enough with this gimmick "feature" of a island. innovate a full screen already.

A smaller Dynamic Island will make absolutely ZERO difference in the end user experience.
It will. Ideally there shouldn’t be any ‘Dynamic Island’, so a smaller one is a step in the right direction. It will allow for more information to be shown in the top bar and less intrusive video watching experience.

The tiny startup that could, Apple, was working with the pedal to the metal to eliminate the screen holes and provide an all-glass screen, the truest expression of iPhone. However, at the very last minute, Apple suddenly discovered the technology to do this just wasn't quite ready to be a game-changer that delights customers. So, Apple had to pull the feature, thus ensuring a clear upgrade path for years of profits to come!

This is what it will look like. I like the Dynamic Island so I’m glad its not going away.

Counterpoint Research VP Ross Young today cast doubt on the 20th-anniversary iPhone featuring a truly all-screen design, but he still expects Apple to make some progress towards that ambitious goal over the next few iPhone generations.

In a post on X today, Young reiterated that at least some new iPhones launching in 2026 will be equipped with under-screen Face ID. While he did not mention any specific models, he is very likely referring to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Despite the move to under-screen Face ID, Young said that the 2026 iPhone models will still have some visible Face ID elements, and for this reason he believes that the devices will still have a "notch" (aka the Dynamic Island), but he said that it will be "smaller" compared to the one on the iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 16 models.

Young's information seems to conflict with a report last month from The Information's Wayne Ma that said the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would have "only a small hole cutout in the top-left corner to accommodate the front-facing camera." This wording suggested that the devices might not have a Dynamic Island at all, but Young has implied that there will still be a smaller Dynamic Island, which would still be an improvement.

In his Power On newsletter over the weekend, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also said that Apple would shrink the size of the Dynamic Island on at least some iPhone models launching next year, so there are now multiple sources who believe that iPhone 18 models will still have a smaller Dynamic Island rather than only a front camera hole.

Young said he is unsure if the front camera hole will nonetheless be moved to the top-left corner of the iPhone 18 screen, or if it will remain more centered.

Young does expect all Face ID elements to eventually be moved under the screen, but he now believes that change will not happen until 2028.

Enough with the stupid, practically useless, gimmicky annual updates.

Fix Siri and deliver the promised AI capabilities you promised, including the ones you faked to market the iPhone 16.

If this rumor is going to be true, then I think that in 2026, it will be a smaller dynamic island. 2027 will have a small hole cut out on the screen with FaceID going under the screen and that design should continue till 2031. Then in 2032, Apple could launch a true all screen iPhone to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

So far no one has done an underscreen camera that doesn’t have worse image quality than a holepunch camera, or one that can be hidden 100% while not use.

I was waiting for Ross to cast doubt again. I predict that the iphone 19 at best will be Apples first punch hole design & that the claimed full screen iphone may be years away.

How much information do we realistically need in the top bar that we don't already have though? And it'll still be an eye sore when watching full screen video. It's either Dynamic Island or nothing imo, because the size of it is meaningless.

It's no different than when the notch shrunk. It made no difference whatsoever to the experience as a whole.

If the goal is "no dynamic island" and even "no notch", it means my iPhone SE 2 is already perfect.

Can they just be straight up about it? Look, our goal is to have no notch/island at all. But we’re not there yet. Here’s what you get this year.

Instead of just searching for a reason for it to exist and then acting like it’s the ideal.
Media coverage:
"Apple admits failure to eliminate screen hole"
"First Apple Intelligence, now Face ID: iPhone maker falls further behind"
"Why can't Apple innovate anymore?"
"Forget iPhones: here are ten phones that are all screen" [all will have non-screen bezels or lack 3D face mapping]

^^^ 100%

For years I was an annual upgrader. Last year I couldn't even force myself to be interested in the new phone or watch. Their lack of creativity and attempts to keep the consumer love alive has led me down a path of total lethargy. Tim's stockholder focus has ruined what was an amazing company that shaped technological excitement for years.
Appoint a beancounter type, and that's what you get. A risk-averse supply chain manager whose otherwise dead eyes only light up seeing the stock price every morning, or when meeting *gosh* celebrities.

I've said it before, but I firmly believe a terminally ill Jobs chose Cook as an interim CEO in all but name (so as not to spook the markets), a boring but reliable placeholder to keep the ship steady for few years, say 2 or 3 max, until a more suitable candidate was identified, either internal or external. He even said it plainly "Tim's really not a product guy". Talk about damning with faint praise.

I don't think anyone anticipated the guy would still be dug in there nearly 15 years' later, protected by the stock price, but sadly it's been reflected both in the company culture and evident lack of innovation this past decade, which is increasingly denting Apple's once insurmountable reputation in the industry.

I'm still waiting and hoping for an iPhone with no dynamic island or hole punch. I want all screen. Maybe by the time iPhone 20 is announced?

I did say years away, 2030 is many years away i guess.

However for myself it is more of a reason to buy into this years phone, and wait until they ditch face id in 2028 my bad i said iPhone 19.

I plan to retire for seven years in 2030 when they go full screen if Ross rumours hold, i did say ‘if’.

One of the issues surround the ‘island’, is Face ID and the front facing camera.

It seems the Face ID aspect has been solved, but leaving the camera at the front.

Always seems ordered why they cannot remove the front facing camera, and provide on the rear, a small area where someone taking a selfie, could see themselves.

How would FaceTime or video calls work with the front-facing camera removed..?
