There it is everybody, the FIRM date for 2.0.
It is definitely not becoming available to the public this Friday.

If this has been posted before, I apologize.

Wow can't believe I didn't read that lol. Yeah good find, was hoping it would be released before I went on vacation. Atleast when I get back I'll have plenty to look forward to.

It does mean it won't be this Friday, but it doesn't mean a "firm" date. It says "or later".

I think that would be a big mistake, but I would guess they're just covering their bases.

no, it means iTunes 7.7 or later. 2.0 will be available july 11th.

edit: beatcha, r-rly :)

iTunes® 7.7 or later

Meaning that are covering themselves in case the build number changes,
(i.e. it is actually iTunes 8.0 that is released July 11th).

edit: damn-it sr5878 lol ...

I highly doubt they would release it earlier than the 11th. My guess is they are going for big iPhone impact on the 11th with the release of the 3G iPhone and 2.0. They want to make hype for the day and make it exciting.

Sweet find, submit this to arn or somebody for the front page, I think that this qualifies as front page news.

Would have been cool to get it earlier but I suppose I'll be even happier to have the new phone AND the new software all at the same time!

I would also consider it major news, can't believe no one had ever discovered this until now lol. What geniuses we have on Macrumors.

If this EARLY press release stated July 11, WHY haven't they updated their latest ONLINE page to read July 11, instead of 'COMING SOON'

Look for yourselves:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

I find that interesting.
Because there is a lot more discussion if the date is only speculative, and more discussion means more base for their product, that is why the date was buried in a Press Release, and not on their front page.

it states for iphone users, i bet it will be released early for ipod touch users since they must pay to upgrade.

I would think not, it will probably be the same day. 1.1.3 was released at the same time for the iPhone and the iPod touch and the touch users had to pay. The cost of having them pay is to protect Apple legally. There is not justified reason for there to be different release dates for the touch's 2.0 and the phone's.

I'm hoping they'll release the firmware a little earlier for the touch and edgephone to reduce server overload on the first day or two.

I don't think that there will be much of a server overload, there wasn't one from what I remember when 1.1.3 was released, and I don't see there being one when 2.0 comes around. Apple has been prepared and will be prepared for this.

great - now it just needs hacking to work on my old PAYG iPhone :)

or, will PAYG work now, as the new iPhone is running 2.0 and can be on PAYG in the UK, so maybe no hacking?

Why, because all the new iPhone 3G customers who already have iPhone OS 2.0 will be rushing out to get...what exactly? ;-)

(Also, Apple has never had a problem with software downloads, between services like Akamai and Edgesuite. What they've had a problem with is *interactive* web sites in the first few hours after a new service/product launch.)

Ah well. The firmware and the App Store would have been a nice treat for the end of the week. I had a feeling it wouldn't be until July 11th though. It makes a bigger splash if it's all at once.

Come on App Store......that's what I'm most looking forward to.
