device. Maybe he tapped Gurman's phone.

It doesn't make much difference unless it disappears completely. I wonder how they will package it to sell this to the public.
This seems very similar to the 12 Pro => 13 Pro transition when they made the notch a little bit narrower. I don't remember them marketing that too much to be honest. Probably just something like, this iPhone has the highest screen to body ratio of any iPhone ever!

Yes it would be a small change, but I'd take it.

I'm convinced they're testing or have tested various solutions, and one of them was placing the camera in the corner. However, I'm not convinced this is the final design. If it is, it means Apple is no longer the brand for good design. I started having doubts when they introduced the idiotic wallpaper management, but they confirmed it with the release of System 26. I became almost certain when I saw ikocy Creator Studio, and now I'll be 100% sure.

The camera and FaceID module are probably moving to be side to also made room for a second camera at the rear for iPhone Air. Plus with periscope rear cameras the extra room is needed. Camera to the left what is behind that is the LED flash at the rear which doesn’t take up much internal space.

there will be no

Under-Screen Face ID in iphone 18 line-up

Not sure why Apple waiting so long to do this but it had the long notch on the lineup since iPhone X then reduced its size on iPhone 13. It became DI on iPhone 14, only to be reduced in size and moved on iPhone 18.

Why not skip the whole center DI and have it all moved to the side since iPhone 14?

My guess - the iPhone Fold will have a corner camera. And maybe iPhone Air. Both because the internals need to be moved around to support both FaceID and dual back cameras in the horizontal layout that the iPhone Air currently has.

If both this rumor of under-screen FaceID on the 18 Pro and the rumor of an iPhone XX next year with both under-screen FaceID and under-screen camera, I don't get why Apple doesn't wait for the iPhone XX to put everything under the screen, so the gap between current iPhones and the "brand new shiny" iPhone (like the iPhone X did back then) would be bigger.

To be honest, I prefer fingerprint unlock on my iPhone - faceID is useful maybe 70% of the time in my usage. It's too bad they didn't do both and allowed you to choose.
I always wanted TouchID to come back, I had a 13 Pro Max and just as you said, it would be useful 70% of the time for me as well and always ended up entering my PIN after being frustrated when it didn't recognize me. Last year I upgraded to the 15 Pro Max and now I have no problems with FaceID. It works for me I would say 95% of the time. May I ask, are you on an older model?

Did you try to re-register your face on the 13? It might just have been a bad registration.

The "upgrade" difference between my 15 pro and 17 pro was so negligible that I really don't think I need to buy another phone for at least 5-6 years now. I actually still miss the old phone because it was so much lighter
